Minnesota is beatable

I had an interesting encounter with a PSU fan--I am a volunteer firefighter. We were called to someone's home for an emergency. We were going about our work, and I noticed the homeowner had a PSU shirt on. She asked me a question about the issue we were trying to work on, and I answered it, and said I was a RU fan. Her response--we are going to kill you guys this year! I tried to convince the officer in charge that we needed to tear open a few walls to investigate further, but I was denied. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: But when I got her response, I was thinking --WTF, I am here helping her, and this is what I get? LOL.
Speaking of interesting encounters...glad we can have this fun dialogue but still know our battle lines but not have troll comments thrown out of left field...

where did eveyone go

you are having a fun dialogue calling out our fans. Calling them out for something you SAID your fans don't do. I provide some actually proof and you get defensive. Talk about not surprising.
Maybe that fire call I was talking about was at his house and it was his wife. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: Let's get back to the topic at hand--Minnesota.

Go on with the pedo comments...it's all you have at this point...same old same old...as if us fans had anything to do with it...your routine has been old for a while...

you are correct your fans didn't have anything to do with it. But you still worship someone who did. Even had a day for him not to long ago

If we were average Minnesota would be beatable, as would be every team from Illinois through the rest of the year. But we are not. We will need to play lights out and Gio would have to at least be Nova/Teel quality. Hope I am wrong but I do not see it, especially on the road. Of any of the remaining games I would say most likely win would be Cult or Indiana just because we are at home, maybe MSU because they just seem extremely bad.

So, what you are saying is, we win 4 of our last 5 and go bowling? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

5 turnovers against the Ilinni means we killed ourselves more than Illinois beat us. If we do not turn the ball over then this could be a game. That being said, do we have the skill level that will prevent the turnovers? I no longer know. As Bill Parcells used to say, "you are what your record says you are". If we play a clean game and play up to the level of our talent I would not be shocked at a win but I do not know if we are capable of it. It might actually be to our advantage to be on the road, no boo birds.

Yes. Did I mention in this thread, that if Leidner does not start, their starting QB Is a walkon, who just earned a scholarship after walking on in 2013?
Doesn't matter if you can't stop Minny's run game, he started against Maryland and they couldn't stop he run either

Because the administration chose to honor the 1966 team that he coached that day? Should we not celebrate our past teams because of who a coach may have been?

I only saw them in the Penn state game and thought the gophers looked solid. PSU had to come from behind twice at home to win in OT

This is exactly why people will never let it go. The 1966 thing is a loose cover. Why did they call it Joe Paterno day? Why not call it team of 1966? I'll wait..... you willing to admit Joe knew?

Quick Minnesota perspective here and thoughts:

The defense has a completely different look since the PSU game. 2 main pieces, arguably our best defender (best DB) back from suspension for the first 4 games in Hardin along with 3 other players. I believe we have those guys back we beat PSU going away. No excuses though, their guys made more plays than our guys.

Offense was atrocious vs Iowa. Completely unacceptable. Still a lot of questions marks but the 2 rbs are dangerous. Overall offense is still a work in progress. They are going to run, run, run or at least try.

This team is decent but has little margin for error. They give up too many dumb penalties. Defense is returning to 2014 form.

Pretty good special teams.

Anything is possible which is why we play the game. I will say this, if we stick with this kid Giovanni and he stays healthy we should beat MD.

it never fails the board ignores what we have seen from both teams and projects wins based on fantasy
The predictions are not based on past performance but rather on the possibility that Gio sparks the offense which gives the defense hope. College kids can over achieve if given a reason to believe. A win? Maybe not likely, but certainly possible. Fantasy would be thinking we might beat OSU, Wisc., or Mich this Saturday,

I'll let you keep waiting on that one...Other than being shown on the big screen JoePa nor his family were honored on the field...but the team was...i have no idea why they called it JoePa day other than it was his first year as head coach. To me it was a celebration of the 50th anniversary of that team which they routinely celebrate milestones like that at games.

To you it might not have been. To the people who planed it and the rest of the country it was jopa day. Hell you had fans coming here complaining it didn't honor him enough. Would have liked to see jopa honored on the field. Of course someone would ha e to go to hell and drag back his burning body

Did I hear it wrong or did they have a special ceremony in the showers for JoePa ?

Penn State might finish 8-4, maybe 9-3 this year. In light of all the controversy and NCAA punishment they faced it's amazing that they rebounded so quickly.

Every team is beatable

There is no evidence to suggest Rutgers can beat Minnesota so continue to dream..two tds in 16 quarters says no
I was impressed with our team in the second half, looked
much more inspired. Here's hoping that we continue looking
better as Gio gets more experience. Italians are great
leaders by the way. :)

Perspective! It does exist here!

Seriously, not many programs would have survived that 2011-2014 period when the scandal broke, multiple coaches were replaced, sanctions came down, recruits were largely looking elsewhere, and current players were able to leave without penalty.

Plenty of national columnists and other people took to Twitter to pronounce the death of Penn State football, saying it would be fortunate to win five or so games over the next few years. The fact that PSU made it through the sanctions period without a losing record is nothing short of remarkable, especially when you consider some of the other programs that had below-.500 seasons over that period. It's a testament to the players in the program, O'Brien and Franklin, and the students/alumni that PSU is even at this point.

Yes, Minnesota is beatable. As was Iowa. As was Illinois. As will be a bunch of other teams we'll play this year. Hasn't done us much good yet this year. Hope this changes soon!

Definitely more hopeful now that Gio is starting.

Outside the tough INT, he's looked the best (running/passing) than anyone else who has taken the field this year.

To these eyes, it's not even close.

I'm ok with the int from a young kid learning, it's the other stuff I hate!

I wrote that .500 was definitely possible with this team at halftime of the Illinois game. (We were down like 7-0 at the time.) Despite being called a moron, I truly believed it. So when Ash says that we aren't that far away from being a bowl team, I don't think he's wrong. I'll accept a crappy year if it means we keep building when it comes to talent and recruiting. I just hope the staff can figure out the best combination of players and plays to make us beat these teams (Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Maryland, Indiana, Penn State, easy OOCs, etc) like we are capable of.

love the optimism but I look at the 7 games we've played and how the coaches have managed the team, prep, adjustments, putting the plays and personnel in position to give us the best chance to win, qb situation, etc etc and am highly doubtful. We really have seen NOTHING from thsi staff in 7 games that says they can succeed here. imho

If we were playing Minny at home I would give us a chance, assuming the RU crowd got involved in a big way.

But I don't like to pick bad teams on the road and that's what we have in this game.

Not sure how Gio does in a hostile B1G environment in his first start. Could he get rattled early ?

And since our defense couldn't stop the Illini run game when we knew they couldn't throw I doubt that they will fare better this week.

Looking for reasons to be positive about a potential upset but Hope is the only thing I can come up with.

BTW I haven't seen a point spread yet.

Just giving you all my opinion.

Minnesota is a very well coached team. There defense does NOT miss tackles. So you can't rely on big plays. You need long sustained drives.

Hills is better at QB now that Pigrome. Pigrome has some moves and is nice as a change up in the game for us, but he's just not there.

If Maryland has Hills, I think we beat Minnesota. Maryland isn't great, but we are better than Minnesota, our defense shut Minnesota's offense down. The problem was the defense was on the field the ENTIRE game. Great game plan by Minnesota, just pound the ball bore us to death, and wait for the other team to make mistakes.

I think it's a winnable game if you can get some big plays and sustain some drives, because the Minn offense is really bad, Maryland just started a freshman QB and had a bad game with penalities, we had something like 8 holding calls and had a freshman QB in 2nd and 20 and 3rd in 20 all game. That's not a good formula for success.
