Everything is offense around here.....Gettys occupies space and battles for rebounds on the defensive end and probably took away a couple of extra buckets in the first half by playing good positional defense.
SHU adjusted and made the guards dump the ball into CJ and took their chances that CJ would beat them. He missed a few, but that's part of the process.....if CJ was a finisher and hit those shots, he would not have landed at NC Wilmington, he would have been at another B1G program.
Folks, Delgado is a true PF, not a Center by trade, but has all the tools against a bigger and not as mobile defender....there are kids like Swanigan at Purdue and the Boilermakers other Center Haas, that are true 6'11 , 7'0" power players that are capable of 20 and 15 like Delgado showed last night.....Gettys kept Shaq pinned to the bench, he was in position most of the night on defense and got pinned with some bad calls defensively.
It's not the offense, it's the defense and Gettys is our best option because he understands rotations, boxes out and fights for rebounds. I don't have a plus-minus item, but until Shaq and Diallo are better defensively, Gettys is our guy.
AND...last night essentially sealed how critically important the commitment was of Mamadou Doucoure as a 6'9 225-230 power forward earlier this week, it is a HUGE pickup.....if he doesn't score more than 5PPG as a freshman next year, fine with me.....but his tape shows foot quickness, ability to defend, rebound and he competes defensively like Gettys has done all year for RU, just a step or two quicker/faster....... This game is a 20 point game if Gettys isn't on the roster, amazed people are getting on Gettys here......sure, he got excited making some moves outside of the offensive game plan, but that's life in the Big Ten or against legitimate competition. He'll help us for 18 B1G games, we are not winning more than 3 games the rest of the year, if he is not on the court.
