This guy compiled data for every team to see how the offense and defense perform with that player on the court vs. off the court.

This certainly isn't gospel (if Geo Baker happens to be hot from 3 when Peter Kiss is on the floor, that's not really anything Kiss did) but interesting nonetheless.

Here are our guys' Net Offense, Net Defense, and Overall Net, expressed in points per possession:

The numbers don't always add up exactly due to rounding

Eugene Omoruyi 0.03 0.09 0.11
Geo Baker -0.03 0.05 0.02
Montez Mathis 0.02 -0.12 -0.10
Myles Johnson 0.02 0.07 0.09
Ron Harper Jr. 0.03 0.01 0.04
Shaquille Doorson -0.12 0.07 -0.05
Peter Kiss 0.05 0.07 0.11
Caleb McConnell 0.03 -0.07 -0.04
Shaq Carter -0.01 -0.13 -0.14
Issa Thiam -0.06 0.12 0.06
Mamadou Doucoure 0.12 0.06 0.19
Joey Downes -0.20 0.34 0.14

Not Surprising:
1. Eugene Omoruyi matters a LOT on defense. +0.09 with him on the floor.
2. Shaq Carter has a lot of work to do on defense. -0.11 on defense with him on the floor.
3. Issa Thiam hasn't been good for the offense. -0.06 with him out there, the lowest on the team.
4. Shaq Doorson helps on defense but hinders the offense. -0.12 on offense but +0.07 on defense.

Surprising:

1. Peter Kiss has strong numbers on both sides of the ball, and ties Omoruyi for the highest net ranking (aside from Doucoure's tiny sample size against backups)
2. The defense has been good when Thiam has been on the floor. +0.12 is the highest rating on here.
3. Our defense is much better without Montez Mathis on the floor.
4. Baker's defensive number (+0.05) is solid especially since from the eye test I can remember him getting burned on screens a lot.

Also, just from your observations...first, it's not surprising that Thiam would be rated highly on D. Last year and early this year, before his issues, he was one of our best defenders. Second, Baker plays against some of the top PGs in the country and averaged 34 minutes/game so its unsurprising he gets burned every now and then. That doesnt make him a bad defender.

Other than that, I agree with above posters regarding these numbers seeming very off.

According to these numbers at an overall +0.14, Joey Downes should be starting. Enough said.

They should do one for which 4 players impact our foul shooter the most, positively or negatively. Or maybe it doesn't matter.

At one of the Court Club meetings Pike said he felt the +|- was pretty meaningless

Its because montez is on the floor vs the best offensive playets usually, correlation does not mean causation
