The Iowa State opening has roughly the same stature/attractiveness as the Rutgers opening. Monitoring the candidate list for Iowa State should give us an idea of the candidates we should be discussing here.

Disagree. We have our warts but ISU is arguably the toughest P5 job. They have no recruiting base and are a distant 2nd fiddle to the Hawkeyes in their own state. And Ames is not exactly high up on the desirability scale for a coach to live.
The bigger question is how much is ISU willing to shell out? If it's 3 million then they'll still end up getting a more sought after candidate

Not even close. They have no natural recruiting grounds, market, and are in a league that is arguably on life support. Iowa State is nothing more than a training ground if they don't land an alumn that wants to just come home.
RU would be viewed as just a training ground at this point also if they can't be competitive money wise, but there is so much more upside here if someone can turn the corner. The recruiting base is here for someone that is able to capture the hearts and minds of HS athletes.

If Iowa State is clearly lower than Rutgers, how did they land Paul Rhoads, with defensive coordinator credentials at Auburn and Pitt, and Rutgers landed a guy with offensive line credentials at Delaware and Rutgers?
The only way Iowa State is as good a job as Rutgers is if they are willing to pay more than we are. While at times I think the "sleeping giant" and potential upside that is thought to exist at RU gets overplayed, when compared to a school like Iowa State, it is accurate. Rhoads had his moments there but he and his predecessors have struggled to win with any consistency. I will give them credit for making the change despite a buyout exceeding $4MM. That does demonstrate a commitment we have not seen here.
He had one winning record, 7-6 in his first season, and went 32-54 over 7 seasons. He was some home run hire.
Iowa State does not have to deal with Rutgers Athletics reputation as a graveyard for coaches. The Iowa State program can boast of Johnny Majors, Earle Bruce, Dan McCarney, and Gene Chizik. All moved on to significant positions after Iowa State.
They kept him after 5 consecutive losing seasons, it took 6 for them to make a move.
And that's simply because his buyout became affordable. We are the better job hands down.
Will be interesting to see if Rutgers lands a better candidate that Matt Campbell.
