Just saw a story referring to a tweet from Darren Rovell that Phil Knight is willing to throw 10M/yr at a new coach for Oregon. He's 78 and wants a title.
I knew Knight would control Helfrich's fate, didn't know he was willing to go that far. The number certainly has the shock value but who out there is really worth that much. It's like Charlie Strong at Texas making 5M, I was questioning if he was worth the 3M bump (when that was considered premium) Louisville gave him after his Sugar Bowl victory because I wanted to see "life after Teddy" before handing out the big bucks.
Saban would be worth it but he's not leaving Alabama. Urban isn't leaving OSU. Harbaugh isn't leaving Michigan but I do think maybe seeing how quickly a good coach like Harbaugh can turn things, in addition to his age, might be fueling Knight's desire to throw around the big bucks.
A return of Chip Kelly, now that would be something and I think he'd be worth the gamble/money. Get him a top level DC like Aranda maybe and I think that would work. Who else? Bob Stoops? He's a superb coach but is he a guarantee at instant contender? Maybe if you throw in some more dough to reunite him with Venables from Clemson. Many coaches will take that money obviously but how many will get you to that instant title contender spot. Not a lot out there. I'm not as familiar with NFL coaches out there.
