I posted this on the Round Table:
Interesting. We've taken McConnell - a 2 - while Hyatt is more of a swingman type. I wouldn't take the Texas traditional transfer if Hyatt is on the table - the latter is infinitely preferable. We also still need that grad transfer point.
Kind of confusing as to where recruiting is going - not a bad confusing, just confusing.
There are players hitting the grad transfer market every day, so it's hectic for sure...
If you are looking for Hyatt, I would agree 100% with Corey Evans article that 2018 would be an easier path, vs 2019....2019 only adds more likely schools to evaluate and get involved with the recruitment....
My own personal opinion is Hyatt (like Baker and like Mathis/McConnell), would have the biggest impact at Rutgers, because there isn't a definite/established starter at his position/skill level. He is the prototypical SF that RU has not had in years (dribble, pass, shoot, rebound). ....I believe his fastest path to playing time, is at RU, where he would become a potential star,
while playing within the team concept....he is a team first player and can grow together with Baker, McConnell, Myles Johnson, Mathis etc....
he is a high character/high IQ "building block" for RU, where to me, he's another piece elsewhere.
I also think the grad transfer item is not something I am a believer in for the backcourt....but the staff is pursuing guards for a reason and they assuredly know much more than I do.....BUT, I am a believer that in order to get the maximum out of a younger core, you have to play and learn from your mistakes, improve and grow....and a grad transfer may help for this one season, but I am not keen on cutting minutes away from the guards we have recruited.
A sit-out guard transfer in Young, would be fine, as an additional "hedge" against not getting whatever preferred PG target you like (ie Mulcahy etc.).....there is an undercurrent of belief that Mulcahy could be captured by a Villanova/Notre Dame type of offer....if you land a sit out transfer, he doesn't interfere with Baker, Mathis, McConnell, Kiss as far as playing time for this year and solves your problem of having a ready made guard next year.....
McConnell and Mathis would be thrown to the deep end of the pool this year, (like Baker was last year), but I'm betting on 2019-2020 and am not as concerned about 2018-19 as other fans are.......
I am also a believer that McConnell's tape/swagger/shooting is still underrated and is a very legitimate alternative to Mulcahy if you want a big guard lineup....(However, Mulcahy
and McConnell with Mathis/Baker/Kiss/Hyatt/Thiam/Harper Jr, would place multiple shooting threats on the court, at almost ever position ......McConnell and Hyatt in 2018's class would be my best case scenario and immediately raise expectations for 2019-2020 season, while allowing 2018-19 to be a "sorting out season", while improving and winning some games.....
