Good game plan by Iowa

1. Fast inbound and spread out their guys in a wide 1-2-2 offense while bringing the ball up the court - completely took away our full court press.

2. Lots of Iowa guys cutting from weak side to under the basket, so when we doubled the post, there was always a guy open under the basket to receive a pass — and they hit most of their layups.

3. They were ready for our doubling of the post, and had guys get wide open looks because they made three or four crisp passes — and they hit their shots.

4. Zone defense flummoxed our offense in the first half, and took Paul’s dribble drives out of the game. (Side note - bad job by Pike NOT adjusting- should have put Paul at the foul line to receive entry pass and then make plays - instead, we kept Mag there).

5. Having 6-8 Murray either guarding Cam, or shading to his side, made it difficult for Cam to get open looks against Murray’s length.

6. Doubling Cliff before entry pass, and then, if he received entry pass, doubling from weak side. Took Cliff out of the game.

Despite the above, we were within 4 points with lots of time remaining, but we just couldn’t get more than a couple of stops because Iowa’s offense is so efficient, and the lead always ballooned back up to 10 or 11. And freaking Peyton Sandfort was just unconscious for that few minute stretch to basically put the game away.

The defensive plan by Pike and the staff wasn't good today, but its 1 game.

There's a reason why JaMicheal Davis and potentially Baye ndongo are extremely important building blocks going forward.

A) The perimeter defense when Simpson doesn't play, allows too much off the dribble at the top of the defense. It forces the rest of the defense to scramble and shooters will get clean looks.

B) Pike tried to make an adjustment to give Reiber a shot, but he's not going to block or alter shots on defense and isn't quick or skilled enough now in Year 3, to take shots off the dribble or without being left open. Baye ndongo hopefully shows down the road to erase those cuts by Iowa for layups OR steers the guard away by moving his feet.

Griffiths is a player Iowa recruited early and is typically, the type of shooter, that when a defense has lapses, burns you.

Sometimes, you have to match up against very different styles and Iowa, Creighton and Michigan usually present that, when you don't have multiple erasers at the basket or very good on the ball defense.

If Jalen Miller was a 2nd version of Derek Simpson, we could have switched it up and made the adjustments faster.

Add in a very limited offensive player with Mag and things can look like today once in awhile. Recruiting and development with these 2023 kids and beyond will tighten up these matchups.

Really good post, especially #4. I thought the same thing. In a zone like that put Paul in the middle where he is deadly passing the ball and/or taking that 15 jump shot.

We eventually figured it out... but that was after giving up 28 points in the first 10 minutes. It was 28-15 at the 10 minute mark.... putting Iowa on pace for 112 and Rutgers on pace for 60. We then outscored them 50-43 over the next 29 minutes, when we started fouling to kill the clock.

Credit to Iowa for hitting their shots - but we played terrible defense in the first quarter of the game, and pretty bad offense throughout much of the game.

There is no surprises playing Iowa .They always have multiple 3 point shooters and a scoring center. They play zone defense which limits drives to the basket and requires a player at the top of the foul line to take the short jump shot or pass to the corners for quick 3 pointers.Iowa left Mag alone for open shots while concentrating on limiting Spencer 3 point shots.

Great post. Can’t disagree with any of it and every other team in the league will throw their version of this at us until we figure out adjustments.

Good analysis. We were slow to react on both sides of the ball. Just one of those days.

Meanwhile, Northwestern has now won 2 in a row (Illinois and @Indiana), and they’ve also won at MSU, so Wednesday night’s game will be very tough. Need to find a way to win there and then come back t9 the RAC to avenge the OSU loss to get the season back on track.

It also didn’t help that No. 2 for Iowa, a role player before today, dropped 23 points on RU on red-hot shooting. He really lit up Hyatt especially during a critical run in the 2nd half.

Sandfort went 6-8 (4-5 3P) and Murray went 7-11 (3-7 3p), for a combined 13-19 (.684) and 7-12 from 3P (.583). Uncharacteristic of our defense to allow so many open shots - a lot of overhelping, overpursuing, and gambling. We got caught chasing a LOT and ended up giving way more uncontested looks from 2 and 3 than I think we have all year.

Good Analysis. A few other observations - Not typical of Rutgers team play right from the beginning of the game.
- Missed a lot of short shots/put backs under the basket
- Didn't box out: Iowa got offensive rebounds under the basket, layups, and putbacks. One was at the foul line.
- Sloppy passes
- Dribbled near the basket with no place to go and coughed up the ball
- Iowa wanted the game more - we did not make adjustments
- Three or Four Rutgers players had a bad game - a clunker

Thought a subtle to the game …and this is NOT blaming the officals, was that Iowa knew the refs were NOT going to enforce three sexonds and allowed a lot of down screens to be made IN THE PAiNT and then pin and post in the paint without worrying about three seconds being called…this creates all sorts of space on top and on the wings that we were not so easily ready to cover without worrying about a violation

There was, in front of me, two instances the center was in there for 4-5 seconds (not even close to 3) and one time 5 plus seconds …and That doesn’t count other close to three seconds thar coukr have been called to….

Something I’m sure pike will adjust for in the rematch in three weeks

Gotta admit Pike flubbed some adjustments. NOT POSTING Paul at foul line and no screens to get Cam open.

- Iowa wanted the game more - we did not make adjustments

I don't agree with this one. We made adjustments around the midpoint of the first half. We settled down the defense and forced Iowa to grind for their offense (there was a 7 minute span in the 2nd half where they scored just 1 point) while we slowly (god, so slowly) chipped away at their lead until it was only 5 with 8:46 left. And then Sandfort went ham, scoring 11 all by himself over the next 3:30.... hitting as many 3s in that short span as he had in any game all season (and all but one game last season).

In the first 10 minutes, they scored 28 points. It took them another 21.5 minutes to score their next 28 points. Then a guy who the scouting report surely said wasn't a significant scoring threat, had a career spurt of offense.
