Losing hope

They need an identity on offense. It’s tough with an interim coordinator, but they need to figure it out this offseason.

Things can fall into place quickly when you know what you want to do and how you want to do it.

All year it’s looked like we’re just feeling around game by game for something that will work.

Here's the reality folks:

You're in the B1G conference now; a damn tough league with the likes of some great football teams and only going to get tougher when USC and UCLA join. In a really good year, you might hope to be the 10th best team. Give Schiano a truth serum, and he'd likely tell you the same thing.

Schiano is as good as Rutgers can hope for and he's a very good HC. However, his return this time around doesn't place him in the same inferior conference he was before.

Not trying to be harsh, just stating reality.

Stop with the hyperbole. The program is a more experienced/competent QB away from being half decent. You saw it in the first half. D would have played much better in the 2nd half if we hadn't had 3 picks and given up short fields, and if the O sustained some drives. Need some other players too obviously, but the first half should've told you something. This wasn't an Ash-led down 21 its. in the 1st Q type of loss. The 3rd Q was pretty horrific though.

You forgot the fact that the B1G doesn’t want us to be good by handcuffing us with less money.

Serious question, how would More B1G $$ help recruiting?

More money from the get go would have allowed us to get rid of Ash earlier. He was kept 1-2 years too long and that really buried the program. NIL has changed things a lot, but it'll be interesting to see how a bigger war chest will allow us to compete across all sports for recruits against the likes of WVU. VT. Pitt, The Fruit, ect. Then of course if and when revenue sharing arrives ... maybe the Big will pay athletes more then the ACC, Big 12 ect. NIL though is the real tough nut to crack. I guess if the athletes become "employees" then the BIG/SEC teams can leverage those massive media contracts.

Our defense is good, with some depth from being great.

Our offense has 3/5 of an Oline, a QB in training, no real TE, and our best RB is out. Yet we fought to a lead at half time.

We are also extremely young.

Actually last night gave me hope.

We have a Red Shirt Freshman QB who has a cannon for an arm and can break a run. Need to get him help on the online and WR weapons. Sam Brown will help in the run game.

It’s a great Nickel base D. Number 0 makes it great because he is such a special player.

Ash was only here for 2.5 years. While I agree he was a walking mess of incompetence, the program was already a disaster by the end of flood. Remember, Ash inherited a team that something like 7 players on the defense got arrested at practice the previous year and the team was under NCAA investigation.
No what more money from the Bug 10 will help us with is facilities. And yes, facilities are directly tied in with recruiting. Hard to convince these guys with offers to places with specific, elaborate football buildings and convince them Rutgers will maximize their potential

Isn't that statement true of most bad programs?

agreed. Our d line is also paying very well. We have 2 players on it that require to be chipped our double teamed. And the others are good to solid also.

Not as young as you might think.. 5 defensive starters are seniors. Cruikshank and Ryan are seniors.
That said we just played the best half of football we’ve played as a program in 5+ years. I’ll take it!

It was actually almost 4 years (but 3+ seasons) under Ash. Hired Dec. 2015, fired Sep. 2019. Coached the 2016, 2017, 2018, and partial 2019 seasons.

Agree that he didn't inherit much from Flood and that additional resources could have helped close the facilities gaps that much sooner, across multiple sports.

3.5… I was incorrect. it all blends together in that era tbh, lol. Point being, yes Ash sucked, he was no where near ready for a HC job, but he also inherited a total mess. Tbh it might have been a worse situation that what Greg 2.0 walked into

I think I just mentally blocked out the 2016 season lol. Don’t ever want to remember any part of that year

2015 had 4 wins and 2019 had 2 wins. Both were dumpster fires. Not sure how you can say better or worst.

2016 was a year following 5 of our players literally being arrested at practice along with the NCAA investigating the program bc flood didn’t make his players go to class. It’s was a far bigger dumpster fire than simply wins and losses. The damage Kyle Flood did to the program was unforgivable. Let’s let the record show of course, ash was in over his head, he had no idea what he was doing, that’s undeniable. But I don’t think he was turning a blind eye the way Flood was when it came to simple things like making sure your team attends class. Heck we got the bowl game last year due to academics, with a lot of Ash’s guys on the roster. Means nothing as far as wins and losses but Flood couldn’t even manage his team

Please stop. We are currently receiving full share and have been since the six year phase-in ended on 6/30/2020. The fact that we are using a small portion of that share to repay prior borrowings is a separate and distinct matter.

I'm the world's most pessimistic sports fan, but all week I was telling everyone I knew that I just had a gut feeling that we were going to beat Michigan yesterday. And the way we played in the first half, I was delighted. And with 6 minutes to go in the 3rd Quarter, I had turned off the game.

I think that's the fastest I've ever went from "thrilled" to "I can't watch this anymore" in any sport in my lifetime. It was like 8 minutes and 30 seconds of game time.
