I thought if the team went up by 10 before half, which we could have, we might have had a chance. Even when we were up, the score was stale. Why? Great defense by our team. Still, two guards hurt the team in the last two minutes before half. I do think in some sense that they have to be kept on a shorter leash. The leash has been too long for the past couple of games. Heck, what do I know though?Easy to observe, hard to coach.
Offensively, no bueno. Reasons?Lob passes around the perimeter, no pep to them. Passes have to be much, much quicker to get the ball to a player who beats his defender. Players were running in the first half, but passing would not help them get the spot they need.
Pick and roll with Gettys is pointless because it pulls him out of position, and pick and pop/roll, not working.
Sa pick and roll, he is not sure how to roll into space.
What would you do on offense?
I would keep the pick and rolls at the top out for now, because they clog the spacing, and are not working. Also, put players in poor position to rebound.
Brings me to the next point, transition offense might be our better shot at quick baskets. I would tell Corey,Johnson, Williams to watch their defender, and if the defender boards, go make a quick slip out into the middle of the floor and Freeman/Gettys/Sa/ all look for them. Should be an easier basket.
Then team had great defensive intensity, Pikeill is active coaching. I think the team got lazy, got scared, and went to terrible habits. Not surprised, as this is still new basketball. Get the passes quicker, and the team will have a better shot. The leash needs to be pulled in on our guards.
My friend said to me "do you think we have a shot to win?" I said sure, we are up, better than being down, so I feel more confident. The team looked uncomfortable with a lead, and did not know how to expand it. It is all new, and I am realistic.
Weird game, weird time, weird team.
