I'm Concened About Ouf FT Shooting

A lot of our bad foul shooters are shooting with the same technique this year as last. Doing the same wrong thing over and over only reinforces it. They need to bring in a shooting expert/instructor.

Also concerned that we don't seem to have a go to O player (Corey, Mike, Geo, Issa, Omaruyi?).

Hoping Pike can correct quickly.

We haven't needed a go to guy yet. It will be Corey breaking down the D but now he has options to pass to with Freeman, Geo, Mike and even Issa. Foul shooting must improve or it will cost us games.

Last I checked Pike doesnt shoot the Fts
the players do
I am betting they shoot 100s a week
worries me too
but
they hit what they hit

Agree with Chow, though - if you're shooting 100s a week with improper form, it's just reinforcing mistakes as muscle memory. Perfect practice makes perfect - if you aren't practicing the right way, you're not going to get any better.

What? You don’t think being this bad of a free throw shooting team is an issue? It cost us chances to win last year and we’re not good enough to overcome it. Today is not an anomaly. It’s a problem.

I think four games is too little to be making judgments and also that the numbers are not what most people think they are.

Season totals from the line.:
Thiam- 6-7
Doucoure 6-8
Freeman 7-10
Baker 4-6 (and he shot 85% in hs so i'd be stunned if this continued)
Williams 13-17
Sanders 7-9

None of those are bad.

Omoruyi has been bad. But of the seven guys who will play the most minutes he's the only one with a sub 67% ft percentage (and i bet the guy with that, Baker, will end up our best shooter). Eugene shot 62.5% last year.

Sa and Mensah are also bad but I doubt the end up either shooting more than 50 fts this year.

Still a very small sample size, but looking at who's taken the most FTs so far, and their hit rate
19 - Omoruyi - 37%
18 - Williams - 72%
10 - Freeman - 70%
9 - Sanders - 78%
8 - Doucoure - 75%
7 - Thiam - 86%
7 - Mensah - 14%
6 - Baker - 67%
6 - Doorson - 50%
4 - Sa - 25%

If Omoruyi is going to be playing the way he has been and drawing a lot more defensive attention under the basket, he really needs to improve that rate.

There you go! Been preaching this for last 3 yrs. BTW, nothing wrong with the form. Just different.

It's different. It's associated with how "girls" shoot baskets. It's not sexy.

But if you're really a TEAM guy, you'll do what it takes to improve your FT's so we win a few close ones.

MO
PS If we had great jump shooters...I would have suggested Hal Greer's approach.

Pike has shown to change the offense as the season goes on. No reason to get worries at this point.

A player struggling at the line has some sort of mental block. That player can practice day and night, but without the proper mindset, they will continue to struggle. I have to imagine our players have access to a sports psychologist, no?

And sometimes they're just bad shooters with terrible mechanics.

FT % from our "minutes " guys aside from Eugene is 74.3%. So that's improvement so far... we just need to get Eugene straightened out. Hopefully he just had a bad FT game yesterday but he was our best player nonerheless.

I tried to emphasize that exact point before. It's a Eugene issue right now, not a whole team issue.

Just to update the numbers after game 5...

Total FTs and %
25 - Omoruyi - 40%
18 - Williams - 72%
12 - Freeman - 75%
12 - Sanders - 75%
9 - Doorson - 33%
8 - Doucoure - 75%
8 - Baker - 75%
7 - Thiam - 86%
7 - Mensah - 14%
4 - Sa - 25%

Again Omoruyi took the most FTs on the night, though he made 3 of 6. Doorson unfortunately went 0 of 3. The two of them accounted for 6 of our 7 missed FTs. Outside of Omoruyi, though, the rest of the guys who see the most minutes areall shooting in the mid-70s or better.

Relax Mo. This has the makings of our best team this century.Get out those shades because the future looks bright

We're talking about a difference of 2 points per game, assuming we shoot 20 foul shots and make only 60% vs 70%. Not saying those points aren't crucial, just trying to put it in perspective.

Very true. And late game shots are definitely not going to Shaq Doorson and are unlikely to be heavy Eugene.

As I've said several times already, 6 of the 7 guys we play a lot of are shooting FTs fine. Not as big an issue as is stated.

Updates:

Total FTs and %
25 - Omoruyi - 40%
23 - Freeman - 61%
18 - Williams - 72%
14 - Sanders - 79%
11 - Doorson - 45%
10 - Doucoure - 80%
10 - Baker - 80%
9 - Mensah - 22%
7 - Thiam - 86%
6 - Sa - 17%

Really poor FT shooting night from Freeman - but much more aggressive this game, getting to the line for 12 shots. While most our "minutes" guys are shooting fairly well, the two guys who have gotten to the free throw line the most have gone a combined 24-48 (50%).
