GAME THREAD: RU MBB v NORTHWESTERN, 9p RAC, ESPNU, story :

He's turned four programs around with his coaching style, so I give him a lot of latitude. He's instituting a culture change, much the way Ash is in football. We didn't have the ponies in football and we don't in basketball. Eddie didn't coach while here, Flood didn't coach while here. Making matters worse for basketball is that our facilities need major upgrading. The pieces are coming together, but we are competing against teams that have had money and at least a semi-interested administration for decades. We need time because we are newcomers to big time athletics.
yeah hey, I like the guy a lot. I just would like to see him get pissed at this mess once in a while. I'm sure he is at times....everything you said is true..but none of that mattered in the first 17minutes last night.

no our offense was terrible in the first half, Northwestern laid an egg in the first half, 2nd half they decided to play somewhat. I knew in the first half that RU wouldnt win..no talent to put the ball in the hoop. Only way they did it was through circus shots. Jordan brought in Sanders and thats great., Otherwise Johnson/Williams would see 5-10 minutes a game elsewhere and the others would ride pine. The heralded Doorson and Diallo provide nothing but minutes. Laurent has disappeared. Many overrated the talent that EJ left and recruited, it will take time for Pike to fix this

serious question BAC. Do you think the 2 frosh Pike brought in are of superior talent level?

Thiam was originally at Jordan recruit I believe, showed promise early and was hyped by some on this board but clearly has regressed. Definitley has an upside but unfortunately he is almost in a spot where he has to produce because we dont have anyone else. That will end up hurting his growth as it has other RU players forced to play too early. Eugene seems to have some talent but will take some time to get going. They are players who will contribute in the future but just not yet and maybe not until their juniors...but Pike is going to need to bring in players who will make impact as freshmen..no some would say wait how can you say that, well ,look at Iowa, they have 4 frosh starting now and they just beat Purdue.

It's coaching. We played 2 completely different halfs.

Not really. We had some bad shots early in the first half that went in, and in the second were missing open layups. Some of our offense in the first half was fool's gold because we're not consistent enough to keep that up for 40 min (or even the full 20 min of the first half).

We were up 24-17 with 5:46 left in the first half... and proceeded to score 0 points over the next 3 minutes. Then we got to 28 with 2:04 left, and didn't score another point for the remaining 2 min of the half. We scored 24 points in the first 14:14... then just 4 over the next 5:46.

Can't win if we can't score... which is become a mantra for this season, unfortunately.

We also shot 10/14 (71.4%) from the FT line in the first half and just 4/9 (44.4%) in the second... as NW switched more to a zone to reduce fouls and we hit them at a lower rate. The turnover differential also disappeared as the game progressed... as we committed 1 in the first 15:25 (which was Skelly's Oscar-winner on Gettys), then 8 the rest of the way.

On the flip side, Northwestern shot poorly in the first half and committed a lot of early fouls before settling down. The turnover differential also disappeared as the game progressed.

It was almost like a smaller program playing a power team... come out gangbusters for the first 15 minutes or so, and then can't maintain that level of play for a full game.

I like Pikiell and his staff and am confident they will take us in the right direction. I'm not a basketball expert, but I assume they realize we need to get shooters into the program.
Of course they realize this

I like 95% of it. why does everything have to be black or white, left or right these days? ..there IS room in the middle.
Agree to disagree about the yelling thing. What I'd really be interested in seeing is whether or not we are holding conference opponts under their average in ppg. I know that has nothing to do what we're talking about. Just curious

Our seven losses:

Held under their average:
Northwestern: allowed 69, they average 74.8
Iowa: allowed 68, they average 83.0
PA State: allowed 60, they average 73.9
Wisconsin: allowed 72, they average 76.8
Seton Hall: allowed 72, they average 77.6

Allowed their average:
Miami: allowed 73, they average 72.8

Allowed over their average:
Michigan State: allowed 93, they average 72.3

do you have the stats comparing what Rutgers scores compares to their opponents avg giving up

Only loss where we beat the opponent's average points allowed was Miami, and just barely.

Scored more than their average:
Miami: We scored 61, they allow 60.2

Scored within 5 points of their average:
Michigan State: We scored 65, they allow 66.7
Northwestern: We scored 60, they allow 64.4

Scored fewer than 5 points below their average:
Wisconsin: We scored 52, they allow 60.2
SHU: We scored 61, they allow 69.7
Iowa: We scored 62, they allow 77.4
PA State: We scored 47, they allow 69.9

we can do that LOL. look, I don't care how he gets it done...I just want these guys to play relatively under control for a whole game. Especially when we build a lead.
We shoot so poorly we HAVE to value the ball and every possession. Turnovers and wild play that takes a chance to score down to even lower % to make just kills us.

Can't score if you go 1-on-1 and settle for jumpers. It also leads to no rebounding, poor transition D, and stupid fouls. Two completely different halfs.

yeah that's what I thought as well...if Pike brings in the kind of players we need I don't frankly see these guys do much down the road. Yeah maybe Eugene as he is at least coming on a trend (and stops forcing the ball to the post) .

Gosh we need two guys BAD..an inside and outside stud and build from there.

Every school has the same problem. Every team is two guys away from being really good. let's see if he can bring in the two guys that we haven't been able to get for the last 10 years.

The changeover happened before the half, though - and I wouldn't say that the second half was all going 1-on-1, either, since they took less than 40% of the shots over the stretch when we went from up 7 to down 13. There were shots there in the flow of the offense that weren't taken or were missed, and we'd repeatedly end up with Sanders/Johnson up top with 8 seconds on the shot clock.

The "dead zone" in this game ran from 5:46 left in the first to 4:07 left in the second.

From 5:46 in the 1st half until halftime:
Johnson 0-2 (4-4 FT)
Sanders 0-2,
Diallo 0-1
Freeman 0-1.

So, we score 4 points all on FTs generated from Johnson drives to the basket. Otherwise, we go 0-6 with 2 turnovers.

Over the first 16 min of the 2nd half:
Johnson 1-6 (0-2 3P)
Gettys 2-4
Freeman 1-4 (1-1 FT)
Sanders 1-4
Williams 0-3 (0-2 3P)
Omoruyi 1-2 (1-2 FT)
Diallo 0-2
Sa 1-1

Over the first 16 min of the second half, the shots were spread around quite a bit... but no one could score. So, we went 7-26 during that stretch in the 2nd half, with 6 turnovers.... Johnson and Sanders were 2-10, while everyone else was 4-15.

Overall, for that 22 minute stretch, we went 7-32 (0-4 3P, 6-7 FT) for a total of 20 points, with Johnson and Sanders going 2-14 (.143) and everyone else going 5-18 (.278).

First 14 minutes.... 28 points
Middle 22 minutes.... 20 points
Last 4 minutes... 12 points

We were running hot for the first portion of the game (on pace for an 80 point game), went ice cold 3/4 through the first half and through most of the second half, then got hot again at the end.

We just don't have scorers who can consistently fill the basket for 40 minutes.
