What a lovely way of saying how much you love me. I fear that it's
Too much too little too late

If Carey and Mathis want to play together they don't need to go to UCONN to do it. We would be more than happy to accommodate here on the banks. I'd have to think winning in the B1G has advantages to playing in the AAC.

Well not landing Mathis would be a big blow. He RT'd the tweet mentioning Uconn in the drivers seat as well. Recruiting sucks

Hopefully we nab Mathis but it's so annoying to see all these schools hire "x coach" to secure a commitment. Would be nice here. Hoping for the best.

Recruits retweet things all the time. Let it play out. If we don't get him, I have confidence in Pikiell that he will still get a really good class.

NOT a UCONN fan at all - but - maybe I'm missing something here ..... & I could be totally ignorant - however the hiring mentioned in this article (Raphael Chillious) sure does not look like one of those 'contrived' - 'sketchy credentials - but monumental connections to a particular kid' - kind of hires - this does not appear to be a case of hiring a guy just to bring a target on board - it was nearly four months ago - March 28, 2017 - when it was announced that that Kevin Ollie was hiring former University of Washington associate head coach Raphael Chillious for the role vacated by the removal of Glen Miller. Ollie had a senior staff opening & Chillious had the college coaching credentials & was needing a new gig.

it would be great if Mathis decided to become a part of something great on the Banks - but if he sees someplace else as a more comfortable & cautious 'safe bet' ... well that may simply be for the best ... what Pikiell & Company will be accomplishing (and they will accomplish it) over the next several years will not be for the faint of heart or cautious.

Agree this is not "sketchy" for lack of a better word. But it's still a staff addition that helped appears to put one team over the edge in the recruiting sweepstakes. If the guy is qualified that's even more reason for Rutgers to do something similar. Not saying in this case/this guy in particular but it's just been going on for years.

Very discouraging news regarding Mathis. Hopefully our highly regarded staff lands someone else soon. Other than Doucoure, it hasn't been too impressive so far.

There are some impressive new names and performances emerging this July from prospects at SG, RU will be more than fine regardless.....There are also some guards that RU offered before they even offered Mathis that are still readily available.....Mathis is clearly the target the staff preferred, but this is not a situation where all the eggs are in this basket.....I'll hold off on one particular name that had a huge weekend and is drawing major interest.

While it's disappointing to see in the article, it certainly isn't over. The staff is clearly showing Montez a lot of love. It's on us now, the fans, to really continue to show our desire for him to come here. Regardless of whether UCONN is in the drivers seat, we aren't dead in the water. Shoot him *positive* social media messages (tweets, FB posts etc.) and show him that RU is the spot to be!

There is an article on scout in which Montez is quoted. He says that he might commit in a few days or a few weeks that he is getting very close to announcing. He wants to go over things with his family. He says it will probably be between RU and Connecticut that they are the two leaders. He says that his family really loves Steve Pikiell. He likes what Coach has done with RU in only one season. I don't think this is over yet. Apparently Ollie of U Conn has been recruiting Montez since middle school but he and his family really like our coach as well. Hopefully the fact that Coach Pikiell had traveled all over the country to see Montez play might just have some affect in showing Montez how much he would mean to our program. Coach is working so hard and will not stop. He is relentless. I just hope that Montez can see that he could be a real game changer by announcing for RU. He can be the guy who finally gets us headed in the right direction. The RAC could be rocking again very quickly with just a little bit of luck. I can just picture it with Geo running the show and passing the ball to Montez to finish the play. Here is hoping for a bright outcome. After all these years we could use a break and have something go our way.

Thats a good spin but if he is deciding in that timeframe than its all UConn has all the latest chatter has Uconn leading so don't see how that could change again in that short span.

There are plus and minuses for both schools.

Wonder if VTech is still a factor ?

Buzz Williams has them going in the right direction and the Baltimore/DC area is still an ACC hotbed.

One thing I hope he considers (selfishly) is that Pikiell is probably a 90% lock to be here all 4 years of Montez's time on the banks - wheras Ollie nearly lost his job this summer at UConn. I'd only put Ollie's chances at 50% to be there all 4 years of his college career (as of now).

Link to the Scout article. Thanks for the heads up, @knights1212!

LAS VEGAS -- In mid-June, Montez Mathis cut his list to eight schools, now he's gearing up to make his college decision.

"I'm close to committing," Mathis, who stars for Team BBC on the Adidas Uprising circuit. "I'm going to be committing soon."

What does soon mean to Mathis?

"Couple weeks or a couple days," he responded. "I'm going to commit soon. I just want to talk to my family."

Mathis has taken visits to Rutgers and Connecticut and at this time doesn't have any others scheduled.

"If I'm close to committing, I'm not sure I'll do any more visits," Mathis said.

"I think Rutgers and UConn are in the lead," he added. "Virginia Tech is in the mix, but Rutgers and UConn are the in lead."

What sticks out about Rutgers and Connecticut?

"I like how coach [Steve] Pikiell has turned the team around since he got there," Mathis said. "He's a real out going person. My family loves him a lot. They talk a lot and not just about basketball, so I like coach Pickiell a lot."

"With UConn, coach [Kevin] Ollie has been recruiting me since middle school, so that's a plus," he said. "I like how Kevin Ollie develops his guards and gets them to the next level."

On the court, Mathis, who ranks No. 66 overall, has been productive all spring and summer and he showed that on Thursday night in a blowout win over Play Hard Play Smart, scoring 14 points on 6-for-11 shooting.

article for those looking for a quick read. Sounds good us, family is heavily involved obviously.

Family doesn't always win out...my brother was fortunate enough to have been recruited to play DII ball. My parents loved Coach A. He was relentless in his recruitment. My brother chose to play for Coach B. These are teenagers making decisions, so sometimes what makes the most sense for the family is the opposite for the kid. Hopefully NOT the situation here...but just saying it happens.

Last year was not pretty for UCONN - yes, changes have been made
- but if 2017-2018 is not a significant improvement ....
- Ollie does not get another mulligan - there will be a quick trigger because - UCONN absolutely cannot afford to drift into mediocrity in the American Athletic Conference - UCONN has a modest residual stockpile of individual 'image and aura' from their championship days and the time in the previous generation of the Big East - but UCONN knows it is essential to deliver present day results in order to sustain the 'aura' - otherwise they lose their grip on the perceptions & they slide & the image fades and they become that team that used to be "UCONN"
... but is now just another American Athletic Conference team -

Lots of "they's" when referring to Rutgers positives and lots of "I's" when doing the same for UCONN.

Not good.

What brings you to that conclusion? All the latest intel is Uconn is leading and will commit there shortly.

What latest info?Crystal balls go to Rutgers. Also, Carey is likely not headed to UConn anymore with several better offers. He has tweeted Rutgers stuff for the past five months. I would say 75% chance he comes to Rutgers. I could and might be wrong. Just a guess on the information posted. He has retweeted so much Rutgers stuff.

Actually two I's in the RU section while UCONN only got one. Plus zero they's for UCONN, so RU wins on both counts if that is how you are scoring.
