Just for the heck of it,say the Pac 12 decides to expand to 16. Assume all Mountain West and Big 12 schools plus BYU and Houston, are interested. If you are the Pac 12,who do you take.

Back in 2012 the two Oklahoma schools asked to join the PAC. The PAC being the idiots they are told the two Okie schools that Texas would have to be part of the deal. Texas told the PAC that if they came over that Texas Tech would have to come with them. The PAC said ok but the LHN killed the deal seeing how Texas wasn't about to share any of the revenue with the rest of the PAC schools for that network and the PAC requires that all members have equal TV revenue sharing.
How many of you remember when the CFL had the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Ottawa Rough Riders? The Rough Riders had a logo very close to the Rutgers logo.
The two things that killed the deal was the PAC demanding that Texas be a part of the deal and Texas not sharing the rights/revenue to the LHN. The PAC should have taken the two Okie schools anyways seeing how that would have killed off the Big 12 and forced Texas to go indy or make a reasonable deal with the PAC in regards to the LHN.The Pac12 network is setup to be a collection of regional networks. The LHN would have fit reasonably well into that scheme, with $ issues to be decided. The real killer was the number of Pac12 presidents that refused to accept the academics of TT, OSU and maybe OU.
That is the problem UT has. It has to have a partner. For the BIG, their partner was ND or maybe RU, depending on the timing. Kansas is a small possibility because of basketball. The best fit is the SEC who would happily take Oklahoma and maybe even TT to consolidate the market in Texas. Of course, the ACC would take them as a partner with ND, but why would UT find that attractive?
Were called the Regina Roughriders before changing their name in 1958 to Saskatchewan taking the name of the Providence the the city of Regina was located at. After the name change the R was replaced with an SHow many of you remember when the CFL had the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Ottawa Rough Riders? The Rough Riders had a logo very close to the Rutgers logo.

Geography and time zones have long been a problem for the Pac8-12. The only way for them to put a dent into that problem would be to expand into the Central Time Zone in a significant way and the more states they can add, the better, so long as Texas is part of the mix.
So my recommendation would be that they invite TX and OU, and hope that those two are not shackled by commitments to TT and OSU respectively.
Then, assuming that those two are free to join without their state-mates, the Pac12 should add Kansas (better option than K-State, as it is AAU, and easier to fly to, being just an hour away from Kansas City's airport) and, possibly Iowa State.
I don't see Houston as a Pac12 type institution and BYU would not likely be very welcome there due to the cultural chasm that exists between that university and those already in the league. Boise State adds nothing noteworthy and, evidently, has a terrible academic reputation.
The only institution that I think the Pac12 might consider that is located between the coast and the Great Plains would be UNLV, which has the attraction of being a "destination" location for Pac12 fan bases. Academics might be questionable however, though probably better than Boise's.
That's why I mentioned UNLV...Sin City is LA East and NY West all rolled up in to one...Porn, Glitz and Glamor...Nightlife Galore...A 24 Hour City!!!

Thier current stadium is very nice. Saw them play last year.Plus their new stadium will be pretty sweet if it gets built.

Because Texas and OU don't want to go to the SEC.Everybody seems to be assuming that while the Big 12 are hunting that they will eventually end up being the hunted. Which I agree with. And everyone is assuming that the Pac 12 will offer the best packages to the Big 12 defectors. But no one is talking about the SEC. Why is the best fit in terms of realignment not Texas and OU in the SEC. ESPN is in control of the LHN and a good bit of the SEC package.
Option #1 was OU, OSU, UT and TT.The #1 option - a few years ago - was Texas, A&M, Oklahoma and OK State. Obviously never happened, but that plan A cannot happen now since A&M is doubtful to ever leave the SEC.
IMO, the Pac 12 is staying at 12 forever, but I could see going to 14 with Texas and Oklahoma. Frankly, OK State & Texas Tech are not real attractive options for anyone on the west coast. (Although one could make a good argument for two divisions with the original Pac 8 schools + the Mountain/Desert schools/whomever the conferences ends up adding. Texas and Oklahoma are the only schools big enough to counter the problems of having all four California schools in one division.
But with the LHN, I cannot see the Pac 12 ever adding Texas. Oklahoma seems like some faraway school with barely any geographic connection to the rest of the PAC 12.
Personally, I would really like to see UNLV or Nevada + New Mexico added. However, these are turrible football programs. Really bad - with little hope of ever being worth anything. Beyond that, BYU will never be added (I cannot see the Pac 12 ever adding a private religious school).
Boise State is an option, but is not an academic fit (though neither are Nevada, UNLV or New Mexico).
After that, you end up with Fresno State and San Diego State - but the Pac 12 already pretty much rules these areas anyway.
