Really interesting story here. 7th grade kid sees girls basketball team cancelled by the school (Catholic school), so she asks to join the boys team. School tells her no. Family sues. School kicks the family out of the school. Judge throws out case originally, but suit is brought back because they're arguing governing bodies now.

Private school. What can they sue for? There's a reason it's called boys basketball.

And what if they like the school otherwise? Hypothetically good teachers, good academics, etc. What if they just disagree on the way the sports programs are set up?

Your daughter wants to play basketball and the school won't let her ... if you want to support your child how would this be a waste of money for the family?

I heard an interview with the girl where she said they didn't want her to play with the boys 'cause she was better than the boys. In the clip they showed it looked like she could play.

Then stay and wait for HS to plays girls basketball.

Last time I checked elementary school sports is not one of the three "R's"

Not a fan of girls joining boys teams, but believe parents need to show their daughters that they will go the distance for them when their daughter feels they are being treated unfairly and parents agrees.
Wonder if title ix would apply in this case because the girls team was dropped or grammar schools aren't affected by it.

found this online:
Title IX also applies to private, parochial, or other schools if they receive federal funding through various programs — or if they are formally affiliated with another school (such as the diocese) that receives some federal funds.

Wow,

So now people want girls to play on boys teams. No one is forcing her to go to a Catholic school. If they don't like it, why not switch schools?

Should a boy be able to play a sport if his school only offers it for girls?

Please. Girls have no business playing on the boys team likewise boys have no business playing on the girls team. Has a boy even been given permission to play on the girls field hockey team ?

too bad....the girls team shut down, she is a girl. If it is TRULY that important to them they will either go to another school or put her in some rec league...what is the big deal here.

Bunch of Neanderthals on this board. The girl loves basketball and the school doesn't have a team. Just let her try out for the boys team for Christ's sake. What's the hell's the problem? It's freaking basketball.

Expelling both kids from the school is extreme so there may be something more at play here with the parents and school but, if not, this is an unforced error by the diocese and/or school.

Female athletes can be every bit as serious and dedicated as guys. I would hope that is obvious.
I don't think is a single person in this thread who would disagree with that. I certainly don't. And that's out of fear of my sister and all my nieces who if they felt I thought otherwise would let me know in their own "special" way. LOL

But that is not the point we are discussing in this thread. At least it is for me.

This whole thing is ridiculous, and I'm glad they chucked the idiotic parents out.

It's CYO basketball. If the school or parish doesn't have a team you play for the next nearest parish. That's the rules. The parents (the father was in law enforcement and mom is a lawyer/maybe? judge?) should be embarrassed.

Actually, yes.
Uh....no.
Well there was that case on LI where the boy was originally from Ireland (I think it was Ireland) where like in a lot of the world boys/men do play field hockey. I think he won.

And I think there was a case not too long ago in NJ where the ladies made a big stink about it. Not sure how that one turned out.

Some of them get mad when we hold the door open for them and just as mad when we don't. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Yep. It has happened in field hockey. Massachusetts, I think.

So much for a simple solution. What's the big deal to let her play? It's coed until they get older. The reason they separate is because of physical development. If she can hang with the boys, let her.

What about the boy who's place she's taking on the team or playing time on the team? Doesnt that kid deserve to play "boys" basketball?
Best player plays. They didn't sue for playing time. School will not allow her on the team which makes me believe she is better than the boys.

She's part of the parish
There's no girls team
She's good enough to make team.

Lots of women haters in this thread. Guess that comes from countless rejections

Must be nice to waste all that money. Lawyers everywhere are very thrilled.

Reading through this thread, there are certainly a lot of opinions on both sides of the issue. But most of those opinions are emotionally-based, not necessarily based in law. But it seems that the legal standard is not very cut and clear either. I don't know who will win, but this certainly does not appear to be a frivolous lawsuit.

????? not following your illogical reasoning here. Couldn't be that the school won't let the girl play on the boys team because she is a girl. Nope, must be because she is better.

School didn't say she is not good enough to make the team. But instead, they are not letting her on the team because she is a girl. Logic would tell you she is good enough to make the team.

It was a question about where you think the line should be drawn. I didn't want them to take your spot on the Special Olympics team.
Your line is that we should stop the over achievers so that the under achievers can't take advantage. Makes ton of sense. Being part of the special Olympics is something to be proud of.

So ill ask again because you haven't answered the question yet. Should boys be allowed to play on a girls team if there isn't a boys team available in that sport? New Jersey rules allow high school girls to play on a boys team if the school doesn't offer it. What about Boys? Should this rule apply?

Btw, if the kid is that good she's playing on a top travel team playing better competition than her middle school team would be.

To answer your question, yes. Because the rules allow it. I'm glad that we both agreed she should be allow to play. Not everyone can do travel sports. Because It requires travel.
