First and foremost it is a JOKE that there is only a 4 team playoff. Because right now as it stands, Alabama, Ohio State and Clemson are autobids if they have 1 or zero losses. Doesn't matter who they lose too they are essentially automatically in if they have 1 or zero losses. How do we know they're truly the best teams in the country if they're essentially walking into the national championship.
Counter points for why people don't want an expanded playoff.
1) it's gonna water down the regular season WAH WAH WAHHHHH.
No, it's not dummy. In a 24 team playoff you give the top 8 seeds byes therefore now you have teams jockeying for seeding position and wanting to ensure that they're in the top 8. Sure, seeds 1-3 if undefeated going into the last week could potentially rest players and know if they lose they're still going to get a bye but then if they do lose and get the 7 seed lets say rather than the 2 seed they have a tougher opponent in the 2nd round of the playoffs. On top of this now, teams ranked 4-40 will now be scrapping tooth in nail for the final 6 weeks or so of the season to try to get in that top 8 for the bye or top 24 to get into the playoffs. NOW, if you lose two games in September your season isn't over as it is under the current format. Now we find ourselves with far more relevant games with implications EVERY SINGLE WEEK. Rather than under the current format where when only 4 teams get in, there's only a handful of games every week with playoff implications. The HUGE thing is that this would create more parity in college football too. Right now there's only about 3 programs who can truly pitch the playoff when recruiting, bama, clemson and ohio state. Now, teams 1-60 can realistically pitch that we have a shot at getting into the top 24 and making the playoff so if your goal is to play for championships, come here. This would even the playing field across the board. Let's be real does anyone think that Bama and Auburn aren't taking their final week serious due to already being in the playoffs? NO. These kids are also playing for the NFL money and want to have strong tape out there, I don't buy them taking weeks off because they're locked into the playoff.
2) But but but but these are college kids, they have class you know.
Give me a break. If you really cared about the college student why aren't you bitching and moaning that 1-aa, d2 and d3 has a playoff? Why aren't you bitching that during march madness some teams are on the road for weeks at a time? Fact is with football you can practice at home and go through your normal routine and then travel the day prior to the game and come home the next day after the game.
3) But but but what about TV these bowl sponsors are going to be pissed.
Well with a 24 team playoff format there will be 22 playoff games. Once we get down to 8 teams, those 4 games are played at 4 major bowl sites, then the final 4 teams played at 2 more major bowl sites then last but not least the CFP stays the same. The other 15 games can be rotated between the next tier bowls. Those bowls attendance and tv ratings now skyrocket, everyone wins. There's currently 40 bowl slots so the 18 other bowls not involved in the playoff can continue to play their toilet bowls and attendance and ratings probably won't drop off too much as fans of teams with continue to be fans of teams.
4) But but but we want to see better out of conference games.
WELL HERE'S YOUR SOLUTION. If teams have a little cushion and don't have to worry about how losing one game against a quality opponent in September can wreck their season then they'd be far more prone to scheduling legitimate out of conference opponents rather than cupcake U. Because what a 4 team playoff does is make september an irrelevant month as majority of the country schedules cupcake U while getting ready for their conference sked to begin. On top of this you're going to get alllll your fix of out of conference games in the playoff with teams playing everyone, we'll finally be able to determine a legitimate championship on the field, rather than in a board room.
5) Admittedly under a 24 team playoff my only conundrum is what to do with the conference championship games? I would get rid of them but I know conferences won't want to do that due to TV revenue generated from those games.
