I'm guessing a lot of NJ connections politically and financially. Things that RU needs.
I completely was not thinking of it in that way but that is probably more important than sports connections since we are in the BIG10 now. Now we need to raise money to become champions in the BIG10.
Hobbs is close friends w Gov Christie. Greg Brown is on Christie's campaign team and big donor.
I was assuming Christie was the "strong referral". Smart move IMO. Wouldn't be surprised if Rutgers gets a little extra from Trenton next year coincidentally equal to the amount of our new coaching staff.
He was on sabbatical. Dean Hobbs is a solid choice. He is a uniter, not a divider. He will build consensus. He raised a lot of $$$ at Seton Hall.
Wow - less than 24 hours - New AD (with strong credentials) and it has been said - a new HC will be announced quickly.
He maybe not a Sports Admin lifer - but figure he will get things organized - put skilled people in right spot - and suspect he will have very little tolerance for any clown trying to play power manipulation games / leak inside info games.

So from what was said here he hired Kevin Willard and Anne Donovan for their MBB/WBB programs.
Kevin Willard is 84-80 overall and 30-60 in conference at Seton Hall.
Anne Donovan from what I found was 23-57 overall and 4-34 in conference.
That inspires a lot of confidence in me. Thank god he's a permanent hire. [eyeroll]

Hobbs seems like a good choice for a short term basis (less than 5 years). It seems he is good at bringing people together, cleaning up scandals (legal guy), strong leadership, and is a political guy that can assist with Trenton. Although he has 2 years of AD experience at SHU, he is not a sports guy. He is what we need right now but I can't see him as a long term guy to be here past 2020. He can be the transformational guy to clean up the issues in our athletic dept and help us transition to a better athletics organization in the B10. Hopefully he can be a good administrator / CEO of athletics while bringing in strong sports people as coaches and empower them to do their jobs.
Political ties in NJ are huge for this role.
Pat is an awesome individual. Very smart and hard working. He will be a very effective fundraiser. Obvious question mark is re FB but he is a natural leader.
And this is why in three years this board will once more be blazing with next wanting his @$$ out of here. It's like "lather, rinse, repeat" for Rutgers.
Now I am really worried about this hire as Senator Lesniak just endorsed him. Says a lot

Also ... deeply concerned about the close ties to Christie, who's never been a friend to Rutgers, and has traded away Rutgers assets to the Norcross machine in order to maintain his equilibrium in Trenton.
Don't expect this to be good for Rutgers Athletics' competitive prospects in the Big Ten.

You live in NJ and don't see the benefits of hiring a guy with close ties into Trenton? This hire may very well be the reason Barchi is saying money is not a factor for the next coach.
Hobbs was installed over Seton Hall athletics to address ethical concerns. Gov Christie asked Hobbs for help examining Bridgegate. Barchi fired Hermann and hired Hobbs without conducting a search. It's not hard to read the tea leaves and understand what Barchi's priority number one is and why Hobbs was hired.
Rutgers needs a NJ guy who understands NJ politics, media and general environment. If you bring in an AD from another part of the country you risk a Julie 2.0. I mean Julie made a simple joke about the SL staff and she has been getting crucified ever since.
well didn't think they would fire Flood until yesterday - but my biggest fear has always been Barchi involved with the hiring. Good or bad and we shall see- but looks like significant politics involved here and if true Christie's fingerprints all over this.
I don't understand why some think this is a home run hire. He only has one year as an interim AD and never dealt with a football program. Seems he is under-qualified compared to the potential candidates we had last time around. I am not bashing the hire, just don't really know if it's good or bad.
Truth. The man can put a room full of donors in a giving mood. I have seen him in action. He is a uniter, not a divider. Don't know a person who has ever had a bad word to say about the guy.
Maybe, maybe not, we'll see. So long as the AD has the following they can be successful:
- a vision
- a strong AAD for Fundraisin
- a strong ADD with experience in football/basketball
- a strong AAD with Olympic Sport experience AND the understand that they are important to the overall success, of the entire department, as well
...no doubt in my mind (and we've never had ALL of those, here, at the same time...).
