Read your own post. Then tell me where I called anyone a name in mine.
I was posting in reference to the name calling about Julie past and present. I have read all the accusations of sexual preference bigotry, age bigotry, IQ bigotry, and whatever. So in this post, I was referencing those you referenced. The assholes was for comedic effect. We cool?

I liked Julie, having met her and talked to her a few times at RU functions and having heard her speak a few times. Yes, she got off to a bad start and the hiring process was a mess, but once she was past that, I thought she did well in fundraising and actually getting the athletic department to function, well, like a department, plus, her only coaching hire - women's soccer - was clearly a slam dunk.

Since nothing obviously horrible has come to light in the past few months, to me this means that she likely had a not-so-great role in the rumored "institutional control" issues being investigated - and which are obviously part of the reason Barchi hired Hobbs. As he said, "I set out to find an interim Director of Athletics who could stabilize the Department before launching a national search..." That to me screams internal/institutional control issues, especially since Barchi in his letter, then highlights Hobbs's legal and ethical qualifications.

At this point, let's see how it all plays out. Hoping for Schiano II.

I thought Julie was a nice lady, and cared about Rutgers. She certainly had to deal with tough circumstances, and working for Barchi, someone always willing to throw underlings under the bus for many of his own shortcomings, and really not being someone positioned to be a leader of athletics and academics at a BIg University, could not have been easy.

Having said that, I spent some time talking to her on a few ocassions, once for an extended period of time in AD's suite at the stadium during a game. She was funny, engaging, and my initial reaction was I liked her.

The more I listened though, red flags went up all over the place concerning things she said and shared. Many I thought were inappropriate, and should not have been shared. I know then she was not going to be a media darling, and would probably say some things she would regret.

She did hire a coach that got the women to the final four in soccer, instituted the "care" program, so her tenure was not all bad.

I hope all of this serves as a wakeup call to President Barchi as well. That sitting back in the BIG and looking forward to the payments is not enough, we have to compete and need a leader. His actions today showed me something. Now lets follow this up with more passion and leadership, and someday, just maybe, Rutgers will start to really compete in the BIG.

Hermann walked into a mess but she sure hasnt' helped herself. I am worried that the report will show some really bad things in the AD since she was let go, probably a lack of compliance across muliple issues... from previous rumors...drug testing, recaruitng etc.

If that's true, then Barchi's statement is going to make him look like an idiot. Granted, that's a possibility, but I would bet against it.

I'm with bac on this one. Julie took over a dismal situation exacerbated by the fact that Tim had the situation covered up with his big smile and great interpersonal skills. Julie took on cleaning out a hornet's nest and got stung more than once! And she stumbled out of the blocks because she didn't fully appreciate the venal nature of the NJ media.

But once she got her footing, she went about making the kinds of hard changes that were necessary. And was effective on almost all fronts. She fell short on the football hiring (and if it were Narduzzi and the big money boys didn't want him, then you can't blame her as Narduzzi would have been a great hire) and that, to a degree, is on her.

She got fundraising going in the right direction even with abysmal signature teams. But in all honesty, 17% increase isn't going to cut it.

Was she to blame in misconduct that may now never come out? Who the hell knows? If she was, then firing her without cause and keeping the investigation secret (perhaps not even accepting a report) is a smart move.

My guess is that Barchi simply did not like her and did not trust her to be the face of the AD without speaking too bluntly. And when Hobbs came along, who probably looks a lot more like Barchi himself in terms of skill set, he was sold. I think he thinks Hobbs can be the fact of RU athletics, and more importantly, can bring in the kind of big bucks necessary to move us forward -- I'm certainly willing to give him a chance.

And for Julie? She has proven herself to be a more than capable administrator and my guess is that she will land in a lateral move as AD somewhere a little bit less "red hot center of the universe" and that 5-8 years from now, we'll all be saying, "Damn, she turned out OK."

Julie was a mistake from the get go, she simply was unprepared for the pressure and the media nor was she attuned to the needs and/or workings of a major university. Obviously she did not hire herself so whoever pulled the trigger on her hire blew it big time. I hope she lands on her feet but doubt we will ever see her in a leadership position at another P5 school.

so I guess one is not allowed to comment about your tear filled post--get over it she was fired for good cause--you must dream of julie at night--yes that's a sad post but only because you even wrote it

Except you didn't make a comment. You accused the OP of having problems. So you started the name calling, and then get up in arms about the "aholes" attacking you. Here's a message, loud and clear. You are an asshole. And you do the same thing all the time -- lead with the name calling, and then claim you're the one being shouted down.

You're entitled to your opinion, but the notion that she was not attuned to the needs or workings of a major university is kind of silly. She was the principal deputy at Louisville, a program that outclasses RU in almost every way.

I was indifferent about her, but the more I read, the more I am glad we have moved on. A change was needed. In any case, I am just glad to see BAC changed his avatar. It was borderline creepy.

So are rock and 66 getting it on at the rac tomorrow ? I say 15 minutes before tip next to the popcorn machine in the name lobby .
Loser buys the popcorn

Being deputy dog at Louisville, a medium size private university doesn't prepare you to run anything akin to a large state university athletic program, she had no responsibility for football and thankfully for her she had no responsibility for the cesspool of a basketball program, nor was she the spokesperson for Louisville athletics, Jurich runs that. Her inability to deal with the NY/NJ media speaks for itself. I don't blame Julie Herman, I blame the people that hired her and put her in a situation that she was unprepared for. Ultimately if she had done a great job she would still be here and she's not cased closed let's move on.

Try to get some things right before posting. Louisville is a public university of over 22,000 students, and has absolutely kicked our butts athletically for a long time. The situation when she arrived at RU was toxic. And now it is far less so, even though there are still malcontents amongst the old guard of incompetents. Hobbs walks into an infinitely better situation because of JH's efforts. AND, he gets to hire a football coach, apparently with sufficient funds. Had Julie been allowed to, we'd be sitting pretty in football right now. Might have actually secured that magic class we all longed for.

I met Julie once. Very pleasant and professional I thought. She inherited a mess - the whole post Mike Rice/Pernetti debacle. She didn't help herself with some missteps at the beginning, and the media smelled blood in the water and went all out to get her fired. I felt she never had a chance. She weathered that initial storm but the damage had been done. She never got to hire a basketball or football coach. She may have put us on the map with those hires. We'll never know and it is time to move on.

I met her as well. And Kyle Flood too. They were both extremely nice and personable. No argument. But that's irrelevant to their job performance.

That same Louisville whose MBB Coach was paying hookers to trick in the dorms? (While Julie was there....).

She wasn't qualified for the job, made numerous mis-steps and she didn't impress on any front. Over a dozen openings she hadn't filled too. No one put a gun to her head to take the job.

She was dishonest and elusive the day she did her first Rutgers presser.. Was a matter of time until she weeded herself out. BAC , is a poor judge of character and should never be trusted.

Did not know the extra details about Julie's handling of EL's speaking engagement:

http://www.app.com/story/sports/col...ailed-and-what-rutgers-must-do-next/76526606/

I find that so called story was printed laughable. First and foremost its up to Barchi to tell LeGrand that news. I think he is passing the buck here and blaming Julie for leaving a message. We have no idea the circumstances of why Julie didn't call back and quite frankly I would doubt the truth of this story. Trying to blame Julie Hermann for the mess up when its Barchi who made the decision is another way that this man passes the blame. From what I know Julie and Eric have a very friendly relationship

I don't think that Julie was a bad choice. She was #2 in a P5 athletic department. When you're Rutgers with its place in the pecking order (and with obvious constraints), you typically have three choices for both coaches and administrators:
  1. Similar position from a level below (a head coach from a G5 program)
  2. Assistant from the same level (coordinator form a P5 program) or
  3. Retread looking for redemption.
Julie fell into the second category and she brought to Rutgers the knowledge of what it takes to run a successful program. And she had the most experience running an athletic department of any athletic director Rutgers has had up to that point. She put in place a lot of positive improvements which should serve Rutgers well in the future assuming that the new leadership continues on the path she started. Specifically fundraising, improving the fan experience, and improving student athlete support.

But it does seem that when she was hired she wasn't quite ready for the top position. It didn't help that she entered at a very turbulent time where everything was under the microscope, far greater than she ever expected or experienced before. That doesn't mean she is a bad person or a bad athletics administrator, just that it wasn't the right position for her at that time. I'm pretty sure that she'll land on her feet and learn some valuable lessons from the experience.

I thank her for her dedication and service over the last couple years and wish her luck in the future.

A good portion of the blame should go to the search firm, which neglected to thoroughly research her background. Considering the reason Pernetti was fired, hiring someone with abuse charges was the absolute worst thing that could have happened. She further caused herself harm with comments about the wedding video and Tyree. It's not Kansas here.

Mixed feelings today as Flood is gone but so is my girl Julie. I think she definitely will have some culpability in the report findings and that plays a part in what happened today but also a big part here is that she was caught up in the agenda driven behind the scenes mess at RU and didn't have enough power behind her to stay. She was dealt a bad hand with Flood and she almost got rid of him two years ago if the donors weren't so insistent on a guy with prior head coach experience. If she pulled it off then she would still be here today. Julie never got a fair shake from the Pernetti tards at all or the bigotry crowd or the media and while she made some media missteps, I feel they were so minor and blown out proportion by her enemies to push their own agendas.

That's why I supported her so much. The more ridiculous arguments that were used that she was the worst AD in history or that she was a woman or that she only cared about volleyball or Olympic sports the more I was going to back her because until you can come with concrete stuff that she was doing wrong, all the criticism based on Star Ledger dying and Disney experience was just silly. See unlike the Pernetti tards I was going to support her and try to move us out of that Rice mess instead of wallowing. I hated Barchi too but at some point you move on and support the good of the school. So unlike the Pernetti tards, I will support the next AD here and not be bitching about Julie getting fired everyday. She didn't get a fair shake here but it is what it is. I am sorry to see her go but if Rutgers had to do it to move on in this situation then it had to be done.

The caveat to all Rutgers fans is while this helps us move on short term, the fact is the amount of dysfunction within the university is something that has been there for a while and I fear will only get worse as we get the Big 10 money 5 years down the road but that's a topic for another thread

Julie will be a success wherever she heads next, I am pretty confident of that so I wouldn't worry about her finding a job so good luck to her in the future. You helped initiate some much needed changes and shakeup in that athletic department that helped us get up to speed in the Big 10. The increased fundraising and better communication to the fanbse was notable. Under your watch wrestling and womens soccer have burst onto the national scene. The baseball facility got off the ground and you were well liked by your coaches. So thank you Julie for your time here and best of luck with your future endeavors
julie, dont let the door hit you in the ass on the way out!
