Junk Time or Not, Rettig is Clearly the Better QB

Whether Rettig should start or not, one has to scratch one's head why up to this point Rettig never got into ANY game besides Norfolk St.? If the so-called competition was really that close, there was absolutely NO EXCUSE by Flood to not play Rettig a series or two in every game.

We have a lifer position coach making HC decisions and we know why we are seeing these kinds of results. And those results are eye-popping. Since 2012, Flood has a 2-20 record against teams with a winning record. Enough said.

And there are many who even question whether this lifer position coach can do that job adequately.

I think we now know why Flood never wanted us to see Rettig on the field. The difference is remarkable. Some here may love Flood, I think he put his pride over the best team he could put on the field. He didn't want people to question his judgement... I imagine he will be asked a few questions now.

That's why he put him in tonight right? To hide it? You guys are serious clowns. One TD in a beat down and the kid is once again Jesus Christ Peyton Manning Dan Marino and John elway rolled into one.

No one is calling him a hall of fame QB Il. What is painfully obvious is that he has a better arm. No reasonable person who has even an elementary understanding of athletic ability would attempt to dispute that.

Further, every time the kid has been in he performed well enough to, at a minimum, get more opportunity. That's all anyone is asking for. Put the kid in with Carroo for a real stretch at a time when it means something and let's find out how he performs. He has earned that much.

A few of you seem hysterical with Laviano. Almost like its personal. Maybe it is?

If Laviano has one cousin on this board than Rettig has 100 mommies.

It's not hard to explain.

I hate mass hysterical obsessions with nonsense fantasies based on little to no proof. It is borderline infuriating to see some of the twits on this board start doing the exact opposite of what they do for every HR pass compared to every CL pass. I hate sitting around morons every Saturday who stick around to heckle 19 year olds.

I hate idiots. Andni get frustrated. HR obsession is a prime example of such pet peeves of mine. So I can't help but point out the nonsense and go against the grain.

If we have learned anything during the Flood regime it is that decision making (both on field and off) is not his forte.

It is about fairness, observing mechanics, release time, arm strength, and coaching stubbornness. I rooted for Lav to get more time last year. Oh yeah, one more thing, the best chance to win!

Wonder what Flood will ponder as he lay awake tonight ...
let's see ... the announcers marveling at Rettig's arm strength - must be delusional
the pass to Carlton Agudosi was pure luck
the touchdown pass was against the third string so, disregard the result ...
also a nice pass on a in call pass interference ... Any penalties by OSU?

Rettig should get some decent garbage time reps in the second half of the next two weeks.

The difference in arm strngth is beyond obvious. We have nothing to lose by letting him start next week

Rettig is the better QB. Period. Was before the start of the season. Arm strength, poise, being able to see the field better. Maybe the Laviano lovers and Flood saw something I didn't but I thought in Game 1 it was obvious. One person I spoke with stated that the Flood likes Laviano's scrambling ability. Really? Seven games in and I haven't seen it. Probably just me.

Against a team like Ohio, you need a guy that can sling the ball around and fit it into tight windows. Laviano cannot do that and could not move the offense. Rettig can do that much better and it's painfully obvious every time he's played this year.

When the score got to 28-0 it was obvious that the game for all intensive purposes was over from Rutgers being able to compete. You are playing with house money anyway . They should have put in Rettig then and let him loose. Absolutely nothing to lose at that point. Sort of like going for it on 4th and 2 from the 40. Oh wait?

See the pattern anyone?

Two overshots and a TD against third-stringers. Hand him the Heisman.
Their third stringers (not even sure if they were third stringers, perhaps second), were playing hungry and attacking, and would start on many teams.

The issue is that Laviano is the wrong QB for this system.

The pro set is only successful when you can stretch the field with deep shots off of play action on 1st down and 2nd and manageable. You also need to have a good feel for the TE. Laviano has that, but no ability to stretch the field consistently.

Laviano's skill set is much closer to the prototype West Coast QB than the pro set.

If you're married to this offense, Rettig has to be the QB going forward.

That said, Rettig's accuracy was not very good. I'm willing to chalk it up to adrenaline. But if we're being honest, he sailed at least 3 balls. But he does throw darts and can make throws that Laviano isn't even willing to attempt.

You obviously understand football and what you see out if these two kids. Haven't seen enough of Rettig but I agree that accuracy may be the issue that has given the staff pause. Also I wonder about his pocket awareness.....nonetheless, I am intrigued and want to see the kid in there and what he can do in this offense going forward.

Thank you for being reasonable in at least getting Rettig minutes to see how our team performs when he's under center.

Clear as day he blew it.

Laviano is a decent backup or a good starter at Wagner.

Rettig is a legitimate B1G QB and RU would have beaten WSU and possibly MSU if he were our QB.
I'm pro rettig but i disagree... we dont know what the W-L would be...but sure as hell we'd be a better team for letting Rettig have his ups and downs. He should start the rest of the season, period. If he doesnt play more this season Flood is the dumbest coach on the planet.

He will transfer if he doesn't get the starting nod in one of the next two games
and if i were the kid, i would transfer too. If this flood loses this kid, it will be be another blow to the program.

How can anybody have faith in flood? The man running the program, recruiting, scouting can't even play the better QB. What can he do?

Was at the game last night. Rettig once again looked great in warm ups. Laviano once again looked serviceable but does not have the arm strength of the others. In game Laviano looked uncomfortable and didn't get his feet underneath him. Was playing on roller skates even when he didn't have anyone in his face. I think he would benefit from watching from the sidelines. When you have Chris Fowler and Herbstreit talking about the arm strength difference and touch difference you would think someone would listen. Both mentioned the differential in both the game and warm ups.

It's absurd that this staff tries to justify playing Laviano over Rettig when everyone else knows Rettig is much better.

And who's fault is that?

Why are these administrators in place and why do you alumni not contribute more to your school?

It's not just the alums. The state woefully invests very little in total to RU compared to peers. That is another discussion.

But to answer your question, Barchi is there to focus on the med school merger. Julie is there to keep the seat warm, see what she can do to raise funds (she is doing ok here as donations are up) while focusing on becoming revenue neutral. It's not a winning formula to compete with schools like OSU. Schools like that and USC and a few others just want to win. Everything they do is with that in mind. Everything.

At RU, you hear about many other things before you hear about winning big. We are what we are, a middling type B1G program that will fight for bowl eligibility and perhaps catch lightening in a bottle every 10-15 years. No different than half the league.

It is what is for the foreseeable future. Enjoy it when you can is my advice.
