National Duals Qualifications announced

Sucks for Rutgers but they had to use some type of system in order to get teams in year 1. Next year will be different they will have a committee
Agreed but will always be odd that they’re implementing a dual tournament to get away from team placement at the individual tournament, and then use the individual tournament as the main criteria to get in. Stupid.

Illinois is in. We beat them.

Agree I don't like it but I grew up in IL and in HS the winners of the regional tournament advance to the team duals 🤷

High school is different though, typically if you have multiple state placers you’re going to have a good high school program. There’s not going to be as big of a disparity between dual and tournament teams in high school as there is in college.

Obviously a few exceptions. Like years ago Rumson had a few good guys, I believe when Shay Addison was there, but their depth was terrible. They would get waxed in most duals against good teams but had 3 or 4 guys that were legit state caliber wrestlers. Not a good dual team but a good tournament team. Rutgers is currently the inverse.

The remaining spots for the dual tournament will be drawn from a lottery. Rutgers does not have any lotto balls.

Teams that are in the lottery include:
Penn - 9 balls. Rutgers beat them 18-13
Maryland - 1 ball. Rutgers beat them 21-20
Indiana - 1 ball. Rutgers beat them 28-6

Teams that have secured a spot in the tournament include:
Illinois. Rutgers beat them 16-15
Ohio State. Rutgers lost 17-15.

Navy has 4 lotto balls. 7 of their 10 starters did not qualify for nationals.

Surely that’s a team that’ll contend in a dual meet.

When you are 11th in the country in duals you should be in the tourney. If they pick 7 Big Ten teams and you beat one head to head, you should be in. Just my opinion which most of you don’t share. That is what makes a debate
I share your opinion that we should be qualified for a duals meet tourney. It’s quite a joke that we aren’t.

What exactly is the value of being 11th in the country in duals?

As stupid as the metric used to qualify for this dual tournament is…

Illinois performed when it mattered the most, b10s and nationals, and we didn’t.

I mean they had a team of 6th/7th/8th year guys if they were ever gonna have a good tournament it was last season.. still it’s an awful metric , Illinois qualified 8 wrestlers for ncaa last year and half graduated ,both Brunagels, Ruth , luffman are gone , idk if pucino is back , this would be his 6th year , so basically after Byrd and Webster the entire team is gone

The states have had team tournaments for years. Name the states that determine entry into team dual tournament based on individual tournament. They don’t. It would be stupid. Because dual meets and individual tournaments are two different things. States get it. College wrestling?

The lack of respect for our dual meet capabilities sucks but as so many say “it’s all about 3 days in March”. These selections bear this out. Mindsets change slowly especially in wrestling meanwhile we get screwed.

The national perception is we suck.. other than one good year we usually stink it up at nationals. People pay attention to nationals.

Wrestling haphazardly throwing something together without much thought is typical and why it's failing. And to exclude a top dual team with a coach that's been at the forefront lobbying for a dual tourney champ is ridiculous. Grow the sport my ass...

Guys, we can complain all that we want. The reality is that the team does not produce at Big Tens or Nationals. I don't give a crap about beating Gardner-Webb, Kent State, Duke, F&M, LIU, Lock Haven, and Clarion. Why are we even wrestling these schools? Princeton, Penn, and Rider, I'm fine with. They are local rivals and have good wrestlers. I'm fine with wrestling Donnie/Sebastian/Buxton at Columbia. I'm fine wrestling Army and Navy. Where's Cornell? Where's Lehigh? Can we get Okie St. back? Kudos to Goodie for getting Va. Tech and NC State on the schedule. How about Northern Iowa, Iowa State, NDSU, SDSU, Missouri, ASU, and/or Oregon St. on the schedule?

It will definitely improve next year. They will have a committee selecting teams is what it's sounding like. And just because Goody was a big voice for years talking about national duals doesn't mean his team should automatically get in. Believe me he wouldn't want it that way.

Well they should make use of the dual meet rankings.

Find me a program that wrestles a significant amount of ranked out of conference opponents. Some teams will get a couple, as we did with VT and NC State. Unfortunately the current meta is to not wrestle a ton of matches, especially grueling ones, and save your energy for March. Goodale is against that, but a team has to accept the invitation to wrestle us.

We’ve had a problem with getting top opponents to the RAC as of late. Thats not our fault. Other teams don’t want to come here.

I think a tri-meet of Rutgers, Princeton and Rider would be great for the Jersey fans. Wrestle Lehigh every year. Rutgers should wrestle a top team from each conference Big 12, ACC and EWL every year.

Tri’s and quad’s are not fan friendly because they take like 6 hours start to finish. I think a creative solution would be something like a weekend tournament where Friday night Rutgers wrestles Rider and Princeton wrestle UPenn, with a 1st place and 3rd place dual on Sunday.

I also think the Big 10 should explore some kind of Big 10 vs NCAA type of showcase weekend in mid December. Imagine this lineup:

Friday Night:
Illinois vs Iowa St
Iowa vs N Iowa

Saturday Afternoon:
Michigan vs Stanford
Minnesota vs NC St

Saturday Night:
Nebraska vs V Tech
Penn State vs OK State

Sunday at 11AM, just before NFL kickoff:
Ohio St vs Cornell
Rutgers vs SD St

Obviously not all of these matchups work because teams have to accept an invite but these types of big time duals grow the sport. Televise one matchup per time slot on an ESPN/NBCSN channel and one matchup on BTN. Stream all matchups on BTN+ and ESPN+. Make the thing accessible.

No one said we should automatically get in. They ignored common sense and just threw it together without much thought. It's typical wrestling poor planning and dysfunction.

Rutgers didn't have a great NCAAs so they're not in year #1. The selection process will change and hopefully they get in down the road. With the portal and the way rosters change taking the dual meet rankings from last year would've flaws as well. They decided to use NCAAs for year 1 instead of rankings. They decided to go with actual results rather than rankings

You don't think Rutgers wants to wrestle Lehigh every year? Rutgers wrestled them every year forever and lost...50 in a row or something like that...Rutgers finally broke the streak and showed some life as a Program and now Lehigh wants no part of Wrestling RU
Not sure why it’s not happening, just saying it should be an annual match.. close proximity, no brainer.
