There was one year back before the BCS when one of the big bowls had a de facto championship game, but each had one loss. If you took the losses, and found the teams they lost to, and the teams they lost to, and basically did a six degress of Kevin Bacon thing, BOTH teams in the big game should have been .... Furman. So just stop.
