Bob Barchi just sent out an e-mail announcing the appointment of Phoebe Haddon as Chancellor of Rutgers-Camden. Haddon was a professor of law at Temple for over a quarter-century. She then became Dean of the University of Maryland's law school. While Dean, she secured a big foundation grant for her school. She had announced, even before the appointment, that she would not seek an additional term as Dean at Maryland.

Maybe someone has Barchi's e-mail; I accidentally deleted mine.

I don't know what to say about the appointment. I can tell you that the search committee did not bring candidates through, but instead apparently interviewed candidates at the airport.

She was a candidate for the Rutgers School of Law - Newark opening before they hired Farmer.

She was definitely a better option than Farmer. Unfortunately, that's not saying much, as Farmer gave a very lackluster interview. Unsurprisingly his term as Dean was also lackluster.

Interesting, kind of reinforces the "professional school" aspect of RU-Camden.

She was also a candidate for our deanship when we last looked in the late 1990s. But she's done a lot since then.

Farmer has been a leading force behind the law school merger, so I'm not sure you can say that his term was lackluster.

She will be the third straight chancellor/provost at Rutgers-Camden with a background in legal education. I can't imagine that the undergraduate college is happy about that.

It makes sense in a way. Certainly RU-Camden's most well known school is its law school. Still, I sometimes wonder if putting more emphasis (and money) in to its undergraduate programs would be better long term. I know Rowan is trying to make a push, but RU-Camden is about as close to a "big name" school there is in South Jersey.

You'll find below a Philadelphia Inquirer story about the new chancellor.

Tony, R-C has about four professional schools (law, business, nursing, public policy). But the bulk of the students and faculty are in the College of Arts and Sciences, which serves undergraduate students. A lot of energy goes into trying to improve the college in the hope that will lead to more applicants and a better student body, which would improve the college further. Beside, R-C wants to fulfill its research mission, like all Rutgers campuses.

New chancellor seems very personable. Think she will do a good job. RU Camden is competing to get alot of South Jersey students lately.
