I call it the chicken or egg scenario.

You need to act quick to get a good coach but it can hurt you with the AD hire since some candidates may not be interested in a job where they are stuck with a football coach for 4 or so years. Usually the AD wants to hire a coach.

In the pros the teams that fire both the GM and head coach usually hire the GM first.

since RU is a beauracratic organization the AD hire can take a matter of week or months. If we wait for an AD then it will be January before we hire a coach.

Does it make sense to have a model where you a Louisville model of an AD and Asst AD where the AD control revenue sports? I guess this was the Louisville scenario when Julie was there. She had control of everything but football and basketball.

Maybe bring in MacConnell as the AD that also is the guy for Football and Basketball while you have an Asst that is in charge of non-revenue sports.

Due to recruiting, you are forced to hire the HC 1st. You just can not wait to hire the AD 1st.

This has already happen in Rutgers with the Men's Basketball HC, we couldn't wait to hire a AD 1st.

I would aspect the same to happen with Football.

when Julie was hired it took 6 weeks to hire an AD.

Unless they have a short list compiled it can take 4 to 6 weeks again. That will leave you with the 2nd tier of candidates from college and NFL assistants.

On a positive note, bowl season is about 4 to 5 weeks now so some college coordinators or midmajor head coaches may not be looking for a new job this week.

I think that when Pernetti was forced to resign it was unexpected so the search literally started at or around the time he was let go. One has to think that this scenario has been playing out for weeks, so there had to be some advance work done on finding a replacement for atleast the AD position.

if they decide on MacConnell then bring in Schiano as HC and assistant AD in charge of football / basketball.

Not sure that last basketball search without an AD went too well. Not the ideal situation but with Rutgers there always seems to be some additional elements to deal with. Should be interesting to hear what the plan of attack is. Ideally you would like to have a coach in place in a couple of weeks. Not sure they can pull that off.

Get the right coach & the AD search & selection process may not be that difficult .

AD first!!!!! No MacConnell, he was part of the mom and pop athletic department era.

You have this backwards. Hire Schiano as HC and AD and let him hire Kevin Mac as his executive assistant AD.
Let KMac run the day to day with GS oversight.

Get a retired AD to serve as an interim AD and hire the HC. Keep in mind that the best candidates will be hired in the next 10 days. You can't wait.

Ideally you want the AD in place before you hire the coach, but Rutgers isn't in a position where they can wait until the middle of January to make an HC hire. Then you will end up with another recruiting class like Flood's 2014 class.

It's the same reason Illinois made Cubit the HC on a short term deal. They weren't ready to hire the AD, so they gave Cubit some guaranteed money to hold things together for one season.

We are hiring a football coach, our team plays in the B1G.....if we don't have a B1G caliber AD in place, is it not a risky proposition to go forward with the football coach hire?

We were in the same position as you are in now and it can work out great.

Our new chancellor fired our AD and then Paul Chryst went to Wisconsin.

What to do.

New Pitt Chancellor Pat Gallagher appointed a search committee to recommended head coaching candidates.

Pitt chancellor interviewed ALL recommended candidates and then made the selection of Pitt new head coach Pat Narduzzi. Narduzzi heard directly from the "BOSS" that he will give him all the necessary support he needs to turn Pitt into a Top 25 football Program.

New Pitt Chancellor then appointed a search committee to recommend AD candidates.

Pitt chancellor interviewed ALL recommended candidates for AD and then made the selection of our new AD.
New AD heard directly from the "BOSS" that he is committed to Pitt Athletics and will give the new AD all the support and finances to make it happen.

First year results: Pitt Football 8-4 waiting for Bowl Selection. One million upgrade to Pitt football locker room.
Ten million upgrade will be made to football facilities which Pitt shares with the Steelers.
Watch Pitt recruiting once Narduzzi gets going.

This could be the opportunity you guys need to turn things around.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

I hate to toot my own horn, but I knew there had to be a plan in place...Barchi didn't wake up this morning and decide to make these massive changes, this has been in the works for a while.

It appears as though a permanent AD has already been hired, which makes it pretty obvious that things have been in the works for awhile now. There are several new threads on this situation. Hopefully it will work out well for us.

Where did your new President come from?

Patrick Gallagher received his Phd in Physics from Pitt.

He was the Director of the NIST (National Institute for Standards and Technology) in DC.
In 2013, he took on the additional role of Acting Deputy Secretary of Commerce.
He served in both capacities until June 2014 when he came to Pitt.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!
