Game Thread RU vs Michigan St, 6:30, BTN TV , story :

12-27 from the foul line which is just another indicator of poor shooting by Rutgers.Today Rutgers scored 65 points which is the most so far in the B1G after four games .

this is the reason why we go through coaches every 5-6 years, no one has solved it, but this team is simply not good enough....not talented enough to win games in the league...that is Pikiells job. He was a solid hire but its revisionist history if people think this was a slam dunk hire. Unfortunately Pikiell was about as good as it was going to get. The job and perception is unattractive. Pikiell is facing an enormous task, he can coach but its all about recruiting and thats what he has to do...lets just be happy we have a guy that can do at least one because Jordan didnt do either
And Pikiell didn't have the luxury of having a bunch of scholarships to give out right out of the shoot like Rice and Bannon were able to do so he's got to make due with the current roster for a couple years and a year or two from now no one is going to want to hear about what he inherited.

Agree. Competition has gotten much better, but even with that, it appears several players have regressed.
They haven't regressed since it's a completely different system. Players are being retrained to play actual college basketball rather than the horseshit Eddie put on the court. We don't have the players for the system yet, but some of the pieces will be in place. And yes, Pike will recruit well. The allure of playing time is big, and we have a lot of players in the Northeast who would like to play in front of their families.

MSU has shot the ball extremely well but how many contested versus open threes? We get killed on doubles and rotations. Good teams find the open man. You would think we would have caught on more quickly to stay close to #14 Harris. Not a great defensive effort by any means tonight.

Great team hitting everything while we continue to miss layups and free throws. Not so sure this is our "worst" defensive effort of the season. I'd give that to the 2nd half of the Seton Hall game. I haven't seen us stop hustling tonight which is more than we can say for that half or the PSU game.

Maybe we hustled but we gave up tons of uncontested dunks and closed out the 3 point line worse than we have all year.

That's fine but I'm talking about making passes to open players at their feet, horrible closeouts. Missed FTs and missing tons of two-foot shots at the basket. Def agree with you that the Jordan era was horseshit but I still want to see team improvement since the opener, and right now, I don't.

You don't think the competition has anything to do with that?

Saw the score ... Ouch ... Starting to think WBB will get more wins than MBB.

I already said it does. I'm not as concerned with the wins. I'm concerned with improvement. FTs, closeouts and good passes to OPEN players have nothing to do with the competition.

several of the players that Jordan supporters touted are not good at this level, you can figure out who they are..thank god at least that Jordan was let go so we are one year ahead

I think Pikiell has to decide before the season is over that some scholarship players probably should transfer to a lower level of competition which would free up a few more scholarships for next season. Otherwise next season will be just more of the same that fans are now watching.Talent matters in power conferences and Rutgers is woefully lacking.

MSU is an elite program. They have great talent at all levels, are coached extremely well, play extremely hard, are deep, and can shoot. Well.

We have very little of any of that outside of the coaching seems to be much better. Can't make shooters though or talent. We just don't have what it takes at this level. The kids played hard, but just can't make any shots, and are pretty weak across the board down low.

It's a process, just like football. And like football, it's all about recruiting.

agree. we don't have the time to wait on a bunch of these guys who likely never develop. In this league you seem to either show it as a frosh or you don't. .

I'm sure there will be attrition and hopefully not to guys that we NEED. But I don't believe you can build a program with Spring signings. What I am talking about is Fall signings like guys like Dahntay Jones and Kadeem Jack and not the best looking girl at closing time. Wish we had a full class coming in next year but all we have now is one player - Geo Baker unless the other guy we got as a verbal reclassifies.

its bad because of Michigan State

No! Don't get fooled by the uniform.

Pikiell took a step back here. He allowed players who were successful offensively to not buckle down on D. Very disappointing.

For all that Sanders did on the offensive end he gave it away on the other end.

You can't give up 90 points.

Coach will get it done it will take some time. He needs to recruit the heck of the 2018 class. He also needs to have a serious conversation with a few players and let them know that they would be better off dropping to a lower level. This game was frustrating to watch and I hope we can win at least 2 games at this point.

this team will have to score if it wants to win, this isnt the Big East where schools are offensively challenged and you can pick them off......it wouldnt make me feel better if RU lost 70-50 today

Come on, you obviously have a big problem with Sanders and you are entitled to your opinion but I cannot fathom how much worse it would've been if he weren't on the floor. If Pikiell thought Sanders was a net negative you can guarantee he would be on the bench. Somebody needs to score. Be fair.

This game tells me we have 60+ points in us offensively. We were plenty good offensively to have beaten PSU on Saturday.

We made Michigan State look very good.

His D was beyond bad.

I think Pikiell made a big mistake burying Laurent but allow Sanders to coast defensively. Not foundation building. A huge step back tonight. I get not getting max effort from a team every game. That is where coach needs to step in and sit guys not giving the effort. Everyone took Sanders off the dribble tonight.

The stuff about process is overstated. Without a high-priced, high profile, charismatic, proven winner coach, we are running in-place. We are planet systems away from competing. We are participants, only. Short of a NJ Fab Five arriving on campus, or a Rick Pitino or Shaka Smart tackling the job, we are destined to be this generation's Northwestern.

We gave up 89 points and lost by 25+. Just like last year.

unfortunately this is the likely scenerio if Vegas gave odds

Sanders was probably tired from carrying the rest of the team on his back offensively. Check the box score tonight if you're not convinced. Johnson had 15 on 6-12 shooting and Gettys had some point in gar-bage time. Beyond that - zero from anyone.

what it shows is that we have closed the gap with the cupcakes and beating them but we have not against league foes. Its still a 5 game improvement over last year already and maybe give them one or two more.

There is a reason I shouted down all those people who thought we could go from 7 wins to 16 wins in one season...and even I got fooled after the SHU game, reality is going from 7 wins to maybe 12 or 13 wins is improvement given the poor talent we have here

Sorry today was a huge step back. Let's see how we do next game. Have to get back to the way we have been playing. Defense 1st.

We go from FB to BB, but the FG problem still exists and from a distance too. Also turns out that we can't hit consistent jump shots while moving or making 15 footers shots while standing still. Very confusinggame.

I still think 4-5 wins can still happen. Have to keep opponents under 1 point per possession. We cant score 72+ so we have to dig in defensively

Disagree. Michigan State made Michigan State look good. The announcer said that, and I agree with him.
