NBC Proposing Big Plans For Big Ten???

What happens to the Big 10 Network, which I believe is tied in with Fox?

Nothing, it's part of why I think expansion isn't done longer term. Besides leaving USC/UCLA as lone outposts, do you have enough inventory to satisfy Fox, BTN, FS1, CBS, NBC and Amazon without more teams? All this talk about NFL model, which I agree with, but you have to have the inventory to chop up between all these linear and streaming outlets.

Fans will get screwed if this happens and have to pay for P-Cock... this would suck for viewers who are trying to reduce multiple streaming services and costs...

If NBC does get a piece of the B10 package, it's suppose to be just one game. Fox noon, CBS afternoon, NBC primetime as part of a double header with ND. I wouldn't say no for sure but if it's just one game a week it doesn't seem like it would streamed exclusively on Peacock. It would just be a game on the main broadcast channel in primetime.

This would be interesting . No espn ?
Fox gets choice of best game ? .

I've always thought ESPN would get a piece and it's not a bad thing either. They're still a big megaphone in sports. An alternative of 3 broadcast networks is pretty nice too. Really though, who knows how it ends up until they release the deal. The more inventory though the more ways you can chop it up and the more media partners you can bring on board.

Fox is the main partner. They will likely get first choice some of the weeks, maybe half I don't know. No way to know for sure really. They will likely keep the Michigan/OSU game and the B10 champ game. After that who knows.

I have read the media companies can really be granular in how they set up choice and all the details. Certain number of times you get first pick, certain number of times a particular team, etc..and probably stuff that wouldn't even occur to any of us who aren't in the business.

I wouldn't say no or yes. Who knows for sure but I wouldn't rule it out.

I kind of wonder if not into the B10, maybe more B10 games on the schedule at least until they're free from the ACC. They're contracted for 5 against the ACC. Add Navy in there as well. USC/Stanford could be in the B10 in the future. That leaves 4 games, at least 3 of which could be rotated around B10 teams. It would make ND's schedule more attractive for NBC and sort of a backdoor way for the other media partners to get some ND away games against B10 teams on their networks.

"NBC Could Make Big Ten ‘The NFL Of College Football Conferences"

NBC
WOW:

That’s the latest word from the high-stakes Big Ten media rights negotiations. The conference is expected to command at least $1.25 billion annually for its next media rights deal from bidders that include NBC, Amazon, ESPN/ABC, and CBS Sports. The winner will air games alongside Fox Sports, the conference’s primary TV partner and an operating partner in the Big Ten Network.

Screw ND. You know they're going to want more than everyone else. No thanks!
Whatever makes the most money is the decision that will be made. It certainly doesn't matter what Rutgers thinks, as we are one of the least valuable and successful programs in the conference. That's not a shot at RU, just a fact.

I would be willing to bet that ND does join the B1G at some point soon. There is just too much cash to pass up. The era of regional rivalries and tradition is over in college football; the almighty dollar is now truly all that matters.

It sounds good. But I hate validating the NBC Notre Dame game as if that alone is as important as a B1G conf game.
There is the Connection to get ND to B1G... bring in NBC, make overtures to ND & NBC so they do not lose out on future TV revenue if ND goes to B1G and become exclusive to B1G network and Fox. Maybe we will be hearing a ND announcement sometimte soon ???

You know if the B10 does end up splitting up their inventory among the broadcast networks, I wonder if that doesn't increase the probability of going to 16. Playoff expansion is happening but if more (possibly all) of the broadcast networks are involved in CFB that could push up the demand for playoff packages too. 16 teams means more playoff games to sell. This wouldn't just be a good for the B10 thing but a good for all the conferences thing.

This would be more interesting if the N in NBC stood for NIL. Have the networks propose to pay the players directly, because the schools never will.

No idea how legitimate FOS is but their story is being linked on other more traditional outlets. Here’s another story from FOS.

Quick Question.

What does NBC do when Norte Dame is on the Road. I assume they pad for ~7-8 Home games. What do they broadcast on Away weeks... just random stuff?

From the end of the article:

Meanwhile, there’s growing frustration over the role of Fox Sports in the Big Ten media rights negotiations. Fox is the conference’s primary TV partner and part-owner of the Big Ten Network. Fox executives are directly involved in the negotiations.

Rival sports TV executives from the likes of NBC, ESPN, and CBS are uncomfortable submitting financial bids and sharing information in front of rival sports TV executives.

“So who do you think is going to get the best game matchups? Fox,” said one source. “Bottom line, Fox is watching out for Fox, not the Big Ten.”

The Big Ten’s current deal pays around $440 million each year.

Golf's Fall season?
Yeah, so are they bidding for only 7-8 Games? Or potentially 12 BIG games plus 4-5 more to fill the Norte dame slots when they are away...

if they want to do All day BIG10, you have to fill the Slots every Saturday!

There is a deal here to be made giving ND (and its media partner NBC) a special deal to get ND to join up. The ACC made a special deal with Notre Dame because they get a couple ND road games per year.. playing at ACC venues with the ACC owning the media rights to that.

But NBC would LOVE to air every ND game.. home or away or neutral. If the Big Ten can discover a formula for adding ND where NBC would pay a lot to get Big Ten games.. and thus, EVERY ND game as well as other Big Ten games.. it could be a win-win-win for Big Ten members, ND and NBC. And Big Ten season ticket holders would get some games vs Notre Dame every so-many years.

There is something to this... hope they explore it well.

NBC wants to pair the B1G with ND so that they generate more $$ and can more easily afford and justify paying ND $75M/year. If it's not the B1G, it will be someone else I bet.

With the way CFB is so skewed toward four or five teams, there are hardly any good games on TV anymore worth watching.
What teams are going to be competitive with OSU in the Big Ten? Hardly any?
What teams are going to be competitive with Alabama in the SEC? Hardly any?

We have to wait for Alabama vs. OSU for a good game. That is only one game that is worth watching.
And some networks are going to give Big Ten $1.25 Billion a year for boring games like Rutgers vs. Illinois where the final score will be 6 - 5 that is if they both bring their "A" offense.

Will be interesting to see if Warren caves to that and throws ND a bone without something in return. He seems sharp enough to not do that. In the meantime, unless ND jumps, news reports seem to indicate no more additions of Cal, Stanford, Oregon and Washington at this time and rather wait until next deal before evaluating those or any other schools not named Notre Dame. Question will be when that will be - 10 years from now, which would be just 2 years from when ACC GOR expires and the ACC schools start to look for new homes if SEC and Big Ten get even larger opportunities to negotiate before then.

If the OU/UT and UCLA/USC additions have taught us anything, it’s that the media won’t know anything until about 24 to 48 hours before the Vote occurs.

True. It's was amazing how the SEC and Big Ten were able to keep things quite as high profile as both of those jumps were.

There was an article in the Athletic about that recently and why things need to be locked down. Potential for outside (political) interference to foul things up if the stuff gets in the open.

There was a part too about how the A&M president got wind of the Maryland move before others. The Maryland president was at an AAU function with him and was asking advice about changing conferences.

It’s paywall but here’s the article anyhow for those that have subscription.

An excerpt from the article about mentor mentee relationship between Swofford and former Maryland AD Anderson. Their relationship is cordial now but not close the article said

From the article:

Their working relationship dated back nearly two decades to a sports management program at Stanford — John Swofford, mentor, and Kevin Anderson, mentee. There was history. Camaraderie. And strong mutual respect.

So when the ACC decided to expand in 2011, Swofford, the ACC commissioner, designated Anderson, Maryland’s athletic director, as one of his point people. The result was a stunning moment for college athletics: the addition of Syracuse and Pittsburgh to the league.

Anderson had completed his mission. But he soon turned to his own secret plan: engineering Maryland’s departure from the ACC, of which it was a charter member, to the Big Ten. It was a move that — by design — caught almost everyone by surprise, including Swofford.

A few months later, Swofford approached Anderson at a conference.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” Swofford asked.

Anderson looked at his former mentor matter-of-factly.

“John, I learned a lot of this from you,” he answered. “I saw what happened and how you did it.”

Maybe. My gut sense is that this helps ND stay independent by validating their spot in primetime and enabling NBC's commentators to try to roll B1G viewers into the ND game as part of their lineup. But I have no idea really.
