If Rutgers is looking to be a legit B1G program, they have to move away Greg Schiano as far as possible. Yes it took him 6 years to rebuild Rutgers from where they were left behind by Terry Shea. That in itself should be commended. But for the next 5 years, he could not turn the table... get over the hump... take the program to the next level.
Yes, he did a good job recruiting the players he got who turned into pro players. But he couldn't lead those same players to a conference championship, let alone a BCS game. I know Rutgers has a great APR ratings and had players who were great representatives of the university. But unfortunately it all comes down to wins and losses 95% of the time.
Schiano's time has passed a long time ago and to hire him means that Rutgers is going backwards. I think that if Rutgers say "money is not going to be a problem," they should go all in and try to get the best coaches available, starting with Mark Richt. He has similar traits as Schiano as far as the off the field accomplishments, having players with character, and he will suspend players when others would give them a free pass. Plus it doesn't hurt that Richt's worst three records since 2001 are 6-7, 8-5, 8-5. I would make Richt's representative say that he's not interested so that the fans can see that the Rutgers admin are trying to improve this program.
If (when) Richt turn down Rutgers, they should go after a proven HC or a proven Coordinator who can light a spark for Rutgers, just like Schiano was a proven Coordinator when he was hired back in the day. There are plenty of choices out there who deserves the same chance Schiano got in 2001. (If theyre still available at this time) Dino Babers, Matt Rhule, Kirby Smart, Brett Venerbles, and others should at least get a call to see if they're interested. Plan C should be Schiano. Al Golden should not even get an email since he will more than likely bring his boy, Mark D'Onfrio with him. Mario Cristobal should also be avoided since he hasn't done well as a HC.
Sorry for the rant but I thought I would throw my 2 cents in. I do know that i will get destroyed by the Pro Schiano people here. Regardless if Schiano is coach or not, I will hope nothing but the best for the Rutgers program.
