Let's face it . Rutgers needs more than some young , up and coming coordinator. And they won't get the hot mid-level headcoaches like Hermann and Rhule. But Schiano might be available if Julie is replaced. He has charisma and swagger and this program needs it in their football coach especially when competing against the Urban Meyers and Harbaugh's in this division. Schiano is instant credibility. Whether deserved or not , Flood did not get Meyer's and Harbaugh's respect but Schiano would . He has Belichek's respect and I believe is close to Urban Meyer. He turned around the program once , he could do it again. He made excellent in-roads in NJ recruiting , he has previous NFL HC experience, and was an excellent defensive coordinator. Yes he could be difficult and dictatorial but that's what this program needs right now. Discipline , focus, and a commitment to excellence.

Most people aren't realistic. If you gave every RU fan the realistic short list of who our viable coaching candidates would be... I guarantee you after looking at that list, the vast majority would pick Schiano as their selection from that list.

Simply put, he's probably the best candidate who could potentially hit our price point, and who might actually want to come here.

My sentiments exactly. Rutgers is not LSU where the AD was seriously considering replacing Les Miles despite 75% success in the SEC, the #1 recruiting class and and a #2 or #3 ranking as recently as early October . And oodles of money to throw around. We need charismatic proven head coach and he's the best around that would seriously consider Rutgers. Or would he? If not him , then who else?

all things considered, he makes the most sense, I believe he will loosen up where he needs to (lesson learned) and the program needs more discipline and focus as the OP said

Schiano brings instant credibility - and perhaps more importantly, we will have a solid defense. I get all the negatives about him as a gameday coach, stubbornness etc.. -- and he left us in a bad situation in 2011, but we need to move quickly to save a program that is in a potentially horrible downward spiral. Hopefully he can learn from his past mistakes and have a great staff around him to help us get to the levels beyond what he achieved while he was here. I think we would be very fortunate if he comes back - you can call it "settling" for less than what some fans believe we should aspire to - however we are a broken program from top down and badly need a coach with experience, recruiting skills and discipline. He fills all of these areas. Some fans may not like him coming back but I believe a vast majority would be reenergized and would support the move.

Big question is would he even be available by the time Rutgers acts? Would Miami grab him? Would he want to leave Florida? Would he be interested in "going home a second time"? Are second acts ever successful?

Greg was not without his flaws, but he ran a tight ship (which we desperately need), and made us respectable.

He was never going to run the table, but he wasn't going to go 4-8 (let's give him a pass for the LeGrand year) and provide Burt Reynolds (or Adam Sandler, for you young ones) with an entire defensive backfield.

The thing was with Schiano is that you knew we were "the starter wife" and he was constantly looking for a younger, hotter wife

That said, he needs redemption, we need redemption and I'd be thrilled to have him back for a "rental"

He had his taste of NFL head coaching and may be more willing to settle down , especially with Rutgers now in the Big Ten. Much bigger limelight than when he was here. Just think of his matching up against the Meyer's ,Harbaugh's , etc in his division , let alone the entire Big Ten. ESPN would be highlighting him and NJ would be trumpeting his return to his roots.

Any power 5 coordinator or G5 head coach should be in play for a B10 head coaching spot. We are selling ourselves short if we only look at Schiano. If the school is capable of having a normal non agenda driven coaching / AD search is another story.

Isn't that exactly what Schiano was when we first got him?

Schiano and probably Golden are the only coaches who are on the same recruiting level as the rest of the B1G East. Game day coaching is another story.

I think we would have a shot with Rhule is we started looking earlier.

He was but times have changed. He was the best available option then. Now we;'re in the Big Ten and competing against name brand head coaches like Meyer and Harbaugh. We need someone with his instant credibility , charisma and swagger.

He would be a huge upgrade over what we have but don't forget he has never won anything and was not more than a pretty good recruiter

Give me babers or Campbell anyday (yes I know Campbell is off the table).

At least take a shot with them. Maybe you catch lightening in a bottle. If not regroup in 3 years w a lot more money and hire a stud.

I understand giving Schiano and the team a pass for the LeGrand year but even before his injury we lost to Tulane. That's unacceptable.

There's a big difference between a young Schiano in the Big East and having the success while the conference is falling apart and coaching in the Big Ten. I never worried that Greg would run to Penn State to take over after JoePa and I wouldn't worry about him leaving Rutgers if brought back.

He took a shot at the NFL. Maybe he wants another shot, maybe it'll never come. But coaching in the Big Ten is a pretty good level to be at. If he ever wanted to be the JoePa of Rutgers, the Big Ten offers a better opportunity for that than the Big East ever did.

YES, YES, YES 1000 times.
But I don't think there's a chance he's coming back.

If GS comes back he won't leave Rutgers for another college job especially since he didn't leave for another college job when we were in the big east so he sure as hell won't when we are in the B1G. He would kill it in recruiting we would get multiple top 10 players from nj every year, and we would play with an attitude on d that we haven't seen since 2012. Thinking about it more and more I would love for him to come back. For those trying to say you don't want him because he's not a good game day coach. Think about this he got his nfl experience and honestly didn't do half bad. If he had a qb I think he's still in the nfl today. But besides that he's been working with ESPN and dissecting nfl offenses and defenses for a living right now. I he comes back he will be a better coach and a better person for his experiences.

ScarletKnight07 --- Of course we should look. I'd like to think the Administratoin has been doing that for a while. And if they come up with someone that's not a bigger gamble that we can realistically afford, by all means grab him. I just don't see that person out there. And as scandal after potential scandals keep poking their head up, is there a better man to hire to mitigate that?

NorthNJfan --- Is it really better to take a stab in the dark (mixed metaphor?) shooting for the moon, than a pretty solid choice (think we can agree on that). We can always re-tool with both/either in 3-4 years.

RUAlum2011 --- You can cherry pick WTF losses with any coach: Saban/Georgia Southern, Michigan/Appalachian State, and on and on. Maybe Schiano has had more than we'd like. Are you saying Rhule, Campbell, Fuente, Hermann, etc have had none?

It sounds like Schiano detractors (and there are less and less of them all the time) demand perfection from him, or he's NG. But there are warts on ANY coach we're looking at, as well as coaches that wouldn't even give us the time of day.

I just hope the Herman/BArchi meeting was to guage her stance on hiring Schiano and ironing out details of their relationship.

I am missing it. Can somebody please tell me what the issue is with Greg not coming if Julie was the AD?

Is it the Control thing or something else I am just missing?

Somebody told me to mark Wednesday down on my calendar for this week.

Why couldn't he get a job in two seasons?

That is very telling.
perhaps because he was getting paid large for a few years and wanted time to work on himself , refresh, and wait for the right opportunity?

This is precisely why he was gunning for the PSU job.
Yeah??? that's funny because he's been "gunning" for the PSU job for years now but hasn't gotten it. Also they aren't going to cut ties with Franklin yet I think they give him 1 or 2 more years.
