Hungry Like The “WOOLF!” Appreciation Thread

He's our best freshman right now. Simpson I think is going to be good but there's way too many rough edges to smooth out in-season.
I don’t get why you have to hate on Simpson every chance you get. Yes, he is inefficient and isn’t a lead ball handler rn. He was forced into a spot that was unfair for him and wasn’t great at it. But he has an ability to get past defenses and shoot or pass that basically no one else on the roster possesses. He was inefficient the first few games yet we looked better when he was on the court vs when he was off.

I thought he played much more in control tonight and didn’t force things. His last jumper had a nice arc on it that he needs. His shot has been more of a line drive at times. What he showed tonight is that he can make adjustments. He’ll be fine.

He is very athletic to go along with his size. Has a nose for finding and rebounding the ball off missed shots. Real good footwork and shooting touch. Looks like a seasoned big man vs. the competition we have played. Pike is playing him a bunch along with Cliff. I think he’s going to really help us in B1G play. When have we ever had such a capable backup at the center position.

I thought he was supposed to be raw. He is anything but raw. Very impressed he went up with his left when on the left hand side. He did miss, but it was VERY refreshing to see.

Yes …very noticed. He is very coordinated with the hands, feet and his hoops IQ looks very high for someone who hasn’t played as much as reported. His timing on defensive rotations and help has been very good .

Man… I get that we’re not into the conference play, trust me, but this kid may have been an absolute STEAL by Pikes.
Agree 100%. Think about how much better he already is than fan favorite and 5th-year senior Ralph Agee from last season. He has great footwork and touch around the basket — pretty unusual for a young big, especially a lightly recruited one!

Absolutely. Biggest most pleasant surprise of the season, so far, to me. Good size, athletic, good footwork and court sense and brings the effort. He'll struggle, at times, in the B1G, but he'll also have some good games, IMO. Great pickup.

His HS team had a Top 100 kid on it and another high scoring guard that went to the MAC (I think Ohio). His HS game tape really showed some basic post moves, but when they're against HS kids, it's hard to see if he's moving fast or just looked methodical.

He also played football (we all know this), but this might be the 1st 9 to 12 month period where he didn't dedicate himself from June to November on football.

He looks thinned out and more like a true power forward. I would never say a poor mans former Purdue forward, Trevion Williams, but the comp makes sense. Williams played HS ball at over 300 lbs coming out of Chicago and Purdue and Matt Painter offered him anyway.

Woolfork doesn't have the athletic ability of Williams, but in another year or so, he could be very close in terms of that type of weapon.

He is B1G body capable and offers another post up offensive player, which is the baseline to running so many offensive sets.

RHJ, Mulcahy and Caleb were ideal post up guys, while Cliff got better at it last year. Now we have almost an entire roster, including Mag and Hyatt, who can bully-ball a smaller defender to score. What makes Woolfork so valuable is he has shooting touch to the FT line, so he's not limited to being a post or "on the block" player....if those other players can post up, he can cut to the basket and score, he has excellent hands.

He has a baseline shooting touch.

He has a mid range touch.

He has a decent looking FT stroke.

He is a fundamentally sound player on both ends of the floor and is clearly worth 14 to 18 minutes a game right now.

Your first sentence is a very fair point. This is a Woolfolk thread and I shouldn't have taken it in another direction.

So to stay on topic I like that he does a lot of the little things well. Just needs to iron out the turnover bug but I could see him being a Zed Key type. Different body types but they have a similar sort of game, I think.

So many big men over the years just struggle to catch the ball or hold onto rebounds. I chalk it up to getting used to the physicality of the college game. Woolfolk seems to have bypassed that stage of development. Maybe the football background helps there. Either way, I'm impressed so far.

A smoother out of the gate version of Rashod Kent?
No, not that similar. For all the talk of Woolfolk being a football player he’s not as built as I expected. Not even close to Rashod Kent on that measure. Good frame to start a career with though. Like him a lot.
