Rutgers men's track and field opened day one of the 2018 Outdoor Metropolitan Championships hosted at the Bauer Track and Field Complex. The Scarlet Knights claimed three event titles, including a 1-2-3 showing in the javelin event.

Additionally, Rutgers sent some Scarlet Knights down South to the Tennessee Relays. Freshman Taj Burgess highlighted Friday's events in Knoxville with a title in the 400m.

sounds impressive. Safe to say our track and field program has taken a step up in quality?

If the measure is possible performance in the Big Ten championships, the results in the Met championship don't say much.
Winkler has the best Big Tenperformance in the Hammer this season so far and as defending NCAA champion, he would be the favorite.
Walsh's winning time in the 10,000 meter run is not in the top 10 Big Ten performances this season and would not have been last year.
In the Javelin, I think the best Rutgers athlete Chris Mirabelli who was AA last season appears to be redshirting and would return for a 5th year. Krezmer currently has the third best result in the Big Ten and the other 2 are at 6 and 9 so Rutgers could score there.
Realistically, Rutgers has a legit shot at scoring in only 4 running events, two throwing events and possible 2 jumps.
The strenght of the team right now is in the 400 meters. Izaiah Brown has won 3 straight Big Ten titles and 1 outdoor but his times this year have been slower. He placed second in the Mets today.
Jermaine Griffith was an AA 2 years ago but has only run a few races this year and his time have not been as impressive. The star right now is Frosh Taj Burgess who currently has the second best Big Ten time this season of 46.32.
Frosh Boaz Madeus could make the finals of the 400 meter hurdles.
Paul Jairus and Tobi Tella have some decent results in both the LJ and TJ and could score but have been inconsistent and will need to be at their best to make the top 8 in either event.

Just like in Wrestling the B1G Championships are important, but, the real performance measure in Track and Field is the NCAA Championships.

I think we have to be able to perform at the big ten level first. Winkler could win an NCAA title but if there are only a handful of athletes finishing in the top 8 in their event in the Big Ten I would not really consider that it is a successful season and a growing program.

"sounds impressive" but not so much. None of the times on the track will even make the finals of the BIG championships, let alone qualify for the NCAA's. Not sure what is going on with Brown, unless he was injured again, but his times have been about what he was running in HS.

Who is Stefan Adams from LIU-Post? Ran a (personal) college best of 47.03 to get Isiah Brown (47.65). Brown has the Rutgers record of 45.32 and Adams did what he had to do. Impressive effort.
