What sort of impact do we think the portal/NIL will have on coaches serviceability?

Obviously we have seen coaches jump ship for better opportunities and bigger NIL bankrolls, but what will happen to the coaches struggling to win?

Since all of these rosters are turning over year after year will there be a bit of an adjustment on expectations for coaches? It was always 4 years for coaches to “get their guys” in the program. Will that remain is? Or is there now a more immediate expectation to win and be competitive?

Will be interesting to see that play out.

This whole NIL thing sucks for college sports in every aspect. There better be some sort of solution coming down the road because watching these "kids" prostitute themselves is a real turnoff. Oh how I miss the days when Freshman couldn't play and you couldn't declare for the draft until after your Junior year.

It's a good question.

As anti-Pike as I've been, I am starting to feel a little sorry for him.

Imo, with the insanity getting exponentially worse each season, something is going to have to happen. As a sport we collectively need to agree on transfer restrictions. The schools, the coaches, and the NCAA need to hold hands on that. My fear is that human greed will win the day, and the coaches who complain about the wild wild west out of one side of their mouth will complain about not getting a kid eligible immediately out of the other.

But coaches are burned out. Fans are turned off. The tourney sucked ass this year, and that's no coincidence.

The only people who probably enjoy this are fans of the blue bloods. The rich get richer.

I can't see a contract being longer than 4 years but college ADs are complete morons with negotiation. I would rather have a big NIL bank roll and a 4 year deal than a small one and 6 years.

An easy argument could be made that if you are getting paid over $3m per year - there should be expectations to win immediately and nearly every year.
At least make the tournament.

Coaches aren't taking a pay cut while "waiting to get their guys".

If people are going to call spending $5m on a roster that didn't win a waste of resources - then that same $5m on a HC that didn't win should be the same waste of resources.

You're just starting to feel a little sorry for him? Jeez, you're a harsh critic. You're acting like he's purposely trying to ruin the team.

He's a good guy caught in an impossible situation. Yes, he deserves to be criticized for crappy offense/rotation/recruiting. But to not recognize the difficulty in navigating NIL at cheap old Rutgers is not fair.

The NCAA has already given away their ability to impose transfer restrictions in their settlement agreement with the DOJ and a number of state attorney generals.

3 year contracts with no extensions will be more common

The extension part was responsible for lengthy contracts and buyouts..we will see less of that as the excuse of how can recruit with only one year left on contract is irrelevant now

good points

(1) I get the sentiment about feeling a little sorry for pike. He’s in a very tough spot . He signed up to be a coach. Now he’s expected to be the GM of essentially a minor league professional program in an EXTREMELY volatile market. Can’t be fun/ far less rewarding than what the sport just a very few years ago.

On the other hand he gets a few million reason$ each year to ease the pain. So I find it a bit hard to feel bad for him

(2) as far as your comment “Fans are turned off. The tourney sucked ass this year, and that's no coincidence.”

Honest question - is this just your personal opinion or is it based on any facts?

For example has there been any actual dip in attendance or tv viewership for college BB as a whole that can be attributable to this issue.

I ask since I fear (a) the only people who care are older diehards - probably most on this board - and that average fans don’t give a crap one bit, thus (2) unless this matter can be proved to directly result in LO$$ OF MONEY then absolutely nothing will be done , since, like everything / always it comes down to $$
