I know we have informally discussed names for lot 8, but I would like to revisit that issue. We need to suggest some names for lot 8 to the University. The university may have a process for the actual apartment building (I think the apartments on Livingston are still labeled as numbers) we need to find a monicker for the place.....we will have retail, a large park, fixed and loose seating , and an outdoor television quality screen where students, staff, alumni, and members of the broader community can enjoy sporting events, movies, cultural programming , and hopefully original student programming.
To ensure the viability of the venue and the retail we need to encourage and advertise to a broader audience so brand identity is essential ...lot 8 or the parking lot formerly know as the grease truck lot will not cut it ......so have at it ..no promises but we have been asked to explore ....

Union Place, which was suggested by Scarlet Pride in the original thread. I'll find it & bump it. Go with Union Place. /thread

How about "We Screwed the Grease Trucks out of this land Plaza"? Too long?

Yes Mike love that one ...I also think we should reopen the parking lot and bring back the trucks ...I was just thinking that

I like 'Rutgers can do better than cholestrol-laden food disguised as nutrition, situated on prime real estate'

Ha. It's amazing that some people believe a parking lot, with a few trucks, was a good use of that space. That defies reason.

I'd be all for a proper food truck pod, but you could do it on 1/5 the space and make it more attractive with more diverse offerings. What was there was mediocre at best.

For someone who loves to go on about public gathering places, you sure like to shit on the ONE true public gathering place RU had, which is going to be replaced by what almost surely will be a generic and ultimately underutilized public place.

You could certainly have a food truck country on less space- thats not a public gathering space, its a series of walkup windows. And you could obviously make better use of prime real estate that a parking lot.

But for the OP - Union Place.

Yes and no. In this thread, I am talking about the overall parking lot. And I meant a new grease truck area on 1/5 the space of Lot 8 - not 1/5 the space of the little grease truck section. Obviously the latter wouldn't be a "pod" (which implies that there is collection of trucks w/ seating).

I happen to like food truck pods. But I would prefer variety to one with several versions of the same schlock.

As for the replacement - you're speculating about how successful it will be. If done right, it could be a big success. We shall see.

the only issue i see with using the word union is that many schools call their student center a student union and some people will think it odd that the union commons/square/place and student center aren't adjacent to each other. (also, when i think of the word union i think of a rail station)

I like Union Place or some variation. I don't think it's a problem with con fusion because Rutgers students have never known the term student union to be used so they won't mistake anything and grad students will figure out after one day the difference.

I'm OK with "Union Place/Square/Common/Green", except that Hamilton Street is actually the more prominent street involved here (versus Union St.). Wouldn't "Hamilton Place/Square/Common/Green" make more sense?

The property already has a name: "Gray Terrace" (see link)

"Robert Wood Johnson the first and his family lived in a Victorian house called Gray Terrace on the corner of College Avenue and Hamilton Street "

RWJ - Gray Terrace

The Knight walk
Scarlet lawn
The lawn
Rutgers square
Fat bitch down, fat koko down memorial park

I got nothing really. The union stuff to me is bleh.

Once again Scarlet Pride leads with the right/correct answer here.

Unless it's a legal reason or somebody higher up at DEVCO is mad at Chris..."You let some guys on a message board pick the name?!", I really don't see what all the hubbub is about naming it Union Place.

To me, "Union Place" sounds rather generic, and the name will confuse newcomers. Is there something more exciting than that?

Scarlet Square.
Henry Square.
Schiano Square.
Colonel's Corner.
Pernetti Park.
James Place (in memorium of great Rutgers alum and supporter James Gandolfini. I actually really like this one).

1. I am confused why somebody would be confused?

2. Why does it have to have an "exciting" name? If done right, the project itself should provide that.

Some newcomer is going to think that it's "where the student union" is. More importantly, "union place" could be in South Bend, Iowa, for all it tells you. At least it should have some local reference.

Did you look at the map yet?

Zoom in and look around.

i'd also say that looking at a map reminds one that the street that it (the name) refers to will be behind the complex and won't be visible from the 'place'

"why is this area called Union Place?"
" because it borders union st.,the center of Rutgers' fraternity community"
"so where is this union st? i only see college ave. and hamilton st"
"It's behind the dorm rooms, at the far end of the lawn"

Is there really that much debate about names? Did you ask someone all those questions about every other development and building at Rutgers?
And Rutgers has five student centers but yet we are worried something with the word union in it will confuse people?

Trying to come up with "exciting" names rarely works. What is exciting about Gateway? It's generic but works. I think Scarlet Square seems kind of generic as well. It's like well it's Rutgers so let's call it Scarlet something. The Scarlet Green idea I think is odd because it's too colors in the name and there is barely anything green. I don't think it should have any mention of green when it is pretty much all hard scape.

You know what would be a great name? The name of a donor that gave 8 figures to get his name on it or perhaps name it after a great professor/researcher.

That is certainly another option. Take the name that Rutgers assigns to one of the buildings, and call the lawn area after it. So if Rutgers names the largest building McCormick Hall, then call the area McCormick Green or McCormick Place.

You are now three for three in thread.

I always vouch for a historical reference.
The Red Lion Plaza, named for the tavern that held the first classes (currently the Due Mari building I believe). From Lot 8, one could peek behind Scott Hall and find the bench on Voorhees Mall that is made from the stone of the original Red Lion Tavern.

id be all for that if penn state wasn't the lions

I like the concept of integrating a historical name into that relays how old the school really is:
Colonial Square
Revolution Plaza
Queens Square
1766 Charter Place
Colonel Court

Anyway, I don't really care what they call it. Union place still has a nice ring and does not seem confusing to me.

Revolution would be pretty cool

As the site is caddy cornered from the Olde Queens campus, maybe the Lot 8 redevelopment can be called 'New Queens', or somehow incorporate a name that signifies a revitalization of this parcel/lot. Boring, i know, but just another suggestion that might spawn other ideas.
