Kara Lawson named NBA coach

Congrats to Kara who has been named assistant coach with the Boston Celtics. Wonder if she will be the 1st head coach in a few years. Wonder if the late Pat Summit is smiling from up above.

Greg Popovich has been grooming Becky Hammon for a while to take over for him, so my guess is that she's more likely than Lawson to be the first woman head coach in the NBA. That said, I'd still give her less than a 50-50 shot.

No coaching experience, but I don't think that is a factor. She knows a lot about basketball, played at the highest level (WNBA and Team USA), has been involved in the NBA as a commentator for several years now, and can be a contributor I'm sure. Hammon didn't have any coaching experience, either, and she is now high enough on Pop's staff to sit in the front row.

Since she is, as the article notes, the 4th such hire (and, I think there are others that are not coaches, but are still in player development roles and such) I don't think it is likely to be a publicity stunt. The key for her to have success is to have respect from the players.

She has limited coaching experience - in at least 3x3 for USA basketball.

But I agree that she was hired for her acumen rather than coaching experience, or at least, I suspect that.
