How Does Riding Time Impact Scoring in Wrestling?

I think if you accumulate more than a minute of riding time you get an extra point at the end of the match. It depends on the overall score how it influences the match. Can be the difference in getting 3 or 4 points for you win if it gets you to an 8 point differential.

Yeah, that's what I got from the folks on the Iowa board. I started a thread there (see link) about 40 minutes after I started this one and didn't get an answer here. I was watching the Minnie-Michigan match, which was awesome and came down to the very last match, and the announcers kept talking about it. What a conference for wrestling, huh? :-)

You usually see riding time be most meaningful in two situations:

1.) Heavyweights (all weights actually, but you see it often at 285): So many times you'll see a match that's 0-0 after the first period, 1-0 after an escape in the second, and 1-1 after an escape in the third. If a guy can hold another guy down a minute longer, there's your match.

2.) Major victories: Whether you let a guy up and try for another takedown is often based on whether you have that extra bonus point in your pocket. It's all a points strategy thing.

Good stuff, Phans. How do the wrestlers know if they've got more than a minute of riding time as a match progresses?

Riding time advantage is displayed on the score board, or somewhere in the arena. Kind of like the play clock in football or shot clock in basketball. But it seems like TV usually doesn't show it on screen and announcers don't always mention it like they should.

Thanks, Hawkeye--that was the missing part of my question and I was still wondering about it.
