So much wrong in this thread - would take a week to correct all the misinformation, lol. It's interesting that the actual COVID science threads we had going for 18 months were shut down as have been subsequent COVID threads, but yet this one, started by a mod, chugs right along, despite all the usual shenanigans. To quote NJFAN, who some may remember, hmmmmm.
I was wondering when you were gonna jump in, post some truth, and quickly lead to the thread disappearing.

Seriously
You want to walk around with a respirator or mask in public the rest of your life, go for it
Yeah...that's too much to ask for your country and fellow Americans. How could they expect you to put up with such torture and inconvenience just so some fat, old people don't die too soon ?
Inconveniences suck.

Here's some learnin' for the antivaxx/anti-science crowd. What follows are two posts I made on the COVID thread on TOS (which is still chugging along) detailing the benefits of COVID vaccines in saving upwards of 20MM lives worldwide through 2021 and how Americans over 50, who are double boosted, are 29X less likely to die from COVID than unvaccinated folks over 50. The COVID vaccines are possibly the biggest medical breakthrough in medical history. Full stop.

Some more COVID science for those still following the pandemic. Fantastic analysis in a recent paper by the Imperial College of London in the Lancet showing that COVID vaccines cumulatively saved about 20 million lives, worldwide, from their rollout at the end of 2020 through the end of 2021. The initial estimate was 14 million deaths prevented by vaccinnes, based on actual reported deaths, but that was adjusted to 20 million deaths prevented, using the much more accurate estimates of COVID deaths obtained by looking at excess deaths, as per the ongoing analyses conducted by the Economist (one of the best sources out there for unbiased analysis).

The Economist article and the Lancet paper are linked below and the graphic below is from the Economist article and it's a simple, yet elegant representation of the data. Of course, millions more lives have been saved since the end of 2021, but presumably this paper will be updated soon to reflect that. It's still mind boggling to me that there would be people out there who wouldn't jump a the chance to be vaccinated and boosted, as the science behind the safety and efficacy of these vaccines is crystal clear.

Post from 7/23:

With COVID cases due to Omicron variants on the rise, still, in much of the world, including the US, it's at least reassuring to see the protective effect of the COVID vaccines with regard to death, especially for those boosted 2X. As per the CDC's latest data, as reported on by Dr. Eric Topol, through May 2022, Americans over 50, who have received the primary series of vaccinations (edit: this is 2 doses of the mRNA vaccines by either Pfizer or Moderna or 1 dose of the J&J adenovirus vaccine) plus 2 booster doses, are 29X less likely (a 96% reduction) to die from COVID than unvaccinated Americans of the same ages.

And people over 50 with one booster shot and/or the original primary series of vaccinations were about 7-8X less likely to die from COVID than unvaccinated people. The take home message is that the vaccines are still doing a great job of preventing death (even if not transmissions, due to the evolution of the virus), especially for those who are double boosted - so get your booster shots!! As I posted a few weeks ago, worldwide, a conservative estimate is that 20MM lives have been saved from the COVID vaccines, which is simply astounding, given many thought we wouldn't even have any vaccines until about now when all this started.
