I got into a discussion with a couple of guys today who claimed that RU has done the poorest job of any D1A school at turning out NFL qbs. And that RU wouldn't really be able to compete with the Big Boys until they got a difference-maker at that position.
The best I could come up with were the drink of water for Mike McMahon and Ray Lucas. Did I forget somebody or have we consistently been that weak at this most important position over the years ?

Savage ... Hart .... Lucas ..McMahon ... Teal ... Also Dodd overseas.

We have struggled in this area, no surprise there, but there are 128 schools in div 1A.
Do you really think we have been the worst?

Off the top we are better than Army and Uconn, umass Lucas almost equal.

We haven't done that well as a program developing quarterbacks, but even the best programs can only point to a couple of top names when it comes to NFL guys. There are only so many starting quarterbacks in the league, and only a small fraction of them are elite.

Uhmmmmmm I think we can blame Kyle for the lack of good QB play. And Mehringer is following in Kyle's footsteps regarding building potent offenses. Of course if we would have had common sense, realized Flood was not qualified from the start, hired Fuente one year before he got red hot, or even Babers, we would have an offense. Rutgers only has itself to blame. Bad hires.

No offense but your friends sound dumb. You can always ask which school has had turned out FB, db, wr, rb, CB, or any of the positions. Sounds like a bunch of people that detest or look down at Rutgers ( I meet them all the time, I live in PA)

I would live to see the schools they graduated and root for

If given the chance and he stays healthy this kid Giovanni R may impress us down the stretch.

i remember hearing that alabama has had one qb win a start (AJ McCaron last year) since like the late 80's..

I would bet there are a shocking # of P5 schools who produce NFL QB's that get more than a "sniff" of the field. Some, on the other hand, are above-and-beyond surprising (Maryland, to name just 1...).

LSU, Virginia Tech and Oklahoma can join that group

Wait. Off the top of my head I can recall Bert Jones of LSU....one of the best qbs I've ever seen. And Oklahoma had a guy named Aikman. Doesn't VPI have Tyrod Taylor starting for Buffalo ?
Oklahoma currently has Sam Bradford and Landry Jones in the League.
And LSU has Zach Mettenberger.

Teel did I think 2 years with Seattle.

Dodd plays in an Italian Pro League.
A good D3 player can play in the Italian pro league because most players would rather get a real job then play for the $2,000 a month they pay during the season. The level of play is not that good. It below FBS level.

Nova was the best of them all and he should be playing in the NFL. He was good.

????? serious or being sarcastic ? He was a loyal Rutgers player and did his best and should be respected for that ... but his best was usually throwing the ball to the other team. The NFL didn't have the slightest interest. Why would they ?

Sanu could have been as good as a lot of the chuck-or-Tuck QBs is RU had that kind of offense. Teel Was Ok. Savage and RU should have done bigger things together but the atrocious OL situation was taxing. RU just doesn't do well at offense as a whole. Good teams are good in the red zone and RU hasn't been really good there since 2006

You can't give Aikman to Oklahoma. That's even worse than giving Wilson to NC State.

I'm less concerned about not producing NFL qbs than not recruiting or developing good qbs for our own team. And that is definitely a weak spot.

Wilson was more NC State than Aikman was OU.

This is why we need to get away from the pro-style offense. We don't have the QBs or dominating OLs (outside of '06) to run it at the level we need to.
