Guessing it's either Quitshear or JG, although BIG play has not opened yet. Most fans would focus on a rival player so we are probably a bit unusual in that we don't have a rival yet, so curious to hear your thoughts

For past players, Chris Simms hands down. Been going to Rutgers games since 1976 and I never heard booing at Rutgers Stadium like there was toward him when Texas came to Piscataway. For basketball, I think I will go with Troy Murphy from Northern Indiana College.

For the OP question, I will go with Guarantano. Despite his Dad going to Rutgers, he didn’t have to stay in New Jersey, but the way he did everything just showed no class. Jerking Flood around, then that stupid video , and then he and the family marching around on OUR campus wearing Tennessee crap all day at the Rutgers Shootout Day.

Have to agree....He should have gone to the tallest building in Knoxville to make his damn video, it felt premeditated that he did it in Times Square knowing that Rutgers markets itself as closest to NYC. Combine that with his dad potentially getting a job and it feels super sleazy. Glad

I heard Flood was jerking him and the family around by hiding certain facts with the program. Something as simple as where the players where living. I think Flood gave the family and JG reasons to go about how they went about it. Flood allowed the kid to come on your campus in UT gear. I love the job he is doing as OL coach but hearing the stories of his 4 yr reign as coach of your program, I wouldn’t blame anybody playing for that man.

What I remember about that game is Jackie Crooks had like a 30 yard td run and called it back on bogus holding penalty.

I don’t blame him for saying no to Flood. It was how he did it. I was at the 7vs 7 Shootout and it was the whole family wearing that Tenn stuff(except the Dad) who I did not see there. I just can’t see any coach, even Flood, allowing a top instate kid to do that. Would Bama or Auburn tell kids that committed to Georgia, Texas A&M, Florida, Clemson, etc. that they could do that?

It is kind of amazing that we got Texas to come all the way across the country to play an out of conference game at a then 42,000 seat stadium.

Was it because they promised Simms to play a game in this area?

Heading back to DC on the train from NYC one night prior to sitting down I look at the guy behind me. I lean over and say to him, “ are you who I think you are?” He says with a southern twang “I am “. It was Phil Simms. We talked about the Giants. He then spoke about his son who was the backup quarterback for the Jets. When there was a pause I said I really wished he went to Rutgers. I was hoping I got a yeah, it was a tough choice, etc etc. I got a shrug of the shoulders. Nothing more.

This

Flood should have shown a backbone and escorted him off campus.

Allowing this garbage to go on just exposed him as weak

You make a good point. I generally forget about these guys, but that was an extreme dickhead performance. If you do that, you better back it up and obviously he hasn’t. Rocky Top my a$$. Rocky bottom is more like it.

If I recall correctly, Simms came in after Texas had a lead, the crowd booing loudly

First play with him in, we blitzed, hit Simms and he fumbled

All that can be true. JG still gets the award. He could have easily said he was going to UT and not come on the recruiting visit. Then it would all be on Flood.

He could have told him to leave the camp but he couldn't escort him off campus.

Question, what happened to freedom of speech:)

Oooh, be careful HeavenUniv, Yeah Baby takes it as a personal affront that any Rutgers fan would boo Chris Simms in Piscataway just because he made the (very poor) choice to matriculate at Texas. Later in Simms' career, the booing he heard in Austin rivaled the booing at Rutgers Stadium, as he could never beat rival Oklahoma, and the fans in Austin preferred homegrown Major Applewhite.

Who cares?

At least a few and myself included. To me, this is an interesting thread and one that I actually read all the responses. It beats the grass thread, the weather threads and pretty much any other non RU football thread hands down.

How about Saquan Barkley. Him not coming led to the collapse of RU football. To make matters worse he goes to Pedofile U. Then he gets drafted by the Giants & is basically worthless

That's a good one and it started a major cascade of defections that crumbled a great recruiting class. But I still vote for JG.

He could have told him to leave the camp but he couldn't escort him off campus.

Freedom of speech is fine, but a little tactfulness and respect to your father's alma mater (or any team for that matter) goes a long way. Partial blame has to go to dad for allowing the family to all don the Vols gear (and @dontestrond if some of what you say is true it could have been approved and/or orchestrated by dad), but JG's actions cement him as the douche of all time to the RU program.
