My niece is very good friends with CJ. I had the opportunity to speak with him while enjoying Christmas Eve dinner at my sister's home.
For the sake of full disclosure, I am a Seton Hall grad, and a Rutgers Law grad.

CJ is a fine young man who is an excellent representative of Rutgers University. He stated that he is extremely happy for the opportunity before him and is thrilled and proud to be playing for Rutgers.

Some of the criticism aimed at CJ over the last 24 hours has been mean-spirited and hurtful. Although he was uncomfortable admitting it, he is aware of this message board and some of the recent content. I recommend treading lightly regarding some criticism aimed at the players. CJ is a kind hearted soul and deserves to be treated in a better manner.

Agreed. I did say he was exposed last night (truth) but it was not mean spirited. The truth is though we would not have eleven wins without him.

CJ is exactly what we needed a hard working fun kid who loves the game, his teammates and the fans. I am sure that he works incredible hard and I know he plays hard. He is probably well aware of his own limitations so he certainly does not need my help to figure them out.

That's nice that he was able to spend Christmas Eve with your sister's family.

Regarding criticism on these boards, I think you see many posters call out other posters for mean-spirited posts. But if you've been around these boards for a while, you see that mean-spirited posts are just a fact. I don't know what causes adult men and women to lob childish insults at college students, but it isn't going to stop. (Plus you have legitimate criticisms which are part of game and team analysis.) It is probably best that student-athletes stay away from these boards.

Add family members, friends, and loved ones to that list. Every sports message board houses childish fans, who simply can't control themselves.

Oh please. Players want to be praised for every little thing, and then they can't handle even mild criticism? So tired of this nonsense. Hell, I was tired of it when I was still IN college. (Yeah, I heard it. Believe me, I heard it.)

Most of what was here was tempered by love of his work ethic and enthusiasm. But you couldn't possibly have watched that game and wondered why he couldn't hit ANY of those 5-footers he kept taking. Doesn't mean we don't love having him, and doesn't mean we won't cheer him whenever he does one of those "every little things."

"Deserves to be treated in a better manner?" As long as good taste is observed -- and I'm sure not everyone observes it, but most do -- get a thicker skin or don't play basketball in your shorts in front of 10,000 people.

People can be critical of players, but imo, it should be respectful

Its been said a billion times on here, but it bears repeating: if you wouldn't say something to someones face, dont type it

There were posts that talked about CJs skillset/limitations that were fine. But there were also a bunch that were bush

I dont get people sometimes. Being civil and respectful is not that hard.

I am very glad that CJ chose RU. I am the guy who wanted a Pikesicle for Coach Pikiell and a fat head for CJ. He seems to have so much fun on the court. He represents our team so well. We would not have won anywhere near 11 games without him. Thanks CJ.

CJ comes to play every game and gives 100% effort when he's on the court. He contributes valuable minutes and is a quality representative of the RU program. Without him, RU wouldn't have won 11 games this year.

I was in the gym last Knight and entered the gym at halftime up. I'm no X and O's guy but from what everyone was saying here and the announcers on the radio it seemed imminent the fouls were gonna hurt RU in the end and Seton Hall would likely come back?

Frankly given the invective I personally received on here from 1-2 last night ('ve worked out and been the 'small guy" in the gym for years so very very little bothers me) I think half of you felt so good at halftime you "whipped it out" and started spanking it. You weren't finished when the 2nd half started and after Seton Hall ralied were very cranky when you couldn't complete the act.

A couple of points:

1) From everything I've read on this board CJ is a DELIGHT. He plays hard, with incredible enthusiasm and seems to already be one of all-time Rutgers favorites.
What impresses me is that keep hearing how greatful he is to be playing for RU. This is a fairly rare guy who "gets it". He's a great rep of Rutgers and I hope he keep involved with RU as an alum. also as a UNC Chapel Hill alum I know he was Wilmington but his seeming attitude is refreshing vs some of the prima donnas at UNC.

2) CJ isn't a 5-star player-he has limitations. However, unlike playing the pretty bad teams Rutgers has going up against better player will only make CJ better. Come Big Ten/B1G tourney time this game may be a blessing.

3) Don't know what Seton Hall has left from last year but obviously some of that nucleus is back including Delgato. Last year they took out Villanova in the Big East Championship Game who in turn beat Carolina for the title (with the help of the parents of the Carolna player who took the winning shooter into their family for years growing up).

4) The 1st half really demonstrates Rutgers is ALREADY closing the gap between the programs (still wouldn't even call Seton Hall a good program-they've had a few very good teams as of late). As I predicted here over a month ago I said we'd start landing 4 star top 50-100 players soon and that only took 2 or so weeks!
Luckily for Seton Hall the 2018 class is loaded because I KNOW PIKIELL will land 1-2 4 star plus players from that class. By virtue of scholarship limitations so likely will Seton Hall so both program will probably be very good during the next few years. However I feel Rutgers stands up VERY WELL against Seton Hall in the recruiting area. remember in the 70's pre Big East beating Seton Hall by 20-25 was a regular happening.

5) NJOY the ride. I'm sitting here on early Christmas AM as a lousy hotel in a room having lost pretty much next to a guy I'm half scared will flip out. Not everything goes perfect. Rutgers already has more wins than last year (with reported a weaker than usual B1G schedule on the burner) and a 4-star center that has eluded us since seemingly Roy Hinson.

6) Do your best to support the players and be nice to your fellow fans and players.
Though perhaps a function of winning (NEVER HEARD AN ECOMOMIC ARGUMENT)
as an undergrad back in 1981-1986 (on Cook with many players) I could not bELieve the amount of hate directed towards some of the players-one of whom was a friend. My friend on the team was maybe a tad cocky (not moreso and less than many athletes) and maybe a tad of a womanizer (don't remember him stealing anyone's girlfriend)
but frankly he was a pretty damn good guy from a catholic school (the prior doesn't oft mean anything).

I'm gonna pick on my old buddy Shields here whom I attended high school and Cook with. Shields bless him has a great love and enthusiasm for RU and in my experience probably as good a moral character as 90-100% here including my current crew. However, I'd be at a game Saturday with Shields who would root so hard for RU many people would be embarrassed to sit with him (had to remind a few he was a diehard) then two days later he'd be making hateful comments about my friend on the team he'd be rooting for 2 days earlier! I'm picking on my old buddy Shields but it was MANY people (and maybe it wasn't bad per se but you don't know what gets back to the player-or anyone) It would also be I hate this school or that school for VALID reason.

In sum with one exception in all the years Ive been a student or fan there was ONE (namely unfortunately the high ranking Doug Kokoskie) player who was NOT appreciative of my support (maybe because I was kicking his a** in the classroom).

Be supportive to all of R athletes, it's a lot of work on top of usually a big academic workload. They support us.

I agree. Those are probably the same people that was cheering for him when he played well. We lose by 26 easily if his presence was not there. CJ definitely has my support!

Just because someone throws in 2 kind sentences.....they think they can skewer a student athlete

It is one thing to critique play. It is quite another to criticize with personal insults. That is the difference I see.

I like Gettys and he's an important player on this team. I do wonder why any player or their families would be on any fan message board. My friends that played in the Big East and now coach in the Big East never did. They couldn't give two shits what would be posted on these boards whether positive or negative.

Couldn't believe how many fans at the Rock are just flat out asses to our players. RU fans too. Like entitled whiny babies. I pay all of this money and how dare these kids not play well for me!

But there are several who do.

Either way, just boggles my mind how tough people get behind a screen name.

Shame it is that way , but many posters take generalized constructive criticism as directed at them and react by attacking any suggestion that the players should be treated fairly, respectively and with the understanding that they are not pros , even if some posters act like being on scholarship makes them one.

I know but why would you? It's an anonymous fan board so people will say all kinds of crazy stuff. As a player or a family member/friend, you would have to have some thick skin to read these boards and not take what is said to heart.

I actually love Gettys and I'm happy that he's with us this year. He does some things real well that we haven't had a center do here in ages. He is also limited athletically which will hurt him in some games. He reminds me a little of a friend of mine who played center for Seton Hall 10 years ago.

Tell Mr Getty's at this rate the final 33 million will be raised in time for his kid to enjoy the Benifits of facilities upgrades. RUTGERS fans criticize and insult all but when it's time to really help and step up only 1800 out of thousands and thousands show up.

guys this was the game that will make the season better for all of us and Gettys will get it. You learn. Its not like the guy was out of place or didnt know the play. He will be fine

BElieve it or not I CUT the post by about 1/3 as I cut a 2nd story and didn't want to cut into my old buddy Shields even much as I did-just my most vivid example. Also nothing I said is "woe for me"-the whole post was about supporting R players because even my friends and classmates who supported the team (those not acting like the Rutgers 1000) were nasty towards team members

Personally wish I had the money to go. Sounds like the most enjoyable the team to watch
since Wenzel/Jordan/Van Gundy's 90-91 team! Definitely deserve R support!

Yes, I've been thinking for awhile that I've never seen a fanbase as nasty towards each other than RU's. ..And they wonder why we can't get the recRUits...That's NJ for you.

On the other hand UNC Chapel Hill won so much they were all spoiled (not compared to the NE Dookies). The whole attitude down there was God makes the sky Carolina blue because he loves us more than anyone-and Carolina can do nothing wrong.

Yes, CJ is definitely limited and will struggle in a whole bunch of B1G games. I think if you're just figuring that out now you don't know much about basketball. But most importantly, the team is much better with him than it would have been without him.

Yes, I've been thinking for awhile that I've never seen a fanbase as nasty towards each other than RU's.

Ash, two boards ago, some dopey Syracuse fans used to come on the RU board and talk trash. But on their own board, they were calling each other out and demanding Boeheim's scalp--he won an NT after all that, and chewing out players. Our own board drew a flood of new posters calling for FHJ to replace Gary Waters--and Mulcahy, unfortunately, was stampeded into one of the biggest mistakes in Rutgers' sports history. Firing a guy who had brought us to 3 NIT's in his 5 seasons in favor of a toxic guy who was a bad coach and a worse handler of people. Nature of message boards. Players should stay away when a team loses.

I am proud to have CJ as a member of our team

My criticism of him is that we only get him for one year!! Would love to have him here for 4

He plays with that hard nosed enthusiasm that makes me think of legends (football, admittedly) like Leonard and Battaglia

Thank him for coming here next time you see him
