True, but better to start the contract clock earlier. By the time he was drafted, the rookie salary scale had changed, so while there was a difference between first and third round money, it's not what it was 5 years earlier.

True, but not as much for draftees after the new CBA was signed several years ago. Now NFL players know that their 2nd contract is likely to be their big contract and not their 1st.

Outside of top guys this has always been the case. First contract makes you comfortable...second makes you wealthy.
 
Why would staying another year make him a first rounder? He had a very good junior year. He just did not have the elite measurables to get him in the first round.

He may have developed into a first round pick. Not sure but staying an extra year may have given him the chance to further develop and get picked higher. But he may have just been a third round pick still.
