I was looking at some of the statistics so far now that we're 4 games in and noticed some interesting things.

We're the 4th ranked pass def. in the B1G, but we're the 11th ranked pass def. efficiency. Essentially we're getting killed on big plays.

We're 13th in run def. ahead of only PSU and we're giving up an average of 181.8 yds a game.

We're dead last in passing efficiency as well as passing offense.

#1 in kickoff returns and currently the only B1G team with a kick off return for a TD. With Grant gone I imagine we fall in this rapidly.

We lead the B1G in punts at 25 (ouch) that's an average of 6.25 punts per game.

Takeaways: We're vastly improved in our pass defense from last year, but need to minimize the big plays. Although most came in game one with Ross torching the secondary.
Our run defense needs to get better. Was hoping with the return of Hamilton and our starters having an extra year of conditioning and experience this would be noticeably better.
The passing stats speak for themselves and there's no need to harp on them.
Need to sustain more drives and cut down on how much we're punting.

Think the run defense is more of a LB problem than a DL problem. Hester has been cleaning up all their missed tackles.

Playing New Mexico, who racks up big rush yards , makes our run D stat look crappy.

Our defense has looked much better this year. Seeing continual improvement game by game

The linebackers don't have a chance with this defensive line. DL does not need to be double teamed so our linebackers are getting blocked. That's why Hester will lead the nation in tackles despite the fact that he dives at ankles on nearly every play.

I tend to agree our defense is improving game by game, and hopefully next year they can continue this upward trend.

Whenever the leading tackler on your D is a safety it's not good. Almost always should be a LB.

Elmer Fludd left the team in a bad state in every way possible, the worst being a depleted cupboard of talent. That hurts the most. A great coach can get more out of his players but their physical limits will impose a ceiling. This is where we are right now. It will take some time to get past it. He was a cheap hire up front but a very, very expensive hire in the long run.

how can you say that we are stacked with 4* OL and DL HS recruits; these are kids all the big schools were after.
