During the past few weeks Flood must be in disbelief.
In any other serious program he would have been fired for both performance and off the field antics.
Not at Rutgers.
In fact, Flood publicly proclaims he has the support of the administration.
That is probably partially true.
The reason being is the factions that claim to run this show.
I am sure our friend Mr. Television has gotten his info from contacts within the hierarchy of this bumbling administration.
However, if you ask another member of this elite faction you get a totally different perspective.
There is derision within the leadership and that is the problem.
Julie is doing her best but her hands are tied.
Barchi is apathetic and the BOG's are directionless.
I hear from some that there is no money and from others the money is there.
At this point, although many here will disagree, I truly hope Greg Brown can influence the powers that be
to persuade Schiano to come back to Rutgers.
With our current resources we are not hiring the "big name".
If we have any chance of bringing him back it is our best hope in moving this program forward.
Otherwise, Flood gets the last laugh remaining in a position where he would have been fired any place else.

Not helpful to laugh while you are in negotiations and are on the outs. Wink. Wink.

"In any other serious program he would have been fired for both performance and off the field antics."

Not necessarily .... Consider long time B1G member Purdue - -
doing well?- no ...... serious program ?- yeah

Purdue football coach Darrell Hazell will return in 2016
2013 Purdue 1–11 - - - 0–8 6th (Leaders)
2014 Purdue 3–9 - - - 1–7 7th (West)
2015 Purdue 2–9 - - -

- OK not aware any off-field issues but, Hazell's on field performance record is quite arguably completely abysmal

The whole Flood mess is far from cut & dried -

Flood's on-field performance may be worthy of various severe screaming criticism - but on the pure total W-L record alone, it is not a situation that blatantly screams out for termination ... make 3 bowl games, miss one - get fired? ... the serious performances issues are rooted more in the specifics of poor decision making, lost opportunities, inability to assemble incrementally better recruiting classes and absence of a real vision.

Flood's off-field performance certainly was worthy of far, far more termination consideration - but those waters have been seriously muddied by the 3-game termination - which has essentially been positioned as Flood's 'punishment' and as such, pretty much the conclusion of the matter.

So you consider Purdue a serious football program?

So you consider Purdue a serious football program?

As along as you want to consider Rutgers as aspiring to be a competitive member of the B1G,
you pretty much have to consider all of the members of the B1G (even the ones in an extended dismal period) as serious programs. They bring in a full complement of full-scholarship players, they have a long history with various bright points.

Couldn't give a rat's hairy ass about ANY other program's situation. Sorry.

That is really quite a picture. Looks like he is just trying to push that pouty guy out of the way as he heads towards his post game interviews.

Point taken.

Having spent more than half of my life in SEC and ACC country, I believe that, for the most part, "serious football programs" are only concerned with winning and would therefore overlook Flood's off the field infractions, along with all the player arrests, home invasions, suspensions and the like if Flood was winning football games on a consistent basis.

However, big time football schools might use those off the field issues to help justify firing a coach who is performing poorly.

Here at Rutgers, we apparently overlook all of those off the field problems in an effort to justify keeping a losing coach who has proven, even to the untrained observer, that he cannot coach.

Weird.

No serious program would fire him for his off the field antics. All they care about is winning. If he was doing that, there would be no questions.

99.9% of our fan base would be saying how awesome Flood and how badly he wants to help his kids if right now if he was sitting at 11-1. The off field stuff is a smokescreen for those here who want him canned, when really, he should just be let because he simply isn't a good football coach.

One positive in this whole mess. It looks like Julie fixed the "anonymous source familiar with the situation" leak earlier this year.

Yes. Two rose bowl appearances. 1-1 in those games.

What New Year's Day game was Rutgers in prior to Flood?

Columbia, Harvard, Washington and Jefferson and Navy have also appeared in the Rose Bowl ... doesn't make them serious football programs.

By the way, I did not claim Rutgers is or was a "serious football program." So I do not get your point.

Purdue's last Rose bowl appearance was in this century (2001) coupled with two other New Year day bowl appearances in the 2000s. Hard to compare them to other programs mentioned that had success in the late 1800s / Early 1900s

I just answered the question - 'Do I consider Purdue a serious football program'.

I understand. However, you suggested Purdue is a serious football program because they have recently appeared in the Rose Bowl and 2 other New Years Day bowls, winning one of those bowl games. That is why I mentioned other teams that have also appeared in the Rose Bowl, yet are not generally considered serious football programs.

Despite Purdue's 1 and 2 record in recent New Years Day Bowls, a closer look at Purdue's recent football history does not lead me to consider them a serious football program. According to my quick research, from 1982-Present, Purdue's football team has achieved a record of 169 Wins, 226 Loses and 5 Ties. So I do not consider them a "serious football school."
