Is Schiano the best possible available candidate for Rutgers HC?

Hey mal, believe the BS if you choose.

If you want to keep your doctor, you can. If you want to keep your health plan, you can....

Besides Bill Snyder at Kansas State has a coach every returned to be HC at a D1 program? How's that one workin' out? [pfftt]

Not the best possible. Possibly the best available. I would feel good about him coming back, even though he had his faults.

Greg was not without his flaws, but he ran a tight ship (which we desperately need), and made us respectable.

He was never going to run the table, but he wasn't going to go 4-8 (let's give him a pass for the LeGrand year) and provide Burt Reynolds (or Adam Sandler, for you young ones) with an entire defensive backfield.

The thing was with Schiano is that you knew we were "the starter wife" and he was constantly looking for a younger, hotter wife

That said, he needs redemption, we need redemption and I'd be thrilled to have him back for a "rental"
I'm not promoting Flood, but to compare GS's coaching record to Flood's going 4-8 this year (playing this schedule) is ridiculous. Greg ran a very tight ship, but.....he also under performed with all of those NFL guys on his roster.

Can recruit NJ effectively? Check
Head coaching experience? Check
NFL coaching experience? Check
Runs clean program? Check
Support from big donors? Check
Understands Rutgers politics? Check
Maintains team discipline? Check

Is he the best possible available candidate? Who knows. Could he turn this dumpster fire around quickly? Absolutely. I doubt he would ever agree to work for Hermann though.

It also took him until 2005 to get the right guys in the program. Not saying that pre 05 shouldn't count buy come on flood was handed a much better program than what schiano took over..... Sadly flood set us back to the pre schiano days

Yea ok

It's dillusiomal to think as a program we are back to Shea days.

Gimme a break

Schiano had his own guys in 2001 (Cubit, et al.)

ScarletKnight07 --- Of course we should look. I'd like to think the Administratoin has been doing that for a while. And if they come up with someone that's not a bigger gamble that we can realistically afford, by all means grab him. I just don't see that person out there. And as scandal after potential scandals keep poking their head up, is there a better man to hire to mitigate that?

NorthNJfan --- Is it really better to take a stab in the dark (mixed metaphor?) shooting for the moon, than a pretty solid choice (think we can agree on that). We can always re-tool with both/either in 3-4 years.

RUAlum2011 --- You can cherry pick WTF losses with any coach: Saban/Georgia Southern, Michigan/Appalachian State, and on and on. Maybe Schiano has had more than we'd like. Are you saying Rhule, Campbell, Fuente, Hermann, etc have had none?

It sounds like Schiano detractors (and there are less and less of them all the time) demand perfection from him, or he's NG. But there are warts on ANY coach we're looking at, as well as coaches that wouldn't even give us the time of day.

I just hope the Herman/BArchi meeting was to guage her stance on hiring Schiano and ironing out details of their relationship.

I just think Schiano's ceiling in the B1G east would be battling out with Penn State for 4th. I don't see him matching wits with Meyer (no one else really can) or Dantonio or Harbaugh (him and Harbaugh might have epic awkward confrontations when Schiano makes our dline dive into their victory formation). Maybe we beat a Mich Mich State for a game but will prob have a wtf loss or losses against some of the teams that run the spread. If Schiano was able to put together a legit coaching staff and give full autonomy to an offensive coordinator then fine (TCU Oklahoma model from this year). All the frustrations we have with Flood's gameday coaching would still be there with Schiano. I think to ultimately be in the upper tier of the B1G either a Dan Mullen would have to really want to come back to NJ/Philly Area for some reason or we would have to go contrarian to the league and find a offense guru to run the show that leverages and coaches up our recruiting base. If the proper leadership was in place then maybe we could have a normal coaching search where risks and rewards could be properly measured and a wider cast of candidates could be evaluated. If we took off our scarlet colored glasses and blinders there are a bunch of qualified non P5 coaches that would throw their hat in the ring for a B1G job.

Dan Mullen - pipedream but his name was mentioned in the past connected with the job.

Dino Babers - proven his system/offense works at Eastern Illinois and now Bowling Green. Coached up Jimmy Garappolo and now Matt Johnson.

Jeff Brohm - his system / offense has worked at WKU. Aggressive/fun offense to watch.

Willie Fritz - different style. run option more like Oregon but defensive oriented clock control. More of a transition time to goto a run spread since we dont have a running qb but we do have 30 running backs. This system is probably better suited for our recruiting base since it doesnt rely on a prostyle qb. Two time national FCS coach of the year and Sun Belt coach of the year last year.

Scott Frost - no head coaching experience but if we were able to clone the Oregon model I think it would work here. They plugged in a FCS 5th year qb into their offense and havent missed a beat (when Veron Adams has been healthy).

Bob Stitt - Montana head coach. Spread offense guru. All the top spread coaches in FBS have either stolen his plays or have had him design plays for them. He probably has another year at Montana before a P5 school adds him as OC or a G5 school makes him their coach. This would be the equivalent of trying to get a Gus Malzahn or Hugh Freeze early.

Then there are all the other P5 coordinators. Venables, Aranda, Meacham, Smart, Cristobal.

I think we are past the point of needing a ra ra hey look everyone we have a football team program builder. An actual legit gameday coach that gets the best out of their players (lower level recruits) and that runs a fun to watch product is what is needed. Our fans should be enjoying the canon firing 6 or 7 times a game not nervously watching the clock bleed out when we get the lead in the 2nd quarter.

Salary for current coach. ? Cheap by Big Ten standards . Just what Rutgers wants.. Interest in true athletic success by the administration? Low by any standard.
Level of respect and admiration by Jersey athletes and coaches and that part of our population not alumnus of RU? Almost non existent. .Perception by the rest of the national media in regards to our revenue sports programs.?:smiley: We are facing dilemmas wrapped up in conundrums on many levels. We are one of the few programs that cannot recruit beyond our contiguous neighbors, and of course Florida, but who doesn't recruit Florida? We had our chance in the mid 70's, in pigskin AND hoops, and what happened? We had our chance after Ray Rice was dropped into our laps by 'Cuse and what happened? New Jersey has always been the butt of jokes in this country and we keep trying to escape that image but somehow always drive ourselves back to it and Rutgers has been a major part of this regression.. I went to one game this year. I used to plan a trip every year when I lived in San Diego so I would get to watch 2 home games. .I was a fanatic damn it. Now I have found other things to do with my Saturdays.. We are way over our heads and when I drop in here to see what all of you mavens have to say it sickens me even more. What is the answer guys? Do we bring back a guy who many of us did not care for in spite of his success.? Is there a Phil Knight or a T Boone Pickens out there from Nutley or Newark to rescue us from ourselves? I don't think so. Substance abusers have to hit bottom before they can get well. Are we ever going to hit bottom once and for all? I am not looking for a national championship, although that would be sweet indeed. I am just looking for us to get up and stay up for once. .Yes I know we have been in bowls most of this century. .Now we are in the :flush: again and it stinks.. I am obviously not part of the solution and I apologize for that but where do we go from here?

One really cool thing about Schiano coming back would be that he actually gets to still coach his last recruiting class.

You watch, he'll turn redshirt seniors Hamilton, Longa, Agudosi, Denman, Nelson, Muller, Lambert, and Pinnix-Odrick into NFL talent. All guys from 2012 class that Schiano recruited.

As another added benefit, a number of coaches may get to keep their jobs because they have a good relationship with Schiano. Less buy outs, and Schiano-tree coaches were some of our better ones (except you know who). Then he can really strengthen the weak links.

Schiano started as a young coach who was unwilling to admit he needed help on offense. He finally got to the point where he was secure enough to bring in an OC that knew what he was doing (Cignetti). Then the NFL called. I'd like to think that if Schiano came back, he'd turn the offense over to a smart OC.

I don't think Schiano is the best choice, but he may be the choice that RU decides to make since he's a guy they can trust from the running the program standpoint. This assumes the stuff in the report is true.

Graystork is right - he really had great NFL talent that he held back w his own style of the PSU offense model - he started to change his ways and I think he left one year too early - the 2012 team could have been really special. Anyhow we dont even know if GS is interested.

This!! Greg got to caught up with th spread and tried to impliment that for a couple of years but didn't have the personnel for that. 2011 was a promising year but we had a freshman qb in nova and a limited one in Dodd. Too this day there is no doubt in my mind that we would have won the conference in 2012 has schiano stayed. But hell what do you expect when your a Rutgers fan lol we just gotta keep pushing forward and hope the next guy we hire is the right one.

can he hold both jobs because he demands complete control
If Greg comes back I gotta think he learned enough in the nfl to know that you can't do both. Hell even belicheck has a dc. If he comes back I would like to think he would hire a dc who has the same tendencies and philosophy as he does.

Wild speculation--Greg Brown is appointed interim AD to open discussions with Schiano as possible future head coach. We can only hope.

Greg is by far my top choice. If you read the piece about what he's been doing in his years off, it's pretty clear he's learned a ton from his NFL tenure and has realized what he'd need to do next time, a la Pete Carroll. He has fewer question marks than anyone else we could hire and would by far be the strongest at hitting the ground running in recruiting.
