Knox father arrested at state tourney match

By NJSIAA rules, “any player that leaves the bench area during an altercation, regardless of whether the player engages in the altercation, shall be disqualified,” meaning any wrestler identified in the brawl would be DQ’d for the rest of the season.

That rule applies to leaving the bench to get involved in an altercation on the playing surface, most typically in basketball and hockey. It also doesn’t necessarily mean he’d be DQ’d for the season. Usually in sports there’s a number of DQ’s you’re allowed on the season as an individual/team before there are postseason penalties.

Additionally at district tournaments, the “bench area” is typically in the bleachers which is where the fight occurred. The fight also spilled onto the mat so there’s really nowhere safe for anyone to go. I’m not sure if Anthony got involved in the brawl but I highly doubt the NJSIAA is going to make him ineligible moving forward unless they find evidence that he participated in the fight. Even then it might be a stretch.

Looks like Anthony Sr. moves up many spots on the all time list of disliked, NJ, wrestling dads.

He was involved. He can be suspended for one match meaning he can't weigh in for Regions. The family most likely appeals the decision and gets a court date in April.

Depends on when the state makes that ruling. If they issued the ruling this morning for example, Vianney could easily scramble and schedule a “varsity” match tonight if they haven’t wrestled the max dates yet. Coach would likely call his closest friend in the shore. They’d wrestle a JV lineup, technically Knox would have sat out one match, and they’d circumvent the ruling. I’ve seen it done in other sports.

I don’t expect the state to suspend him but if they did, the appeals process probably drags it out like you mention.

I still haven't seen much video or understood exactly what happened. Unless Anthony Jr. did something horrible, I'm kind of glad he will get to pursue his fourth title. I don't know him, his team, or his family in any way, just a general feeling...

Sounds like they are still reviewing and he may have to forfeit a match at regions?

Supposedly he’s not the only sjv kid in danger

Knox, 150lb and 120lb

Sounds like the kid's actions resulted in his disqualification.
Yea the state has videos of him throwing punches in the brawl…wonder if Cornell has is going to have an issue with this , wrestling is low priority and he’s getting suspended from school and wrestling for this incident plus this is national news , sports illustrated has an article about it . Could they pull his scholarship?

Low priority? They have a whole Ag school which accepts wrestlers knowing they have no interest in pursuing a career in Agriculture or Livestock. They know they're there for one purpose, wrestling. Remember not everyone "really" gets into Cornell rather they slide in through the backdoor.

Wrong. He’s a kid. 100% on his father. No kid/young adult is not going into a melee to back up his dad.
18 or 19 yr old? He's an adult. Backing up a dad should mean, at the very most, dragging the dad away. Throwing punches is uncalled for and charges can be filed against him. And it's not 100% on the father. Had the father been the only one involved, Jr. would still be in the hunt for a 4th title.

I get what you are saying but at the end of the day the people who make the big decisions like this one don’t care about sports in general nevermind wrestling , they care about image and the prestige of being an Ivy League school …honestly I hope it doesn’t mess up future plans for him but since the day 1 I’ve openly hoped and campaigned for him to go to Rutgers so who knows if Cornell doesn’t work out maybe you guys can swoop in and get your next ashnault

Also this isn’t his first incident, apparently he got into a fist fight in the hallway at escape the rock

How Cornell handles this will certainly be interesting. If charges are eventually brought against Jr., maybe that changes how Cornell views this situation. Uncontrollable dad, plus son who flies of the handle, plus possible simple assault charges? Cornell has some thinking to do. If it were a depth wrestler, bye bye. #1 ranked wrestler will have some leeway but how much?

If his dad could sit and watch the match like everyone else in there, like I’ve done for 17 years watching my 4 boys wrestle. His son wouldn’t have charged the stands and got arrested. For 20+ years we see stupid parents who can’t just watch the sport attack kids, refs, coaches and fans. It’s on his dad’s poor decision. Legally, yes Hr has got legal problems. But this is his dad’s fault. Everyone that knows him is telling him the same. I’m sure.

Wrong. He's 18, isn't he? That's the age at which people are held legally responsible for their actions. He should have had the sense to not engage. I don't like hearing that he can't wrestle, but the decision to disqualify recognizes the individual's responsibility for his own actions. Harsh lesson.

Oh I totally agree with suspension. But his dad was the problem here.

The NJ Wrestling Facebook page is already devolving into the usual "Boys will be Boys" vs. "Rules are Rules" debate...

After the way the njsiaa has come down hard on football and boys and girls basketballs for brawls and the multiple videos of Knox clearly running up into the crowd and throwing punches they really had no choice but to suspend him ..he’s caught dead to rights in like 4 different videos , even sports illustrated had an article about its national news now
