Here's an e-mail I just got as a retired Rutgers employee.

Members of the Rutgers Community:

In response to objections raised by three of our faculty unions (AAUP-AFT, AAUP-BHSNJ, and PTLFC), a designee of the New Jersey Public Employment Relations Commission (PERC) has today temporarily reinstated that part of the university mask mandate requiring all individuals to wear face coverings in our libraries. The PERC order also allows individual faculty members to require that face coverings be worn in indoor teaching spaces.

The PERC order was the result of an action filed by the unions late Friday afternoon seeking to restrain the university from implementing and enforcing the revised COVID-19 policy announced on Monday, September 26. Certainly, our decision to lift the mask mandate was based on current state and federal practices and is rooted in science and data.

Today’s action by PERC is temporary and will remain in place until a final decision is made by PERC following its consideration of the submissions by the university and the unions. The university is confident that its September 26 announcement was consistent with all applicable state and federal laws.

Sweet baby Jesus WTF kind of nonsense is this? PATHETIC!!! No wonder we can't recruit!!!

(j/k on the LAST part....)

It's almost like Rutgers is trolling the biggest tools on the board. And winning! (For once)

It's hilarious that you would call anyone else a tool!
How many times do you have to be proven wrong before you admit defeat?

Keep in mind that it's not Rutgers that's requiring the partial return of masking. It's a state commission that arbitrates disputes between public agencies and their employees. The requirement is there only until the commission decides whether Rutgers improperly lifted the mandate. Think of it as a temporary restraining order.

What was I proven wrong about, exactly?

I don't even know wtf you are.

I think allowing faculty unions and not CDC guidelines or the medical community to dictate masking is problematic
This ruling allows individual teachers to demand students wear masks in their classroom.
You can either say who cares, or enough is enough.

What are the policies for the other state schools in NJ - all we can compare to apples to apples

I had assumed that professors could still require masks in their classrooms even with the lifting of the mandate. But maybe that's not the case.
