Montville junior Leah Wis got the news while out shopping. She hung up the phone with her father, Bob Wis, and started jumping up and down and screaming.
"I've been looking forward to this a lot," said Wis, a future heptathlete who was part of the Mustangs' 4x100 at Penn Relays last spring. "Freshman year, I might have had a mark that was good enough, and we tried to put it in, but I didn't get accepted. The second I didn't get accepted, my heart was set on getting in. It was a goal. Last year, when I didn't get accepted again, it drove me to throw something good enough that would get me accepted this time."

Cool. I threw discus in high school. Track is a quiet sport in my county (aside from Mary Cain years at Bronxville) but it was a lot of fun.

Congratulations to her, V! Really great.

I'm an old discus thrower myself. NZ masters champion for geezers! It's a really beautiful sport.

Best of luck to her! Penn Relays! What a great sporting event. Used to go watch when I was in college (Marty Liquori days at Villanova). Never threw well enough to get anywhere near the Penn Relays. Hell, I threw farther three years ago (at age 61) than I ever did in HS or college (smaller disc).

I believe it is the purest form of sport. How fast can you run? Can you jump high or far? How far can you throw this oblect? People have been doing this stuff for thousands of years. Awesome to know you were a NZ discus masters champ. Here in NJ we have guys jumping and throwing in their 80's.

For the longest time my sister could not decide whether she was a thrower who also did the jumping/hurdling events well...or a jumper who did well in the throwing events and hurdles. Eventually she figured that she is none of those. Just a heptathlete. Too bad the women do not do the decathlon, she would be awesome.

Good luck to her!! Way to represent Morris county!! I ran for Morris Catholic when they were good (qualified to run in the boys mile at Penn) as well as RU. Hopefully you are going to watch, if you have never been to Penn, it is quite a scene, especially if the weather is nice. To see that many people sitting and enjoying the beauty of track for 8 hours each day is pretty cool and then they do it for 2 more days. I was lucky enough to compete in the Corporate Distance Medley a couple years ago, its the last event on Friday, 30 years after my first trip and there were still plenty of people left in the stands cheering us on.

NJ produces some of the top talent every year in HS track, hopefully she continues to improve and heads to RU, we could use some good heptathletes.

Your lips to God's ears. She loves Coach Robinson and feels like she is at home at Rutgers but several of the Ivy's have made her a priority and it is hard to resist the best schools in the world.

It will be interesting to see where Sydney Mclaughlin from Union Catholic ends up. She is only a sophomore but already one of the top runners in the country breaking all kinds of national and age group records. Last year her 400 meter hurdle time she ran as a freshman, 55.63 would have put her in the top 3 at the NCAA div 1 championships. She is faster over hurdles than 99.% of all HS girls running without hurdles. Her brother ran 46+ seconds in the open 400 last year as a junior, I believe he is heading to Michigan next year.

These are the types of runners NJ produces every year, we need to keep some of them home.

Still have family in Belleville, my dad still claims it is the center of the universe.

I was reading about a NJ girl who was recruting to Penn. She was a straight A student, and top runner but her first year was a lot more stressful than the she anticipated (due to multiple daily practices and competitive courses). One day she just jumped off a building (4 other Penn students did same thing in 6 months). People thought she would have been better fit at Lehigh but she was caught up with the Penn reputation. Clearly this girl had other issues but its also clear she should have gone somewhere else

Dude was it really necessary to suggest that his sister won't handle the courseload at an Ivy?

No - that's why I didn't. For all I know she might thrive. Just saying that with regard to reputational schools "hard to resist" some reality checks are always in order - maybe Penn especially since suicides (including a track star with a 3.5) there are being "probed" (like Cornell or NYU were clusters have manifested). Its like West Point, just because a football playerd gets offered doesn't mean its agreat idea to go. A lot of grads will tell you "its a great place to be from but misery to be at".

While I was on the mens team, Coach James was an assistant, but he was well loved by his athletes. He truly seemed to care for them and had a great relationship with them.
