The inaugural Canadian Collegiate Invitational conducted by Golf Canada is being held at the Öviinbyrd Golf Club in MacTier, Ont. The54 Hole event features 9 US teams with a connection to Canadian golf along with the 2024 Canadian college champion. Included in the field are 3 teams that played in the 2024 NCAA's in Notre Dame, Missouri, and Michigan State. Along with Rutgers are Penn State, Michigan, Washington State, Kent State, Miami (OH), and the University of British Columbia.

Rutgers comes in after finishing 5th in last week's Gopher Invitational. Noah Kumar led RU with a 2nd Place finish.

Rutgers will go with the same lineup that played in the Gopher Invitational

Grad Noah Kumar
SR Weston Jones
SO Derek Guiterrez
FR Bennett Espenshade
FR Argyle Downes

They will be paired with players from Washington State and Kent State. Downes will be paired with former Scarlet Knight, James Newton, who transferred to Kent St after his Freshman year.

It's been a tale of 2 Rounds for the team (+4, -3) but none more than RU Frosh's Bennett Espenshade and Argyle Downes. After shooting a 13 Over 85 in Round 1, Espenshade turned it around with a 2 Under 70 in the afternoon. Downes did the reverse with an 4 Under 68, followed by a 10 Over 82.

On a more Positive side, Weston Jones is currently in a 3 way tie for 2nd after shooting twin 68's (-8). Noah Kumar is +8 after shooting 78-74. Derek Gutierrez is 1 stroke better after 78-73.

The team finished Round 1 in 8th and moved up to 6th after Round 2. Missouri used a 2nd Round team 15 Under to take a large lead and is poised to run away with it.

Round 3 was not kind to RU as the team shot a +17, the 2nd worst round out of the 30 played by the 10 teams. Frosh Argyle Downes shot an Even Par 72 and Weston Jones a 73. After that no one shot better than 79 (Noah Kumar). Derek Gutierrez and Bennett Espenshade shot 81's. The 17 Over dropped the team to 8th only ahead of Miami (OH) and U of British Columbia.

Even a traditionally good team was not immune as Mizzou followed up their 2nd Round -15 with a +10, a 25 stroke swing, enabling Notre Dame to take the title. So much for Mizzou running away with 1st place.

Weston Jones had a good tourney even tho the final round didn't help but finished a very respectable 7th (-7). Michigan's Hunter Thomson won the individual with a 3 Round score of -14, Kent St's Isiah Ibit was 2nd with a -12 and Michigan State's Ashton McCulloch 3rd at -11. Argyle Downes finished T32, Noah Kumar T43, Derek Gutierrez T46 and Bennett Espenshade 51.

Final standings

1. Notre Dame.......................-17
T2. Missouri..........................-12
T2, Michigan
4. Kent State.........................-11
5. Michigan State................-6
6. Penn State..........................E
7. Washington State...........+17
8. RUTGERS..........................+18
9. Miami (OH)........................+19
10. U of British Columbia..+33

The team has 3 weeks off before they head to The Fighting Irish Classic. This is the tourney that Chris Gotterup burst on the college golf scene with an 8 stroke victory helping him to take the title of BIG10 Golfer of the Year. Among the 15 teams competing will be Tennessee, Duke, Louisville, BIG members UCLA, Washington, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan State, Purdue, and of course host Notre Dame.

It's been the problem for a while imo. They just don't seem to be able to field a team where 3-4 players all have a good tourney at the same time. You can see by the scores over the 2 events every one has the ability to play really well but just can't often seem to put it together at the same time.

The hope is this is a young team overall and they will do better.
