BB Recruiting Hyatt Update

I posted this on the Round Table:
Interesting. We've taken McConnell - a 2 - while Hyatt is more of a swingman type. I wouldn't take the Texas traditional transfer if Hyatt is on the table - the latter is infinitely preferable. We also still need that grad transfer point.
Kind of confusing as to where recruiting is going - not a bad confusing, just confusing.

As of this time Seton Hall already has 13 scholarship players for next season. It would be best for us if he decided to reclassify to the class of 2018. His home is close to us and we still have two open scholarships. It would give us a very good outside shooter at small forward and he would get major minutes. I think we are visiting him today. hopefully that goes well.

On SHU: "They make the tournament almost every year."

This is how quickly perception can change if we can get back to the dance. SHU has gone to the tournament the last 3 consecutive years.... over the prior 21 seasons, they went just 3 times (and their 3-year streak is coming after a 9-year drought).
It is also about coaches effectively selling recent history to kids that haven't been on the earth that long (perception = reality).

If he comes, the roster is going to be very interesting.

Fast paced play, with lots of subs. That would be a fun thing to watch.

2-3 deep at most positions besides PG. Mostly a young team.

Good problems to have as a coach.

To a kid, this is pretty much forever. I agree that RU has to get to the post season one way or the other and it will not be easy.

Exactly - once we turn the corner and get a few years of success, perception with recruits can change quickly. I'd imagine most high school kids start "paying attention" to programs around 8th grade or so... so your last 4 years of history matter more than anything else.

Get to the Dance a couple years in a row, and people will quickly start forgetting about the 25+ year drought.

There are players hitting the grad transfer market every day, so it's hectic for sure...

If you are looking for Hyatt, I would agree 100% with Corey Evans article that 2018 would be an easier path, vs 2019....2019 only adds more likely schools to evaluate and get involved with the recruitment....

My own personal opinion is Hyatt (like Baker and like Mathis/McConnell), would have the biggest impact at Rutgers, because there isn't a definite/established starter at his position/skill level. He is the prototypical SF that RU has not had in years (dribble, pass, shoot, rebound). ....I believe his fastest path to playing time, is at RU, where he would become a potential star, while playing within the team concept....he is a team first player and can grow together with Baker, McConnell, Myles Johnson, Mathis etc....he is a high character/high IQ "building block" for RU, where to me, he's another piece elsewhere.

I also think the grad transfer item is not something I am a believer in for the backcourt....but the staff is pursuing guards for a reason and they assuredly know much more than I do.....BUT, I am a believer that in order to get the maximum out of a younger core, you have to play and learn from your mistakes, improve and grow....and a grad transfer may help for this one season, but I am not keen on cutting minutes away from the guards we have recruited.

A sit-out guard transfer in Young, would be fine, as an additional "hedge" against not getting whatever preferred PG target you like (ie Mulcahy etc.).....there is an undercurrent of belief that Mulcahy could be captured by a Villanova/Notre Dame type of offer....if you land a sit out transfer, he doesn't interfere with Baker, Mathis, McConnell, Kiss as far as playing time for this year and solves your problem of having a ready made guard next year.....

McConnell and Mathis would be thrown to the deep end of the pool this year, (like Baker was last year), but I'm betting on 2019-2020 and am not as concerned about 2018-19 as other fans are.......

I am also a believer that McConnell's tape/swagger/shooting is still underrated and is a very legitimate alternative to Mulcahy if you want a big guard lineup....(However, Mulcahy and McConnell with Mathis/Baker/Kiss/Hyatt/Thiam/Harper Jr, would place multiple shooting threats on the court, at almost ever position ......McConnell and Hyatt in 2018's class would be my best case scenario and immediately raise expectations for 2019-2020 season, while allowing 2018-19 to be a "sorting out season", while improving and winning some games.....

I don't where Hyatt reclassifying helps him. It may help Rutgers but I don't see what he gains from it.

VTech being involved would concern me.

Have never seen Mulcahy's name associated with ND.

why wouldn't reclassifying help him also, as opposed to spending another year in prep school?

The sooner he gets to d1, the sooner he can try to get to the next level. If he is good enough, reclassify to 2018. Heck, come to the banks if you’d like, Hyatt.

Why Russ?
Well, he said there's nothing better than the west coast and Pac-12 basketball.

I loved my time on the west coast in the 90's and, while the Pac-12 is probably regularly the sixth best basketball conference (that's a guess I'm too tired to look it up), I enjoy watching Pac-12 basketball.

Especially if Bill Walton is the analyst.

I was surprised to read that since they are regularly the worst conference. Thanks

Russ...I've lived out West for 20 plus years. There's nothing better than driving to work and having Bill Walton on AM radio going for 15 minutes without interruption. Hosts just let him go and they blew threw all of their spots. Was great and funny as hell.

Bill Walton graduated from the Cheech & Chong School of Broadcasting. That said I have fun listening to him do games.

you mean WLSD.
Liked him at first but got tired of his rants.
The West Coast doesn't deserve the West Coast.

Because he doesnt have to waste another year of his life in high school when he can already be playing a prominent role on a power 5 team? Is he going to improve more under a h.s. staff vs a college staff?

Yes he can-----at that age he can improve physically which you're going to need at the college level.

You see the same thing at the Pro Level-----the elite 1 and done kids who leave after their freshman year invariably end up playing most of the time in the G League.

Very few are ready to make the jump mentally or physically.

Same thing HS to D-1-----it's a big transition.

Generating a lot of interest that would only continue to build if he stays in the 2019 class. Obviously he needs to do what is best for him both academically and athletically, but it seems clear our chances are as good or better if he re-classes to 2018.

Rutgers also visited 2019 Ish Massoud again. Assuming no reclassification for Hyatt. If we only have two spots in 2019 and If the three 2019 targets are Mulcahy, Hyatt and Masssoud...who do you take? Obviously, PG is a priority if we don't get another one this year, like a good sit out transfer. We probably have a need for another Big in 2019 because right now we will only have Duke, Johnson and Shaq Carter...with Carter being a Sr.

As of right now:

4 Star Hyatt is ranked 62.
4 Star Massoud is ranked 77
3 star Mulcahy is ranked 145.

In a hypothetical situation where all three want to go to Rutgers and the staff doesn't have anyone transfer out.... Massoud and Hyatt. You can do things to cover up poor ballhandling but there's no escape from poor shooting so I'd go for the shooters.

Hyatt and Madsiud. But don’t worry about it. We will have a spot for all three.

Massoud and Mulcahy .Need taller front court shooter and a point guard.Of the three I think Massoud most likely going to Rutgers.

D1 to pro is twice the jump. He could always redshirt if building himself up was an option. Looking at Hyatt, he is already a big kid. At the current moment, they are stressing development and playing time to him as that is what he seems most interested in.many players don’t improve greatly over four years. Eugene Onoyuri took a huge jump, and will take another this year.
