Jack Whitman

back on the market, big man grad transfer from William and Mary, committed to Kansas back in May, and just left Kansas last week...could be the big man last roster piece we are waiting on. Just a guess. Would be a great addition

If you're going to start a thread based off of my guess.... you have to provide the other outside context for the group. This is a complete shot in the dark and not based off of any rumor I have heard - just posturing about available bigs on the market that would be able to step in and make an immediate impact at the 5...

are there lists of other viable Graduate Transfers still seeking a landing spot ?

- any other conceivable & fully eligible players who could (within the next 40-45 days) announce that they will play basketball for Rutgers for the 2017-2018 season ?

I have no idea if this is true or not, but, Jack Whitman was the type of mobile Big Man that I wanted Rutgers to try and get as a 5th Year Grad Transfer. He can play Center and back up Freeman at PF. Possibly a 8-10 or more PPG scorer. Gives a team some flexibility up front to go along with Sa.

He is a player. I love his mobility and crafty moves around the basket.

Excerpt from the above link about Whitman:

  • PF Jack Whitman - Whitman had a tremendous junior season at William & Mary, almost tripling his scoring from 3.3 points to 10.1 points a game. He didn’t do it at the cost of efficiency either, as he actually brought his field goal percentage up to 66% on more than twice the shots. He also doubled his rebounding, averaging 5.4 boards a night. He’s drawn some attention from coaches since he announced he’d transfer, and Goodman reported that he’ll spend his final season with the Kansas Jayhawks.

The program was never said to be on his trail, were they?

Found this dated May 18...it's a start. Not sure how complete...

We are all just speculating and stating that this would be a great pickup. Nothing wrong with that....especially on a message board.

I saw you guys say you were speculating. I was just wondering if there was any hint he would come here anywhere.

Understood & agreed. It was my speculation and guess haha. Just want to make sure everyone knows there is no inside information or any hint of RU being involved with this guy, thats all. Not trying to start any false rumors.

I did not take your OP as anything but wishful thinking. If possible, I want this guy. I think he is a mobile stud. His footwork outside and near the basket is top notch for a Big Man. AND....he finishes with Skill or Power.

Well let's hope the person with inside info of good news coming to benefit us this season was referring to this guy. That's what I'm going with until I hear otherwise. Come on down Jack!

here's another resource - not sure about how current
http://www.verbalcommits.com/transfers/2017
http://www.verbalcommits.com/transfers/2017

if you do a sort for all "eligible to play immediately" - all not already pledged to another school (although this does not seem binding)
and if you remove all under 6' 6" and all PG & SG - this is what you get - (maybe - could have missed something)
seems that decisions are not exactly final Hawkins was supposedly headed to BC - but now not ... Whitman was going to Kansas - so this could mean that any of those other 'decisions' could also be subject to change - grad transfers - really = wild west & subject to revision prior to the final bell.

SF - Keion Alexander - - - -RS SR 6/9 - 210 Morehead State
SF - Jake Coddington - - - RS SR 6/6 - 212 Ole Miss
SF - Davon 'Chuck' Ester - RS SR 6/7 - 218 Chattanooga
C - Cole Harrison - - - - - RS SR 6/11 - 245 Dartmouth
PF - Deontae Hawkins - - -RS SR 6/8 - 220 Illinois State
PF - Marko Pirović - - - - - -RS SR 6/7 - 205 Maine
SF - Marquis Salmon - - - RS SR 6/8 - 210 Wagner
PF - Jack Whitman - - - - - RS SR 6/9 - 235 William & Mary

somehow I don't believe that this is the entire universe of the pool of possible final additions

No offense meant...But how can anyone be sure of that?

Coach has said many times that he does not want to go grad transfer as it really doesn't improve the program beyond 1 season

Other than having to use the scholarship for another transfer player sitting out this season, is there any other scenario taking on a grad transfer for the year would affect the future?

I could definitely be missing something but other than a last second reclassification or transfer redshirt using the 'ship doesn't it make sense to get another body?

Could be Deontea Hawkins from IS. Just decommitted from BC. Averaged 14 points, 7 rebounds a game. I know Young has an eye on New England events, and Pitt was interested as well.Knight could have looked into that.

Yeah I don't want to speculate on any particular player, just more curious than anything. Wouldn't want to bring in a player that negatively affects the program culture the staff is trying to build, but bodies never hurt. All depends on which guys already on the roster you want to gain valuable game experience rather than just practice experience.

I hear you. Not into doing it either, just throwing out names. Drunk driving is pretty serious. He is a great player. I know Pikiell is big on character, so he is probably out.

Watching Freeman at the five in crunch time is going to get old real quick in the B1G. He has already missed a whole season due to injury. What if he goes down again? We need a player like the above mentioned right now. Thanks. $$$$

Maybe the players on roster who have improved deserve the minutes?

Deserve ? Who cares about deserve ? If Senior Jack Whitman is better and can help win more games than Senior Candida Sa or Junior Doorson, I'll take Whitman and open up a spot for 2018.

This is competition - Best player plays. As Steve Pikiell said last year, " I play the best and I'm fair to the rest" !!!!

If Whitman was an option then sure you take him...The problem is there is no indication that a player anywhere this good is available. If the choice is marginal grad transfer vs what I believe will happen with the last spot, there's no benefit to adding a player that is not part of Years 3-5...

The trail of hints is certainly all over the place....

-this person will be an immediate help in 2017
-this person is a big enough name to fit into the starting lineup immediately
-this person is not a grad transfer
-this person is a big man that is the position most sought after right now
-this person will be official in a matter of two weeks

I cannot imagine a player available right now that fits all of this criteria and it not being revealed by now.

Detective Seels, great work. This calls for a raise, or a dollar hot dog.

I named the player we are getting in the Doorson thread

Given the clues, if not Whitman, the Decoure reclassify is only thing that makes sense. An out of country player or judo also makes sense, but 99% of us would have never heard of

It is possible to have played pro baseball - then college basketball - so how many years of Basketball eligibility would he have left?

Are we restricting our search to American soil?

The search continues. I know Pikiell had some euro skills at Stony Brook. Also, Shoes with Africa. Who knows at this point. It will be an intriguing development.

We spent time demystifying Doucoure reclassifying. But BK saying both sides are working on something makes it seem like it could be a possibility now perhaps.Still doubtful as most of us said that he was definitely not going to be an option. So intriguing.

Gotta be either a foreign player or JUCO.
