We are in the middle of marketing and leasing lot 8 retail. We have decided to include establishments that have successful track records and identity from around the state and NYC and Philly......we are hopeful to include a convience store and a tech store in addition to a variety of food establishments. We are looking for suggestions.......while the lease is not done the coffee option will most likely be a relatively well known establishment from Seattle .....so in addition to general suggestions first question 1) Surf Taco or Taco Truck.?

are you sure about having another Starbucks only a few feet away from the one in the gateway? also, was wondering if there was any way we could get Shake Shack on campus? And to answer your question, id say Surf Taco.

I think the key is to have things with a successful track record, but not things are are ubiquitous.

Something like Surf Taco or Shake Shack makes sense because it has a "name" but is far from ubiquitous.

As for a convenience store: Wawa would probably be the best move. It's a step up from 7-11.

Those 2 are everywhere in NJ.
Maruca's could show NB a thing or 2 about making good pizza. http://www.marucaspizza.com

Not sure how many food places, but if there are 3, then Panera, Surf Taco & Shake Shack would be good. Shake Shack is better than 5 Guys. Or see if Hansel or some other local food is interested in 1 spot.

For convenience store, which ever is better out of Quick Chek, 7-Eleven & WaWa, as I'm guessing Krauszer's is out.

What electronics store, Apple?

After several visits by Shake Shack we didn't make the cut....we were disappointed .....anyone ever been to insomnia cookies?
The coffee concession in gateway sells "Starbucks products" is not a Starbucks .....anyone ever been to a honey grow .?
Also "tony Baloneys".

their loss, whatever we put in that spot will be a huge hit

Yes, it would kill a lot of stomachs and small intestines. Next door, a 'Colostomy Bags Я Us' would make a killing.

how dare you, ive grown up on white castles

Tito's Burritos is a North Jersey chain with a few locations that I'm a big fan of.

I don't think they've franchised yet, but Loaded in Garwood and especially Urban Burger in Cranford are both really good, and blow the doors off Five Guys/Shake Shack/Smashburger, etc... The best burger place though, if you can get it, is Bobby's Burger Palace (West Windsor, Paramus, etc...)

The weirdest thing about NB restaurants is that the options for Chinese and Indian are very poor when both are huge in literally every other town in the area, so if two good ones there could be found.

I know the Loaded/Urban Burger guys. They make excellent burgers. With some financing, they could blow up. They're bootstrapping it now.

I think Coffia is looking for brand names. These guys aren't there yet.

There are already a ton of burger places on Easton Ave, so I don't think a new burger place in Lot 8 really adds anything.

I think something different for New Brunswick would be a plus, and could also attract a lunch crowd from J&J and other businesses. Something like Panera is missing in New Brunswick (although there is Au Bon Pain at the student center, that is a bit far to attract business people at lunch).

And while I get the appeal of Starbucks as a college hangout, there is already a Starbucks on George St and a Starbucks cafe in the bookstore. Even a different coffee chain (like PJ's which has a store in Highland Park), would be a refreshing change.

As a young twenty something year old, I can tell you that you can never have enough Starbucks. I think it would definitely take away some business from the one in Gateway and the George Street, but you can bet that a Starbucks directly on College Avenue would be an absolute goldmine. Especially since it is right at the beginning of the Avenue.

In regards to Taco Truck or Surf Taco, I have had Taco Trucks many times in Newark where I work and it is very good. Only problem with Taco Truck is the menu feels somewhat limited. I have never had Surf Taco but I do know a LOT of people like it. I would imagine that since it's a surf n' turf restaurant, they may have more options on the menu compared to Taco Truck.

Surf taco would kill... Lots of ru students are already familiar w it bc it is so big at the shore, particularly by belmar where most head down over the summer. A panaro bread would be a great addition as well, good fairly priced food and another option to study at w refillable coffee. An urban outfitter, Abercrombie or h&m would also do very well, lower priced young clothes big w that age group. A wawa is a no brainer if a conviemce store is added, even though it was founded in pa, it has a huge nj following and some people are almost cultish about it. If a surf taco, panara, urban outfitter and wawa opened up that area would be a complete homerun. Excited to see the end result.

Jim - Wawa vs Quick Chek is a matter of opinion and also depends on the particular stores you are comparing.

But both blow 7-11 away. Unlike 7-11, you can get freshly made sandwiches, hot soup, and fresh breakfast items at Wawa or Quick Chek.

Urban outfitters somewhere near campus in town would be a grand slam. Not sure if it makes sense in this exact location though.

This +1000

Though there are a few Wawas, I'd say there are still plenty more QC's in the area. I'd also prefer Wawa prepared food over QuickChek.

A 3rd Tastee's is also an interesting idea that might do very well.

I agree that Surf Taco & Panera should be definites. What about Jersey Mikes?

Anything will do well in that location.

Personally, I know when I was a student I spent a good amount of time driving to rte 1, highland park, or piscataway on the weekends just so I could study somewhere besides campus that was different scenery.

I would of loved a Panera as Au Bon Pain was always overcrowded when I would go there.

As for a Starbucks or another Taco place they would also both be fine there. Downtown NB is another world for most off-campus students as they mostly tend to stay around the Easton Ave area.

As far as convenience store, a WaWa would be more than welcomed by most I'm sure but they probably need a large amount of space don't they?

WaWa has an amazing reputation among college aged people. Students would go crazy for it.

Don't me go all shore on you people. I may live in Hudson County now, but Surf Taco and Wawa would be GAMECHANGERS for NB.

They both have a cultish following. Surf Taco has stickers everywhere. When Wawa opened up in Kearney, my facebook was loaded with posts about it (and it's a 10-15 drive without traffic from my area).

And comparing Wawa with another convenience store...it is blasphemy I am sorry. Wawa is in a league of its own and it has actually been studied as a business model because Wawa flat out does things right.

Go into a Wawa versus a NB convenience store in particular...it's night and day.

I would go as far as to say that those two in that spot would persuade students to go to RU in greater numbers...a reminder of our state culture (and yes, I'm aware they have Wawa in PA but I don't believe they are as far west as the cult) and it would get some yuppies thinking as they don't have them in Hoboken, JC or Motown.

There's no difference between Wawa and Quick Chek. People who think Wawa is amazing and magical and unique need to get out of their South Jersey bubble.

Wawa hyperbole is distasteful; it's a convenience store where product is generally higher priced than in a supermarket. There is a wawa in north Brunswick which is not much different from the quick check in highland park, both would make money in that location.

Jonny and Korbmeister,

While I agree with you guys that either would do well, there is a "difference" between the two. Maybe not magical one (lol?) but there is a "difference." Which if I was choosing I would pick a WaWa.

And Surf Taco would do well too. The NB location would be a new frontier for them.

A New Bruns Surf Taco would be similar to the Red Bank one I'd assume but would hopefully be larger.
