The West Coast schools stars have dimmed a bit as the old guard of a group of schools rises to the top. I think there is a drop off after the first 6. UCLA certainly can get back into the mix to contend for the title. Game with Maryland is big for both and the latter has great metrics but alot to prove on the actual court. Iowa/Indiana/Nebraska/Ohio State all trying to build good enough resume to get to the tournament. Penn State and Northwestern might be slowly fading from tourney contention. Its a battle for the last Big 10 tourney spot among the last 4.

definitely the bottom of the league proving to be better...i think things are developing into tiers yet beyond the top 7 now that UCLA is on a course correction and then maybe a cut below Ohio State with a monstrous win for their resume and Maryland a talented enigma. Those are your likely 9 NCAA schools competing for bids. One from the next group of 9 could challenge. Indiana decent overall conference mark but getting wacked when playing to the top tier. Nebraska has been fading as has Iowa and I dont think the others are consistent enough to do anything

the other 8 are a jumbled mess right now.

1. Michigan State

10. Nebraska

17. Rutgers
18. Washington

I think the bottom 9 are competing to stay out of the bottom 3 and miss the Big 10 tournament

Nebraska may need to be lower, 5 in a row they lost and 2 at home.

Its truly mindboggling for Rutgers to be 17th in B1G Ten ranking having two elite players. Next season could be equally bad with the departure of Bailey and Harper.Meaningful changes in the coaching staff and roster formation must happen.

agree, sad but true. At 10-9 this team is what it is. Close losses to Alabama and Texas A&M were the outliers and not the norm

Nebraska has lost 5 in a row and now have road games at Wisconsin/Oregon with a home game in the middle vs Illinois...they very well could be on a 8 game losing streak soon. The schedule does ease after that but the damage to their psyche would likely be done.

with a healthy D Harp no way are we 17...More like 6-10...Again with a healthy D Harp

Illinois hurt by flu..no one feels sorry...part of things that happen. Definitely hit a bad stretch and they are already 4 games in the loss column behind MSU

Big resume building road win for Maryland

Teams without a winning league record shouldn't get a NCAA bid.Mediocrity is being rewarded.

We are down South for the winter and it's weird the way they give you the BTN here.

I think it's quite possible neither Iowa , Indiana or Nebraska get in.

The Big Ten could be a 4 or 5 bid league.

See this is the problem , Illinois loses 3 of 4 and is still 9 in the NET . You say no one cares Harper was hurt but look what happens when Illinois missed their top guard for 2-3 games and now their center for 1. They got their guard back but were waxed by Maryland at home. Never in the game and never made a run. But they are not penalized by that loss nor the prior ones. Rutgers missing Dylan was huge regardless of you ignoring it or saying no one cares because wins at Indiana and Wisconsin with a healthy Dylan changes the NET by 15-20 spots. Plus it changes the 10-9 to 12-7. Huge difference.

Because their other games and scheduled built their numbers up so much it entrenches them in the top 20 and they lost a school now #20 in the NET

You have no idea if Rutgers wins with Dylan..they didn't at Ohio State or Kennesaw State or Penn State

Injuries and illness happen to all schools at some point in the season. If you are good enough you find ways to overcome it

Guessing Indiana collapses like Michigan last year. Nebraska may be in trouble too.
Washington and Iowa appear to be struggling. We split with PSU.

USC and Minny improving.

Now my hope is we make the B1G hot and roll the dice and shock the world. NC State last year.

However, once again the B1G has RU with 4 of last 6 on the road. They treat RU so fair.
Many times conspiracy theories are correct.

Sorry. You do not lose 3/4 and get absolutely truck stomped by Maryland and only move one spot down. They were not an SEC powerhouse and in the top 10 for the season. The NET supposedly rewards you for keeping game within 10 but also punishes teams that lose by 21 on their home court. They should have dropped to 13-15.
You seem to downplay the significance of Dylan. Why I don’t know ? We have already identified the supporting cast as extremely disappointing and incapable of overcoming it , like these other teams you suggest. Illinois couldn’t overcome it and their supporting cast is 10 times better than ours. It makes a huge difference. No one is going to jump on you for saying missing Dylan affected our games. Dylan turning his ankle played a huge role in the Penn State loss as it didn’t just affect him physically but he couldn’t get in any rhythm the rest of the night and missed shots he normally makes. Shots that would have made a difference between a win and a loss. Your downplay of his flu bug and now his injury is bizarre.

Rutgers was 8-5 entering January

You want to just assume Rutgers wins games with 100% Dylan.

You need to win games when your top player goes out

Dylan had just come off the first triple double in 43 years against Columbia where we played arguably our most complete game of the year . Indiana was the next game. He got the bad flu and was out. Do you not see the correlation to go from 8-5 to 10-9. ?

We were losing games to bad teams when he was healthy and needed a miracle shot to beat the worst Seton Hall team I've seen in many decades, went into OT with an 8-10 Notre Dame without their best player. This team was never good.

While there have been some unpredictable results of late, one still gets a sense of a few tiers developing....the title contenders, the very good, the up and down mediocres and the bad uglies

Title contender: Michigan State and Purdue....maybe Wisconsin. Not flashy, Michigan State epitomizes team ball. Unbeaten at 8-0, Izzo was given a fairly favorable first half Big 10 slate but its going to get much tougher now. Purdue had a blip at home over Ohio State but then put out one of the best displays in league play this year beating Michigan by 27. The Badgers have won 8 of their last 9 including 6 of 7 in league and just a 2 point loss at UCLA in that stretch. Get 4 of next 5 on the road so this is a huge test of whether they are a legit Big 10 title contender

The Very Good: Slipping Illinois back here because injuries and erratic performances have taken its toll and they are already 4 games behind Michigan State in the loss column. Perhaps they will be reconsidered depending on the results of an easier stretch which has them on the road for 3 of the next 4. Maryland has been excellent of late, very balanced on both sides and have won 5 of 6, just a 1 point OT loss at Northwestern and very managable stretch coming after tonights big home game with Wisconsin. Michigan hasnt looked great the past couple of weeks. Goldin sick last night barely gave them anything as they escaped a bad loss to Penn State. Still they are 7-2 in league but for some reason seem to be off. After a rough patch, UCLA has regained their confidence with 4 wins in a row and looks like a solid 6-9 type seed in the NCAA tourney. Oregon has been just okay in league play. They didnt look good in a loss at Minnesota. Solid NCAA team yes, title contender no and a rough stretch with 3 road games at UCLA and the 2 Michigan schools in the next 4. Ohio State may not actually be a very good but they have moved into the safe side of the NCAA for now and their recent play puts them a notch or three above the schools below them. Big win at Purdue followed up by a blowout win over Iowa and the Buckeyes seemed to found another gear. Still work to do with dangerous stretch of 3 of 4 on road that could bounce them on the wrong side of the bubble.

The mediocre: Northwestern is up and down and all around and thats why their resume falls short right now. Have had some spirited road efforts and did hold serve at home vs Maryland/Indiana but its going to take alot more. Absolute must win vs Rutgers for their resume. Their schedule the 2nd half isnt as tough as their first half so lets see how this plays out. Collins has worked wonders the last 2 years and they are capable. Indiana big disappointment with the amount they spent and what their fans expect. Theyve lost 4 of 5 and alot of them close as they cannot finish the deal. An upcoming 6 game brutal stretch will in fact decide Woodsons fate....at Purdue, at Wisky, Mich, at Mich St, UCLA, Purdue. Good luck. USC is playing everyone tough but just a bit young not good enough to make a NCAA run. I like this team every time I see them. Minnesota is officially mediocre after running off 3 straight Quad 1 wins. They have to come crashing down to earth right?

The bad uglies: Iowa does not have a Q1 yet and they were beaten pretty good by OSU last night. Any shot they have at a NCAA bid rests with beating Purdue and Wisky at home next week but right now its hard to say they are any better than any of the schools in this listing. Penn State is giving their all every night but have dropped 6 of 7 and dont really seeing that changing. Nebraska is in freefall with 6 straight losses and a must win at home vs Illinois to keep their season alive with a trip to Oregon looming. Rutgers having a nightmare season for a plethora of reasons and the hits seemingly keep coming. Washington was slammed with an insane first half Big 10 schedule as 8 of their first 9 are to NCAA likely teams with just 3 in their next 11 but it just seems they are pencilled in for last place.

Cannot quibble with the Order and your reasoning but sticking RU at 17 when they should be ahead of Nebraska , not only because we beat them at their place but we haven’t been blown out like they have in 3 of their 6 losses. You could also argue we should be ahead of Penn State who is 3-7 in league. Yes a lot of close losses and they have played tough but if Dylan doesn’t get hurt , we sweep them.

Number of teams within 2-3 games of one another. The schedule for everybody has a ridiculously hard stretch of at least 3 in a row so anything can happen . I do think teams that have played and have an upward trajectory are Wisconsin , Ohio State , Maryland and UCLA. I was not overly impressed with Michigan State. We neutralized their big men and if our guards didn’t have such shitty games allowing Richardson to go off we likely win even without Dylan. Acuff , JMike and Jeremiah were close to horrendous Saturday not to mention Martini and PJ’s 0 point beauty.

Michigan and Illinois are not as bad ass as most thought and are showing real flaws. Purdue runs threw Smith. Need a guard that can harass him all game and Purdue will just be mediocre. Maryland and Wisconsin have the guards to do it.

You have no idea what Rutgers would have done with a healthy Dylan. Yes Nebraska sucks right now. Michigan State played their D game vs Rutgers and only did enough to create seperation to win. Alot of schools have been dealing with flu and injuries. Lets see if Goldin is healthy on Saturday

Michigan State played their D game. What did Rutgers play their F game. We make a few more shots that were wide open we win that game. We competed with them on the glass even though -10, we neutralized their fast break , although they got 6-8 points off of it. You do those 2 things and hit some shots you beat them. We had 2 bad scoring droughts , one after we went up 11-4 and another when Pike went with Martini and JMike in the second half that allowed their lead to go from 4 to 10-12. Plus they had something to do with it but they caught ACE not having a great shooting day. Sorry , I do not see their great separation. They are deep and plays 10 without drop off which is their greatest strength but no one on their roster scares you.

the issue is we dont make a few open shots and havent all year long with players like Martini. Ace took trash shots, degree of difficulty shots arent always going to go in. It was a disappointing performance o on the big stage from him, not the first time. Derkack had 26 so thats what a healthy Dylan would put up. Rutgers was in the game in the first half, I will give you that..its because msu was poor...15 turnovers total and instead of just pounding the paint, they took 3s

the depth on MSU is tops in the league and they are well coached
