How will we get foul shooting to be better?

Besides Kevin Bannon method? Serious question. This team is so close to actually competing and winning.

Our big men need to BEND THE KNEES when shooting....just watch them versus players on the other teams.

We won't until we turn the roster over. Today was tragic. I am demoralized. On the positive side, this is the first time in years that a loss has upset me this much.
Bull Sh#t. Underhanded,Underhanded, Underhanded. Doorson & SA, in particular, Don't belong shooting overhanded. Neither has ANY touch. If both had gone underhanded, guaranteed that they would have made at least 1, probably more. We win. Make them practice that way. They won't do it, they don't play. They'll do it & they will improve.

^^This

I read an article somewhere where they asked several NBA coaches and players how to improve free throw shooting, and I think it was Steve Kerr who said, basically, it takes good shooters to make good free throw shooters. So, yeah... recruiting.

I love the heart and effort this team gives, and I love having quality coaching on The Banks after wondering if we'd ever see it again. But, there are some things coaching and effort just can't compensate for.

My mantra is . If we don't win in regulation we don't win. Unless our physical talent is superior which it never is or we are smarter which we never are this will be who we are.

I've played basketball all my life and if you suddenly had me change my foul shot to underhand the results wouldn't be pretty. Not as easy as you make it out to be

What kills me is this guy is probably going to get us 14 wins without anyone who can shoot the 3 and virtually nobody who can hit free throws.

I don't care if there wasn't a single RU fan in the whole arena. You still have to make at least 70% of your free throws or your not going to upset many teams in the Big Ten unless they have a very very off day.

I agree we need to turn the roster over, but I am surprised you are demoralized, I actually feel better after this game because of how good the defense, in the grand scheme of the things beating Wisconsin isnt as important as getting better game by game and getting closer to winning. Last 3 games have been very promising for the program

No it's not.Teach & have the challenged guys practice underhanded. Our FT shooting will improve.

I agree that, as a coach, you have to keep trying to improve whatever talent you have on the current roster. That means, especially in situations like RU's trying anything that makes sense. But I wondered why, even in the NBA where stakes are much higher, some guys just don't improve. Are their coaches not putting enough emphasis on it? I doubt that.

I did a quick Google search and found this interesting piece:

http://www.coachpintar.com/free-throw-practice-help-improve-game/

I'm sure there are more detailed studies somewhere out there, but some good observations are made by this guy anyway.

I'm going to guess FT shooting is like the last thing coaches recruit for.

Did you ever shoot them that way? I have shot them both ways. Not difficult to switch at all.

Of course. How many people in Division I and the NBA shoot free throws underhand? I'm thinking Wilt and Wilt.
The great frank McGuire convinced Wilt to shoot that way in 1963. Improved from 505%to 61%,highest he ever shot in his career. Went back to overhand the next year. Rick Barry, one of the greatest FT shooters of all time, shot them that way, as did the great Dolph Shayes, who led the NBA 3 times.

I answered this in a thread a few days ago. Some say, we will get better when we turnover the roster with better FT shooters. Well, duh, that's true. But for now and we don't know if Pikiell and staff are doing this, but if I were the coach, I would do the following two things: 1) create a real game atmosphere and have them sprinting up and down the court and then force them afterwards to shoot FT's. It's part mental and part physical. Make them doing it after they're tired. If the person misses, he and/or the team runs sprints.

2) Have a FT contest. The first one to miss, runs sprints. You can even do it at both ends and if one side misses, they have to do wind sprints. You keep this going until the team learns that not focusing at the charity stripe is part of the reason why you've missed so many. Now this isn't going to help the Doorsan's and Sa's of the world, because if you're bad, you're bad, unless you work with a coach and on your free time you keep practicing. That has to happen away from team coaching.

I know it's your basic carrot and stick move, but I remember this helped me a lot when I played and when I coached, especially the first one, which you try to recreate real game situations.

Hate to say it but some of our big men play like true stiffs. Just take a look at the stat lines of Sa, Doorson and Diallo today.

And to think that I was concerned that Gettys couldn't matchup in the B1G this season. Gettys makes some of these of theother bigs look like they have no idea how to play the game.

It is a rare player that switches to underhanded free throws during a season and has enough confidence in the shot to make them.

During the summer I watched Florida's Canyon Barry attempt to get teammate John Egbunu to switch. That lasted all of three workouts of Egbunu airballing free throws and missing worse than before.

It takes weeks of commitment to making that change so I'd be absolutely shocked to see a Rutgers player suddenly switch this season.

The recommendations that the team convert to underhanded free throw shooting confirms one thing: this is the internet.

Can you imagine a reporter asking why Pikiell hadn't instituted that at a press conference. It'd be viral in a half hour.

So what?

This. We beat Wisconsin 2 years ago, and although the win was great, it was a fluke and didn't mean anything for the progress of the program. This game shows that there is actual improvement, continuous effort, and strong defense. There is not much we can do this season about lack of shooting, but I'm pretty excited about the prospect of a Pikiell team that plays like this and has some shooters.

So it's silly. Ha ha silly. The type of silly that results in loud laughter if you're alone when you read it, or muted snickers if you hear it from someone near you. That kind of silly.
Really! Tell that to Rick Barry, Daolph Shayes, if he were still with us, & Rick Petino, who got one of his guys to adopt it & improve exponentially & who is now an NBA rook shooting them that way.

Yup. It's rampant. The whole team should do it. What is Piekell thinking?
Have you ever done it? I have. If you haven't I wouldn't denigrate it. Much softer shot. Ball comes down softer & more lightly on the rim & you get many more to roll in. Would benefit guys like Sa & Doorson greatly who have no touch & just throw up bricks overhanded.

You guys are massively underestimated the impact of conditioning in this

We are playing at such a higher intensity level and it's still not a natural comfort zone for s lot of our players

Another year of S&C makes the kids play st this level more naturally which makes it easier to focus and gather to shoot a higher percentage of Fts

At least RU shoots free throws better than Seton Hall, a team that no doubt will be instituting the underhanded free throw process very soon. Once SHU does it, along with the inevitable avalanche of underhanded free throw shooting that will obviously come next, RU will then adopt it.

Ridiculing something about which one clearly knows nothing--a sure sign of genius.

Shack,

No. Our misses are all over the place(front/back/left/right). The team can't shoot. Period. I cringe when I see Freeman shoot free throws.

You trust the coaching staff to fix it. It is after all, what they get paid for.
This is the one area where the team has certainly regressed. They shot better last year, and actually improved a bit as the season went on. Now, it is just deteriorating. They are hitting 55% of their free throws in conference play. Even though the team is deep, they really had no one to sub in at the end of regulation when they expected to be fouled. Say what you want about Laurent this year, but it would've been a good thing to have him over the last couple of minutes of regulation.
