Game is Slower than My Grandfather Taking out the Garbage…and he is dead.

Man it was brutal. Maybe ‘m just getting old and my attention spans getting shorter. Now, GET OFF MY LAWN!

Unless it’s live sports, I don’t watch anything with commercials if I can’t Ffwd.

I'm pretty sure there were only two or three video reviews, and at least two of them were done pretty quickly. It's not the video reviews that slow the game down, it's the annoying frequency and excessive length of the commercial breaks.

The commercial breaks were excessive. The new thing this year was a countdown clock on the field which told you exactly how long the commercial break was. There would be 2 minutes of play and then the commercial guy would trot out on the field for 3 minutes on the clock . It felt like the Princess Bride. We just sucked 3 of minutes of your life away. How do you feel?

Serious question: Are there more commercial breaks this year? Is that part of the latest TV deal or something?

Because that was just brutal last night. In the 1st half especially, I swear we spent more time at break than actual game.

That seems to be the case.

Seemed like the breaks have been extended by an additional 30 second or 1 minute spot each break. Not the number of breaks, the length.

10-15 years ago I realized that I could never stand to sit and watch an entire game in any sport. It's just too aggravating. For me, the tipping point was when they'd come back from a commercial break, show a kick or a punt, and then go on another break. That seems normal now, but when they first started with that I decided I couldn't live with it.

Ironically, I did want to watch some of your game yesterday, and activated YouTube TV since it's football season, and I do like to take a peek once in a while. I'm thinking of starting a YouTube thread to ask you all if it's really true that I can't watch except if I'm sitting in the house in which I established the account (ie, I was unable to watch your game here in Atlantic City). It seems too goofy for that to be true. Sorry, that's another thread.

By the way, great job by Rutgers football last night...

Thank God baseball has the pitch clock now
FB will need to adjust, or they'll start to decline attendance wise
I love FB, and can readily admit the game is way too long and doesn't run smooth w/all of the timeouts

I hope you're right, Jay. But it seems like baseball's solution didn't cause anybody to lose money to make the product better.

In football, people are making zillions of dollars with each jarring interruption. The fact that it makes the game less watchable, both on TV and in the stadium, might not be enough for them to take on this problem...

LOL, Spanky. I'm that old man about this. But I don't complain; I just listen to the game on the radio or watch Gametracker most of the time. I'm not going to park myself on the couch for four hours to watch that...

If I'm not at the game and could watch it live, many times I will record it and start watching at half time so I can ffwd thru the commercials and then eventually catch up to the live broadcast.

That's not new for this year, The Guy In The Red Jacket that alerts media timeouts has had an on-field timer for at least a year or two.

I hear ya! (BTW, I love when I can post that graphic!) I'm usually on the computer as I'm watching the game, so I can mute the sound for the commercials and keep busy during dead time and commercial breaks.

I figured the Two Minute Timeout addition was going to be enough, but no. So many extended media timeouts yesterday. I looked over to my wife at some point during the game and said "OMG we're not even out of the 3rd quarter yet and we've been here forever". 4th quarter seemed to go much quicker.

Well, the average game length is 3:22 (with many close games going 3.5-3.75 hours) and this game was 3:11, so not sure why everyone is complaining about this game. The ads pay the bills, although having said that I'd also prefer more action, which is why I'd rather see a 35-second play clock vs. 40 seconds, especially now that the coaches can communicate to the players until 15 seconds are left on the play clock. Wouldn't shorten the game, but we'd at least get more plays/action.

Since DVR I don't think I'd be able to go back to watching a game in real time. It's brutal...

a football game over an hour late and still catch
up to the live broadcast, just by taking out commercials.

Don't they show how much of the media time out is left on the north end of the ribbon video screen on the east side stands?

Maybe. I can't really see that from my seats. But I have a direct view of Media Timeout Guy and his 3 minute clock. I think the clock was 2:30 this year, but there seemed to be more of the timeouts.

unfortunately, it's not the actual gameplay that is slow. it's the commercial time. the media companies need to pay for our crazy contract

So we enjoy the paycheck from the B1G but don’t like the commercials. Interesting thought process.
Well yeah… it’s a case of fans wanting their cake and wanting to eat it too.

But it’s lots more tolerable for fans watching at home (which is where all that B1G pay is funded) than for fans sitting in a hot or cold stadium. Especially with all the way too loud piped in music making it hard to converse with each other during the commercial breaks.

At home, we can mute the commercials and post in the game thread, or pet our sheep, or help “clean up” the blow that got “spilled” on the mirrored countertops, or “flirt” with the hookers (which, while obviously pointless and requiring a talent for engaging the suspension of reality enough to actually believe they’re flirting back, is still more fun than watching commercials).

I hear you on that.
Perhaps it's the clock on the field with the countdown that is giving people a false sense of the number and length of the timeouts. Seemed like a lot of timeouts to me, but it did not bother me.

I grew up playing and watching football and making fun of soccer. Now I like both, but I'm a huge fan of 2 uninterrupted halves of play. Broadcast football is indeed becoming unwatchable. It's like every game is the frigging superbowl (which has been unwatchable as an actual game for many years).

I had a guest that is a big NFL fan and goes to a lot of games but had never been to a college football game before. They mentioned more than a few times that breaks and delays seemed far worse than a typical NFL game.
You don't feel it as much watching from home because you can walk away from the TV and do something.

NFL manages to keep games to 3 hours, shocking to me that college is not implementing some changes especially with declining attendance.

The guy in red outfit has been there for years.. teh clock is new. iirc, he used to wave a hat or towel or something in the air when TV would allow the ball to be put into play. The clock is better for everyone.. I think.
