Decided to jog through NB today because of the weather and just happened to come across these two.

Shaka is officially opening Monday, but they were having a test run today. It's a burritos place originally from down the shore, but beach themed as opposed to Hispanic. In the old Ginger and Olive spot, so nothing could possibly be worse than that. I like the decor, nice little setup. It's a casual sit down restaurant. Food was decent - liked some, not others. I think this could do ok.

Further down George St. you have Caffe Bene, which just happened to be opening today. It's in a weird spot - about halfway between the theatres and train station. They have coffee, but this place is much more desert-oriented. Big array of baked goods, smoothies, etc... and it's one of those high falutin places with things like Macarons and Gelato (both of which I think are awesome.) Really comfortable, relaxed setup for sitting down though. If this was on Easton for example, it would definitely be packed all the time with students. For people like Bob asking about a higher end bakery, this sort of fills that niche to an extent. I'm ok with Shaka, but really liked this.

In other news, the Hansel on Church is back to being open on weekends and is open later on weekdays now, which is a huge relief to me. Other things I noticed were that there's a Sushi place next to Mike's Courtside now that used to be Lebanese. The Indian place next to Garden Steaks is turning into another burrito place (the next Burger/Froyo/etc... battleground in NB?) The old Panini Place now has a sign about being "The Fresh Pantry" - they already have a website up and it seems to be some kind of meals ready to eat delivery service. The Counter next to World of Beer has their new sign up but still looks a ways off.

Shaka is pretty good. There is one at Pier Village in Long Branch.

Also the Hansel on Church has definitely been open past 2AM previously, I have gone there post closing time for food.

That changed in the fall. It stopped being open late and on weekends when the Easton one opened.

Very cool stuff! I'm always hesitant to judge a bakery until I've seen their kitchen, looked at their product and obv tasted it. I've been to tons of places nationwide that pass the sniff test, but when you delve deeper you find that very little is baked on site. A certain boss of cakes is BY FAR the biggest culprit of this

I've been to Shaka in pier village and always enjoyed it. It's never been a destination for me though. Regardless, I love seeing the diversity of places opening lately in NB.

I stopped by Shaka for a burrito yesterday. (takeout). The places is really nice inside, with a cool looking bar. I had a burrito and was disappointed, way to sweet, too much rice and kind of bland. It seamed like a east coast interpretation of what they think Hawaiian food is like. Would have rather had a "fake" burrito from Chipotle.

Diesel & Duke, a hamburger takeout shop, opener on easton ave. where Tido's Junkyard Dogs was located. The interior is remodeled nice key although you still cannot eat inside. The food however, is slightly better than you can cook at home on a grill and my hamburger bun could've come from Wonder Bread. For the amount you're spending ($9.50 for a cheeseburger and fries) your much better off going to burgerfi

What happened to Tido's? Always liked their hot dog fat sandwiches.
Ahhh! Tido's is gone? Sad to here. Everytime I ate their I fell asleep for hours on end afterwards, probably due to an over abundance of MSG in their food. Food was good though.

Strongly disagree. Diesel has much better burgers. Of course the Burger Fi dessert menu blows it out of the water, but plenty of that elsewhere on Easton.

Not related to any of the establishments already discussed, but figured this might be the best thread:

It is VERY cool to see that there will apparently be a Record Store returning to Easton Ave.

That's pretty sweet. This is the type of business that I always thought NB should have more of.

People are rediscovering records, and sales have really been on the rise over the past few years. So, it makes sense that more stores would pop up.

Yes, that's the kind of thing you would expect in a college town. When I started at Berkeley, ages ago, there were three or four major used book stores around the campus, selling all kinds of interesting stuff. I suspect the economics of running a used book store are not good these days, but still I'm surprised that NB doesn't have one.

Yes, you expect a college town to have the kinds of businesses that don't thrive in a typical suburban environment. Used book stores are a great example. NB has been strangely lacking here.

I see it's the old Captain Video spot. Nice.

LA Bagel is opening next to the Sprint store. There are a LOT of vacant storefronts on George St. right now and it's really unnerving.

A credit union is opening where a jewelry used to be, on the corner of Bayard and george, Rite aid is almost done with a total remodel 'The Counter' is soon to open sometime (eventually) and Moaz (next to Burgerfi) closed. The area is kep surprisingly clean, and there's a constant stream of pedestrians up and down George so I don't really think there's anything to be unnerved about. I find it more unnerving that easton ave looks abysmal (like 1995 is 4 mos. away), both the actual street and the buildings situated on it

Which stores on George have closed?

Where on Easton looks bad? A recent alum told me that Easton is perceived to be more dangerous, my guess is on that crime wave from a few months back.

Can we get pics/details from you local guys?

Easton Ave looks kind of the same. Is Pub still there? I'm sure on campus the most controversial thing about those pics is the Palestinian flag. The new building on Condict looks nice, but are they actually doing some with Theresa's?

They should work on the graffiti. Jersey City is very aggressive with that- it's painted over in days.

That brick building is bland, but is probably better than what was there before.

The fact of the matter with Easton is it's basically a student neighborhood with limited RU property. It's up to the city to keep it clean, and like they do with so much, they fail at that. As newer and better landlords come in it changes but clearly some are not held accountable. That's aside from the safety issue.

With the exception of Maoz, dare I say that most of those places won't be missed by the RU community? Maybe the Indian restaurant? Who is missing Extreme and the gold place- maybe we get retail that will engage the RU community instead of people that have mostly left that part of town.

Thanks for the pics, keep them coming good or bad. Many of our biggest contributors make JC look around the corner, and many of us are mostly around the stadium when visiting, so everything helps!

Burger Fi will not last long. I paid over $14 for a Bacon cheeseburger, fries and a coke the other day.

What a rip.

New Brunswick really needs to step up & clean up Easton Ave. It's looked dirty & run down for 20+ years.

On a side note, why didn't Theresa's ever rebuild & reopen after the fire?

Just got an email from The Frog and The Peach, they will be having a "Big 10 Brunch" Saturdays and Sundays of Big 10 home games. I know there was a lot of discussion on a thread (don't remember which one) about options for fans on game day weekends for brunch and some stated that Sunday brunch for big 10 fans is a big tradition and we don't have many options in New Brunswick. Sounds like The Frog was listening. Admittedly, this is a little more extravagant than what people likely had in mind but it's another good option. Website address below, I'm on mobile so I can't link it.
